One of the key ways our thoughts influence our emotions is through cognitive appraisal. This refers to the process of evaluating a situation and determining its potential impact on our well-being. Our thoughts and beliefs about a specific event can shape how we feel about it. For example, if we view a challenging task as an opportunity for growth and learning, we are more likely to feel motivated and optimistic. Conversely, if we interpret the same task as overwhelming and impossible to conquer, we are likely to experience stress and discouragement.
Another significant factor in the interplay between thoughts and emotions is cognitive distortions. These are irrational and inaccurate thought patterns that can significantly amplify negative emotions. Examples of cognitive distortions include all-or-nothing thinking, overgeneralization, and catastrophizing. When we engage in these distortions, our emotions can become heightened and exaggerated. For instance, if we constantly engage in catastrophic thinking, imagining the worst possible outcomes in every situation, we are likely to experience high levels of anxiety and fear.
Our thoughts also influence our emotions through self-talk. The way we talk to ourselves internally is a significant factor in shaping our emotional state. Positive and empowering self-talk can boost self-esteem and confidence, leading to more positive emotions. Conversely, negative self-talk filled with self-criticism and self-doubt can contribute to feelings of sadness and inadequacy. Recognizing the power of our internal dialogue can help us take control of our emotional well-being.

O so true. Our thoughts direct our emotions, words and actions. As a man thinks in his heart, so is he (Prov 23). Paul, familiar with suffering, reminds us to focus on things that are good, lovely, true… (Phil 4:8) Yet, blind blanket positivity is not helpful, especially not in challenging neurodiverse relationships. The Bible teaches us to be positive by seeking TRUTH (Joh 8) and cultivating the Fruit of God’s Spirit (Gal 5).

I do not believe this any longer. I believe negative emotions are what causes negative thoughts negative or positive emotions or result, negative or positive thoughts. Are used to believe that I just think negative, but I do not. I think in a pragmatic way nobody can think perfectly. Nobody truly has control over their thoughts. Lucky people that are in Better Better unlucky people that are naturally bad moves. Think negative thoughts
