How our changing DNA keeps us alive | Linda Chelico | TEDxUniversityofSaskatchewan

DNA carries the code for carrying out biological life, yet DNA is an unstable molecule. These two descriptions of DNA seem at odds with each other, especially when the prevailing view in media promotes that humans carry a stable genetic code throughout their lifetime. The reality is that DNA in all organisms is in a dynamic state with its environment, constantly becoming damaged and undergoing processes for damage reversal and repair. Sometimes, those processes are not exact, and sometimes to combat infection, DNA is purposefully altered. These processes result in mutations. Mutations readily appear in microorganisms as an adaptive advantage, enabling bacteria, viruses, or fungi to become resistant to pharmaceuticals or immune responses. These organisms have proteins that purposefully induce DNA mutations in times of stress. While humans share similar proteins, a surprising discovery over 20 years ago showed that humans have additional proteins in our cells that specialize in mutating DNA. The benefit of these specialized pro-mutagenic proteins is still being understood, as are the risks. While these proteins have multiple benefits in immunity, they also pose a risk that presents as cancer.
Dr. Linda Chelico (PhD) is a professor in the Department of Biochemistry, Microbiology, and Immunology. Her research spans biochemistry, virology, and cancer biology. She earned her PhD in 2004 from the University of Saskatchewan (USask), specializing in the study of DNA repair in fungi. It was then that Chelico became amazed at the potential of mutations in DNA for an organism’s adaptability. Chelico then completed postdoctoral training at the University of Southern California with Myron F. Goodman, who studies multiple mutation-inducing polymerases in bacteria. While she thought she would work on that topic, instead she worked on a new protein family that was discovered shortly before her arrival. Chelico brought this expertise to USask in 2009. The protein family her lab studies purposefully induces mutations as part of the immune response in humans. Chelico was the first to purify and characterize multiple proteins from this newly discovered family. If the truth came out, we wouldn't have enough healthy food to eat, and the price would skyrocket because of it. Imagine if everyone knew what to eat. 🤣 Organic vegetables would become scarce, plus the irreplaceable topsoil would be used up much faster.

@@Gigafactory if everyone switched to a plant based diet, we'd save over three quarters of current farm land. That would allow us to return the rest to nature. The reduction in emissions would be larger than anything else we can do. That's before we even start on what's happening in the oceans where there is currently, according to the MSC when questioned, no definition for sustainable fishing.

Human body always produce faulty cells during replacement of died cells with new cells. Human immunity can recognize the good and bad cells. If human immunity loss ability to kill the bad cells, the bad cells may grow and mutate to cancer cells. Those cancer cells are heterogeneous , they might be sensitive or resistance to human immunity. This might be the reason sometime cancer cells can be destroy or sometimes progress to metastasis.

I’m curious how Autophagy relates to this research. I’ve been informed that 21-days of water only fasting is equivalent to full stem cell replacement. I live with an autoimmune disease called ankylosis spondylitis, are patient at Mayo Clinic in Phoenix, and when I ask doctors how autophagy plays a role in my treatment, I get the same response; what is Autophagy? Seems a bit concerning that many in the medical field simply are not familiar with this concept. All one has to do is simply look up 2016 Nobel Peace Prize for medicine and this will lead to plethora of information. I am intrigued by science and human anatomy since I’ve had loved ones pass from diseases like scleroderma, along with my own body changing. Any input is much appreciated! I figured anyone watching this video either has similar interests or may know a lot more than what I have encountered thus far in my 54-years of walking planet earth. Thank you in advance.

Hello, and welcome to another great day on this Amazing Planet we are so lucky to call Home 😊. I have just written a short essay titled DIET,THE PERFECT DIET FOR HUMANS. There isn't one BUT,there is a perfect diet for each of us,due to our individuality. You will know when you have found your perfect diet when you can say, (assuming you haven't been dealt a lousy hand in the lottery of life), healthy ,fit, active, happy, content, overflowing with gratitude, empathy and compassion. NO health issues, medications or supplements (some diets need a B12 supplement and most diets would benifit from D3). Strong as an Ox with amazing endurance and with very sharp critical thinking skills that are necessary to cut through the, often,PERFIDIOUS, ASININE and NON SEQUITUR propaganda and marketing that we are fed by governments, media and corporations. I'm lucky I found my perfect diet 30 years ago when I was 49. Check out my 79th trip around the sun celebration,it's on KZread and only 2 minutes but you might get a laugh 😂. @davidslater9297
