How ONE Game RUINED The Reputation of Argentina's Greatest Striker!

Спорт

'Valdanito' is amongst Argentina's and Serie A's most prolific marksmen. A comfortable two-footed finisher with a dominant aerial presence, Crespo stood-out in the Italian topflight for over a decade, leading the lines for Parma, Lazio, the Milan clubs, and Genoa. Overshadowed and overlooked at times for La Albiceleste, his story deserves to be known...

I'm a Brazilian fan of São Paulo where Crespo was a coach. We hadn't won a title for 9 years, he arrived and in 3 months we won. In addition to being a great player, will definitely be a great coach. All São Paulo fans were very sad about his departure, I hope he comes back one day, he left a great impression due to his humility, intelligence, chivalry... Hernan Jorge Crespo will always be in our hearts. 🇾🇪🇧🇷

I saw a lot of these Argentinians train before the world cup in Holland and Belgium. They had a trainingcamp in Hoenderloo, i climbed over a fence with some friends and sat next to the field in the grass. I still remember trying to talk to them and they to us. We couldn't understand eachother, but they were very friendly to us. Always when i see Crespo, Veron Batistuta or Simeone it makes me think about this. We watched them for half an hour before the police took us away.

Crespo scored a goal each 141 minutes in the Premier League, which, as far as my math can help, means somewhere around 1.5 full matches for a goal. This is better than his Serie A similar statistic, where he only has a goal scored every 154 minutes. Flop in the Premier League? No sir! Coaches did not know how to use him, which is a shame. A player like him would have become one of the best PL strikers if he would've come after 2010 to the PL.

Crespo scored twice in CL final against Liverpool, twice against MU in semi final. He also has scored goals against team like Arsenal and Liverpool in EPL , scoring against the big teams in serie A during his time at Parma and Lazio. He also had a brace against Brazil in WC qualifier. He has 8 hat-tricks in serie A which is the most by Argentine players (Batistuta and Icardi has 6 hat-tricks). Its a big blunder by Bielsa not starting him in WC 2002 as he was serie A top scorer at the time.

Before 20 years or so almost every squad have had some “fantasista” on the pitch, unlike nowadays. Also, the classic 9’s are dying in modern football. Barca, Liverpool, City and so many other teams are playing for years without “big man in the box”. Then, the long range “bombers” are also almost vanished just like the role of libero. In 2003 it was Inter, who tried to board Crespo away from the club because of their financial Struggle. Vieri was set to stay, so Crespo should have gone away...To Chelsea. Simple. And he was substituted well with another Argentinian Julio Cruz. End of the Story.

Outstanding striker. Naturally gifted. At his best, he could literally score from anywhere. Very good in the air, could link up well, stretch defences, and really was a truly exceptional goalscorer. I think in hindsight, Hernan moved a few too many times. But the same could b said for Vieri as well. He wasn't exactly lucky with most of his moves, though I'm sure it helped money wise.

Crespo always flourished when he played in a front two, Chelsea never played like that so that's why he struggled in England, most top English teams played 4 5 1 in that era, that didnt suit a player like Crespo.

One of top 10 strikers in 2000s without a shadow of a doubt. For Chelsea or PL viewers to call him flop , they dont undrestand the game. If he had been given more game time and trust he would definitely could become the Chelsea best striker .

One of my favourite players ever. I loved him watching in the early 2000s while I was growing up. I lived in Argentina when I was a kid for about a year and during that time I became a huge fan of River Plate. My friend's dad showed me clips of Crespo and he instantly became the player I idolised. I still remember the 2006 World Cup and was so heartbroken when they lost against Germany. How I wish they won that day, they may very well have gone all the way if they had. Though, that still doesn't take away what a phenomenal player Crespo was, and to this day I maintain that he was one of the greatest strikers that Argentina ever produced.

Don’t think any Chelsea fan back in the mid 2000’s would consider him a flop just Jose preferred drogba. Has repeatedly said he wished he’d stay longer but him and his family never felt settled in England. Most fans all think highly of him and look back his time fondly. As the old chant goes “Hernan Crespo Hello Hello” 🎶

Kids nowadays will never understand the flair, goalscoring class and aerial prowess of Hernan Crespo. The fact he challenged and won his place in, arguably the most talent heavy teams of the mid 2000's (lookup Inter, Chelsea and AC Milan of that time), is a testament to the player he was (while winning major trophies in each of them). People think about him as a goal poacher, but he was way more than that. His aerial skills were second to none and that's not even considering how he lit the Seria A with Parma and Lazio. IMHO, that Argentinian Team with Crespo, Veron, Zanetti, Simeone, Riquelme and Batistuta had way more pizzazz than any Argentinian team with Messi in it.
