The only thing I’d add is regarding the hats/gloves. Some people (like me, who knit with nice wool), would never wash those items in the washer, unless it was on the delicate or wool cycle. And NO dryer!

TY for this, Melissa. You’ve confirmed what I do. I use one of the dissolvable laundry sheets called Clean People. I don’t use fabric softener at all. I fill the softener compartment with white vinegar. It softens fabric somewhat and eliminates odor.

I was always told/made to put new red or dark if you believe it may bleed to soak the new garment in salt water to colour fast it. It’s worked for me since I was young 63 now. Merry Christmas have a wonderful day filled with love laughter with your family. Stay safe

Yep, I saw your belly button! I always separate by color/temperature, turn the clothes inside out, zip up the zippers, and put more delicate items in lingerie bags. Socks and underwear are worn once, but everything else depends on the season. If the weather is warmer, then tops/shirts usually go in the laundry after one wearing. It is important not to wash anything red (or very dark colors) with light colors. I’m amazed how some garments continue to bleed after several washings. As far as wool sweaters, air them out and they’re good to go - wool is “self-cleaning.” I only wash if food or drink spills on them.

Saw the BB. I heard a 'laundry expert' on NPR say that sorting is unnecessary and to wash in the warmest water acceptable for the shortest cycle available. He also advocated for using the dryer as little as possible. My current machine does not allow such parsing with cycles, but I thought it was interesting.

Belly button! Lol My mom taught me well. I’ve never minded doing laundry and I even enjoy ironing. 🤷🏼‍♀️ But I always start my washer on hot while I load it, to pull the hot water thru the hoses, then switch to”warm”. I just can’t do the cold wash. I do leave the rinse on cold to help pull out any lingering detergent. If things really stink: like after gardening etc : baking soda: $1 for a big box.

Belly button...separate by work clothes (dressier items), casual items, towels, linens. Microfiber and kitchen towels washed separately but I have so many I do about 2 loads a month. Comforters are for show in my house. It gets folded at night. We use blankets as needed, also easier to wash. Got that from my mom.

Yep, saw your belly button! LOL! I separate by whites, mediums and darks. After watching this video, I will wash towels separately. 😳 With regards to temperature, I wash everything in hot water to avoid soap residue on the clothes, especially darks. Defeats the purpose of a high efficiency washer! And no, I don’t put too much detergent in. I researched causes of soap residue and learned that less is better.

The there’s towels, bedding, silk pillow cases and blankets. That’s already too many for me so unless I see that one load is large enough then I’ll split by lights vs darks.

Yes, I saw your belly button. 😀 My washing machine is far too small to put my duvet into, so I’ll have to have it cleaned at either a launderette or a dry cleaners. I don’t wear many dark colours. The only dark colours I wear are my navy trousers & I put them in with my bright colours, except white. I won’t buy clothes that can’t be tumble dried. In the UK a lot of people have a thing about putting their washing on the line. Not me, I use my tumble dryer all through the year & put it all way as soon as it’s finished.

If i'm worried about something bleeding i put it with the darks. I have a tri-sorter since we first got married i think lol i love it! Over the years i've come to sort by dry time aka weight because it wasn't worth having to put the dryer back on multiple times or different heat. Towels thick hoodies heavier weight uniform pants of my sons. Then I have thinner stuff like hand towels i'll put with the polos whos freaking collars take forever to dry.
