How Nujabes Influenced Lo-Fi Hip-Hop | Genius News

Музыка

Nujabes, the Japanese producer who passed away in 2010, was known for his use of samples and his jazzy production. He’s often called the Japanese J Dilla, and the two actually share a birthday of February 7, 1964. In this video, Genius interviews close Nujabes collaborators Substantial and Shing02 to find out what it was like to work with the reclusive producer. Genius News also spoke to Jonny Laxton from KZread channel College Music for information on how Nujabes influenced not only lo-fi, but anime’s connection to the subgenre through his work on Samurai Champloo.

When Asian and Black culture collide, they truly make beautiful music together! Just always make sure to respect the classics these modern artists and producers get inspiration from because I see countless people claiming “x person” is the only person who created a genre. They make these claims all while being ignorant to the history(which is often way older than they are), and all of the OGs who quietly laid the groundwork and made songs of that genre years before their favorite musicians did. Instead of trying to stick a flag on the originator, learn to love the genius behind each artists/producers rendition of music!

Of course the originators will always be respected by the artists. The only ones that pull bullshit claims are mere listeners/fans/audiences that don’t know any better. There’s always something beautiful when hip-hop that’s created beyond our own country. It’s the reason everyone loves the Beatles, who were influenced by American blues and rock. Us creators will always respect the roots of this game, as long as our different approaches are also respected and recognized.

It doesn't make you any less of a fan nor does it take away what their music means to you. If anything, the main message in any real art is always to stay true to yourself. Peace.

Some people just hate when things become mainstream. They like being a minority group that listens to an artist or genre. I get that when things become mainstream they attract those “hipster type” that jump on every new fad, but front like they’ve always been there. But music can be truly owned by everyone. Whether 10 people hear a song or 10 million, it always belonged to all of us

I first started listening to Nujabes tracks in high school after hearing them on Samurai Champloo. I've listened so many times taking the bus, on long trips and in the evening to help me sleep. It still creates exotic images in my head, a peaceful future I imagine for myself. RIP Nujabes and thank you.

I haven't even seen the video yet. But I remember even before lo-fi was labeled "lo-fi" I remember back in the days in the early KZread people called it NuJazz and jazz-hop. I hope this video does it justice. Because some of older people who were here before remember the days of KZread channels such as ie4tbe4tz808, bob42jh, S0ulCreative, Yoosin, a.reviewer, Spreadingdopemusic, Musicforyoursoul, Mrsuicidesheep (from 2011), Returntozero, Benevolent.vibe. etc. These channels dedicated they're whole channels to NuJazz/jazzhop and everything that circled Nujabes.. Sad, many of these channels stopped uploading. But I highly recommend anyone who loves Nujabes to check them out. Man the 2010s were the days. Peace ✌🏻 - @visualinspirations

I don’t know that there are many more artists that can do that to me from just a sonic level where I can’t even understand the words. Imaginary folklore for instance....talks about being in different moments and having the positive outlook to know you’ll feel better in awhile. I didn’t look up the English translation before going through a sea of emotion. To be played that way like an instrument...maybe for once I don’t have the real words for it.

I am happy that I found lofi. I found it while I was taking a quick rest from skating and browsing on youtube. Still remember that cool breeze filled evening 2 years ago.

I still remember so vividly the first time I heard Nujabes, it was a winter's night in Sydney in 2007, me and my friend were sitting in his car waiting to pick up some buds, my friend always had a much more refined taste in hip hop and when he played me luv(sic.) pt3 for the first time, it honestly changed the course of my musical interests forever. I loved shing02 on the track, but it was the beat that had me hooked. Needless to say, Nujabes has been on constant rotation ever since that winter nigh. Thank you Jun Seba.

I stumbled unto lofi at one of my lowest points. I was struggling with depression and had shut myself in. However, lofi led me to Samurai Shamploo, Cowboy Bebop, the music of those shows and eventually, Nujabes and J Dilla. I’m really thankful I found it all. Watching those shows and seeing the Sunflower gang and the Bebop crew seek meaning to life helped me through. Seeing all these people in the comments pay their respects fills me with warmth. There’s nothing but love here and I consider y’all friends. Let us keep the names of these legends alive, and hope that their art finds more people and fills them with luv(sic).

I just remember how much preparation it took-chores, showering, meal prep-getting everything outta the way so when "Battlecry" took us into an episode of Samurai Champloo back in 2004, I wouldn't be disturbed or distracted. And this was before I even cared about who was on the track or the actual plot of SC. The way the song made me feel was indescribable.

@michael lynch Why are you negative? People acknowledge Dilla too. People are just trying to show love to Nujabes. It doesn't have to be one or the other. You don't have to put someone else down to uplift someone else. like both. I respect both. Also, respect the dead. Your childish ass scouting every comment just to say stupid shit. Take your negative energy elsewhere.
