    similar in the incident itself but the run up to it means ocon wasn't at fault and in this the guy on the left is, purely bc he could see they were 3 wide and left no room since he was side by side for a good few seconds before making it 3 wide - whereas ocon had no idea perez was there

    10:08 I hate when the logic of "I was on the racing line." The green car is existing, fair, but the orange car drives into him, not the other way around. If you had to compromise the lap, the green car is at fault, but the orange car is at fault for causing contact

  • @leonardschungel2689

    Yes that was my thought aswell. If i was a steward for that incident i would want to make clear that the contact does not incur a bigger penalty for the green car since they didnt cause the contact. The green car should be penalised for the impeding only and not the contact. In my experience these sort of incidents are sometimes causes by drivers as a way to make sure the other driver gets a penalty. Had the orange car not caused the collision, it is likely that the impeding of the green car would go unnoticed and unpunished. But now it can happen that the green car also gets fault for the contact. That would not be right.

    Indeed, in my logic you only cross over the pit exit line if there's no traffic. If you hit traffic, oh well bad timing make up for it in the race. The car on the hotlap had relative to anticipate he was gaining on some cars and could clearly see that there was a queue of cars obediently getting into lap pace as they should

    Blue flag means you can't contest the guy passing you, it doesn't mean you have to jump through hoops to let some guy pass. He also pretty much ran into them while they were minding their own business. This is primarily bad track design at work here and the correct remedy would've been not letting these drivers leave the pitlane when a hotlap is on its way. But generally, driving into other cars just doesn't end well.

  • @JReaLBiz86

    Initially I felt like the Audi was at fault in that incident. I mean, he sees the guys coming out of pit lane, he knows his corner entry is compromised... it happens sometimes on hotlaps... you have to give up some time to finish the lap. Unfortunate, but part of racing. I agree that this is mostly an issue with track design. The rule is, exiting the pits you can't cross over the white line, but if you're on a lap, that part of the asphalt is racing surface. As the green car I would have been backing off anyway, since I'm so close to the last car that exited, and I know I'm prepping for my hotlap. I'm not gonna stop on the circuit (that's just as dangerous), but I'd definitely be cruising out of pit lane and leaving as much space for faster traffic as possible. But then, what else could they do? Leaving the pits, trying to find some space on the track, glued to the outside line, with a qualifier closing in. I think the Audi is at fault for misjudging his swing into the next corner and taking a bit too much track a bit too soon.

    13:43 The second Lesmo is almost in every case a single file corner as well. So I think the guy on the outside has to back out there in this exact scenario. I like in sim racing how people try to leave space for one another to go side by side, but sometimes it's just not a good idea and you can lose so much time to drivers behind by being too courteous to the other driver. Imo, of course.

  • @Delimon007

    It's not a single file corner and it never has been. I know of no passing zones, that is not one of them especially not as the outside car where you are likely to get a better run down the straight.

  • @seanmccormack6103

    @seanmccormack6103

    8 ай бұрын

    @@Delimon007 never said its a no passing zone. through lesmo 2 you try to carry a lot of speed. going through side by side is a sure way to lose speed. apex to curb exit is the only good way to go through that corner. What i also mean by my comment above, is it a one line corner. You can't really vary the line through there and maintain the same amount of speed as the "correct" way. you can absolutely pass into the corner or dive in there if someone is slow, but to try to hang around the outside as a car being overtaken, you are asking to be put into the gravel. If the corner was wider, maybe then you realistically could try side by side without losing too much time.

    It’s so interesting to hear your thoughts on the road racing incidents and etiquette. Coming from a mostly oval background and knowledge set it’s all up for grabs and it does bite me sometimes in road racing as it’s not a given to give up a corner due to positioning. That being said I understand and agree with some of it as it just hurts both more to keep racing but the mindset of oval driver racing road is different and causes chaos from time to time.

    2:49 Very similar thing happened just this past weekend in Qatar at the F1 Sprint race. Ocon being on the left, Hulkenburg in the Middle, and Perez on the right. Ocon should've known there was a car next to him put pinched anyways thinking Hulk would move out the way but can't because Perez was on his right, causing the sandwich, and Hulkenburg coming out more or less unscathed. Very crazy we have a real life example mimic one in sim-racing. And people say sim racing isn't realistic.

    The gap is on the left hand side. There was enough room to get by with two wheels still on the track(not over the white line) until the merc moved back over to put his left wheels on the white line. They both wanted the inside line into the next corner and I assume that's why they're so far off the racing line. I dont see a problem with the merc moving though, it wasnt in the braking zone and he only made on defensive move.

  • @jay18394

    @jay18394

    when you are racing, its not always best to go where there is "tons of space". If you are on the outside in casual games like F1, there's a high probability that the car on the inside will understeer and push you wide. Thats why Jimmy said that people will go for tiny gaps on the inside if they can squeeze their car in. You are a charity case if you just go where there is more room when racing all the time. If they leave a small gap and there is a good chance that you can make it stick in that small gap without incident, you take that small gap 10/10 times.

  • @vesper1538

    @@umungus518I agree. I don't quite understand why jimmy put the merc at fault, because it looks like the movement is simply just him setting up for the "corner". Looking at his line it looks like he goes a little wide, then starts to slowly move back over to the inside. I don't think it was a reaction, I would say the contact is just a racing incident. Maybe a bit of a helmet, should've been looking in his mirror but it happens.

  • @Excludos

    @Excludos

    8 ай бұрын

    Where the racing line is matters zilch. There is physically space for a car on the inside, hence there is "a gap" there for one car. I disagree with Jimmy in thinking the Mercedes moved over intentionally tho, I think he looked ahead and aimed the the bollard way ahead of him, which is why he continues to move over until he almost rubs the fence even after the incident. Still, it matters none. He moved right, left space for a car, and then moved back again. And you can't do that on a straight when there are cars around you (even if that straight is slightly bendy. You have to follow the curve of the road, which he didn't). He is by all rules the one to blame.

    For 8:50 I can't agree with you there Jimmer. The track limits is the first white line regardless of the amount of tarmac there is outside. There was never a car's width gap there so the Red Bull left the track and gained an advantage. It is also then on them to re-join the track safely which is to go round the back of the Merc. Also I'd say the movement of less than half a car's width isn't a defensive move due to the ability to hold the wheel round a curved straight.

  • @umungus518

    @umungus518

    1, his wheels never went beyond the white lines so he didn't leave the track 2, he didn't overtake off the track, no advantage gained 3, before the merc moved over there was enough room to get by with two right wheels still on the track 4, I dont see anything wrong with the merc moving over to squeeze him since it wasn't in a braking zone and he only made one move.

    That oval thing at Iowa, having driven it recently in the new 87s car, it's just a rather difficult track with multiple grooves, and it's very easy to just go a bit too deep. I'd say the 19 just overcooked it/momentarily lost focus, went too deep and shagged himself and sadly, somebody else. Just one of those (Imma guess here) lower split things. People aren't fully up to speed and aren't super confident and consistent, and more often miss the braking point etc. Just happens, meh but, certainly not protest worthy in the slightest

    Love the explanations where though you may be right and have the right to the corner, it doesn't mean you won't be involved in an incident. It's like my wife's opinion when driving "Well, if they crash into me it will be their fault" vs mine which is "Just don't get in an incident and it's no one's fault and you get to where you're going vs talking to angry people". A little bit of self preservation in racing goes a long way. Not saying be unconfident, but more so I just try to think about a strategy to retake the position on the next couple corners instead of getting frustrated that I am getting passed.

    That Porsche & Mclaren coming together is the exact same thing that happend to me in Gran Turismo on Sunday evening on Nurburgrin Sprint coming up to turn 6. I saw the car behind me was faster and i didn't want to contest because i was saving my tyres. They went past on the right, then barely in front move across the nose of my car and hits the brakes right before the marker the brake marker i was using, we connect and both go off into the grass. After that come next next lap at T1 they very deliberately take me out. But they did get pass.... and picked up a 3 second penalty... which when they then had to serve... and i then passed them. So in other words i think it went pretty well 🙃

    Personally I think the incident at 10:15 has all 3 cars at fault. I do believe that yes the two exiting the pits should have been more wary and slowed to let the hotlap car past and I get that the hotlapper needed to get to the right side of the track for the ideal line but that doesn’t mean you should just come across like the other car isn’t there anymore, just because you can doesn’t mean you should. I’d say the orange car is 30% to blame

    incident at 9:30 is not the merc his fault. The wall isn't the track limit, the blue line is so there was never a cars width and its the Red Bulls fault.

    4:13 is racing incident to me. Green car is staying mostly consistent on the inside. Not going to much over the curb to stay stable. Not unreasonable in a 3 wide scenario. Black one is sandwiched and can’t do anything. Black and white car can’t see green one I think and believes the black one will turn right as well so they have enough room. Black and white could be aware a little more of green possibly being there as it disappeared in his mirrors but I’d argue it’s a racing incident.

    4:32 This is one of those "I was holding my line" moments - The 19 is driving relative to the lanes on the track, while the other cars are arcing through the corner to maximise their momentum while minimising tyre-wear. I see it quite a lot on corner entries where there are two cars side-by-side at the top of the track, with the uppermost car slightly in the lead, and the uppermost car wants to turn in to run the normal outside-inside-outside line (and doing it in such a way that it would still leave space for the inside car), but the inside car delays their turn in to hold the outside car on that topmost line, wrecks them both, and then says "but I was simply holding my line". My problem with that is that it puts responsibility on the car in front to drive to a line that they can't see the other driver taking unless they are looking in their mirror, and not at the track ahead where there is a wall they need to avoid hitting. It's one of those "you're technically correct, but your race is also over" strategies employed by the sort of petty, small-minded driver who wrecks people because they're being overtaken. I'm still looking for a definitive answer on this. I've stated each time that I need to see some sort of official ruling from an IRL source, but all I seem to get are opinions.

    NASCAR/Oval racing doesn't make officiating calls over things like that, so there is no "official call". One thing to keep in mind is that irl spotter give way more info of course. So they can tell their driver about someone driving it in too deep and to wash up a little. Helps a lot in a lot of the situations you talked about. In that clip right there Jimmer was spot on. 19 is at fault but not intentional. Just sent it in a bit too hard. As a lifelong oval fan I will say that if in the "inside car delays their turn in to hold the outside car on that topmost line" situation happens, odds are the court of public opinion will blame the guy for not turning for the corner. Yeah you're racing someone but they also have to make the corner. It is a respect thing. Break that respect and you won't get any in return. I know this wasn't a definitive answer, because there isn't. Just a mostly correct one that a few people feel differently about. Thats oval racing for ya.

    Agree with all except the Silverstone one. The guys exiting the pits can't disappear, and both of them slamming on the brakes isn't what the flying lap car would expect

    He means slowing down before exiting the pits for both of the cars. The first car should 100% slow down before exiting, the car up ahead should either slow down before the pit exit or after that initial corner or stay very wide letting the car by.

    Yeah specifically in a non-professional setting just keeping to your line and acting predictably is always the recommended option. Sucks that it works out like that on that track but what can you do. Certainly it would be courteous of the green car to slow down to let the orange car pass. That is what I would do.

    good to note is that especially in a race the ones exiting the pit are also entitled to room. IMO eventho the one exiting the pit was to blame, the crash happened because Audi came to the racingline anyway. The lap was compromised allready of theiretoo late or nonexistential recognition of the cars on flying laps

    I disagree with you with on the F1 clip at 9:33 . I feel like the Merc is on the left side, and the slight movement to the right is because they were coming out of a slight curve, so they were just lining up with the white line after finishing the bend after that chicane. There’s about 30 miles of track to the right, so to me it looks like the Merc is pretty clearly defending the inside, but the RB goes for the inside anyway, and then runs wide on the inside line at the next corner. Thoughts?

    i agree on every incident except the final formula vee. yes white locked up got a bit wide but he started the corner mid track and was close to mid track when blue made contact. blue started far left and ended up crossing lanes to contact white . then white rams in anger which is protestable.. you want to get all the way left to open up final apex in oak tree . so no real reason for blue not to just wrap around the outside wide then cross under for a better exit and pass on that massive straight coming up. they were both going to need to share the left side of the track to make the next exit side by side
