How (not) to make an HHO Torch [Explosive Failures]

Ғылым және технология

If you want to build the same HHO Generator as I did you can follow the Instructions in this Video:
• HHO Generator - Water ...
Other then that I show my first attempts of making a torch out of an HHO generator, that I build a while ago. After some explosive failures I actually get it to work. The goal for future Videos is to make the flame big enough so I can actually use it to do some serious glas work. If you have any suggestions on how to improve this make sure to let me know!

Nice to see someone that doesn't mind to show us its failures 👍. Keep up your experiments. Thanks 👍

This happened to me when I made my own HHO generator. Unfortunately for me the blow off lid I created failed to blow off and a bunch of grass shrapnel shot at me and cut my wrist. Still have a scar to this day. I’ve done scarier chemistry but HHO generators still scare me lol.

I personally use medicine bottles they blow every time. I say every time because ive yet to have success. I pur the medicine bottle inside of a. Heavy glass mug to contain the projectile. I have enough of them so its easy for me.

Reduce your pressure, youre producing alot of gas and no regulation on pressure and minimal on flow , the fact you're still getting a flashback after inserting the wool, you have leaks and too much pressure, another option, reduce current on the welder , there will ve a trimpot for calibration that will allow you to go down further

The wool did work for the flashback. But I doubt I will pursue this much further. It was just a fun little side project :D

when you lit the oxyhydrogen, I winced so hard, I was like: "oh no, oh no! its not pure hydrogen, its oxygen and hydrogen in the stoichiometric ratio, its gonna explode!" good thing it wasn't sealed, and there was a bubbler xD also, why use potassium hydroxide over sodium hydroxide? or any other metal hydroxide? does it give some sort of advantage? and is calling it a catalyst correct? or is it just a source of conductive ions which provide an electrolyte? isn't a catalyst something that changes the speed of a reaction, but does not get consumed? though the potassium hydroxide doesn't go away, it _is_ technically getting broken down, and then immediately getting reconstructed by reacting with water. I'm loving your videos, and I would love to make suggestions, (if that's alright with you xD ) when it comes to oxyhydrogen torches, they produce the stoichiometric ratio of gas, which is quite dangerous, and burns a little too fast, and since water only requires 1 oxygen atom per 2 hydrogen atoms, this means that when hydrogen burns in air, it much more rapidly will find the stoichiometric ratio with the oxygen in the air, and it can also mean too much oxygen. if you want to slow your flame down, try letting a small portion of your oxygen gas escape into the air. (if the configuration is right, you can do this) then it will have slightly too much hydrogen in the ratio, and so it will burn more slowly, especially in the tube, but when it escapes (which is where you want the flame) then it contacts the air which gives it the last bit of oxygen it needs to burn stoichiometrically. the snail shell (contains calcium carbonate) is essentially a lime light, and glows super bright (you probably already knew that!) I just find it interesting.

It was such a small amount of oxyhydrogen, that it was totally fine. I just used potassium hydroxide, because that is what Grant Thompson used in his video. I guess NaOH would work, but there might be a disadvantage, that I am not aware of right now. If it is a catalyst or not depends on your definition of catalyst of course. But if a catalyst doesn't react in some way during the process I guess it would be inactive. So I am pretty confindent that it is correct to call it catalyst right here. Yes I always love suggestions! However this one is too complicated to pull of for me to pull of in real live. Maybe something for advanced tinkering :D That with the lime light is a great point! I have hear about this bevore, but I was not explicitly aware, that I demonstrated this, in this old video. ;-)

@@EliasExperiments honestly, I overcomplicated the HHO torch idea, the whole idea was simply to let some of the oxygen escape from the HHO generator, so that the flame didn't explode or get extinguished as much. :)

Well doing that is quite difficult, because I would have to built an entirely different generator. It took me long enough to build this one. ;-) But it still sounds interesting!

You have a lot of faith in that DIY "flashback arrestor" attached to a pipe bmb, which obviously wasn't designed with supersonic energetic mechanics in mind... this is a highly explosive mixture which releases a fair amount of energy, and honestly watching this video you're lucky to be able to walk away from this fully abled. At the very least, put some space between the sealed PVC pipe HHO generator, your face, and the torch end... if someone were to repeat this as is there could very easily be an obituary in the news... yikes.

Thank you for the feedback. In my estimation however you are far overstating the dangers of such small amounts of HHO. At most it would have been able to crack the glass, but there would never been enough energy to send shards flying at dangerous velocities. I have had this explode several times and it was never really energetic.
