It's more that it's not strong game design. Crash 1 - 3 were all ps1 and wrath was the first multi platform so people were going to be introduced to crash for the first time and the game pretty much bombards you with stuff in the first level instead of introducing them appropriately like prior games would have. The majority are going to figure it out eventually, but trickling mechanics to players especially when new is just better design. And iirc the metal coated crates were introduced in the first level without showing you how to belly slam which is something the uninitiated won't know how to perform. Even crash 4 which is extremely recent did a much better job showcasing and drip feeding it's mechanics in a well placed manner.

@@walter4180 Agreed that when compared to 1-3, WoC doesn't have as strong game design. I wouldn't say it's BAD game design though (in terms of the boxes). I was pretty bad at games as a kid yet this was one of the first games I've completed, also did the "secret" levels. I feel like if the explanation of different boxes were bad, my 4 year old self wouldn't have been able to play the game, yet I figured out what they did quickly. A few things. It is the 4th mainline game in the series, so I kinda expect the levels to introduce all the old crates. Even so, its easy enough to learn what makes each crate tick without getting overwhelmed. Besides the ice physics, this is a good first level, and I enjoy it to this day. Is it as memorable as other games? Not really, but I like it enough. Better than Twinsanity and its unskippable cutscenes that repeat if you die
@brianhull2407
Жыл бұрын
That argument only applies to people who had a PS1 or bought the PS2 and so could’ve played the first three games. WoC was the first Crash game to be multiplatform, so it was also available on the GameCube and (I think) the OG XBox, meaning more people with no familiarity with the first three games would be playing it. I agree that, aside from the ice physics, for people with some familiarity with either Crash 2 or Crash 3, it was a decent enough first level. I personally had no trouble because I only played it at a friend’s house after playing through part of their copies of Crash 2 and 3 (never played the original Crash 1, actually…), and I was unaware there even was a GameCube version at the time, but had I been aware of the GameCube version before I met that friend (not an implausible scenario), it’s likely I would have been overwhelmed because I wouldn’t have had that prior experience. Plus, I mean, it was at a friend’s house, so he would warn me about certain obstacles ahead of time, anyway. I’m honestly torn on WoC. On the one hand, it does get more hate than it deserves, but on the other hand, it did get a lot of things wrong. This is one it did get wrong, but not necessarily terribly so (there are far more egregious issues with the game), and had it been only on PS2, it would barely be an issue. And yeah, why does it start with an ice level, complete with ice physics? Outside of some games where basically every level is an ice level, it’s Christmas themed, the main character is a penguin or something, or the game is based off of a movie or something that starts off somewhere cold and snowy, I’ve never seen any other game that begins with an ice level (unless you count CoD Infinite Warfare or Dead Space 3, but I personally don’t). Even in those exceptions, it’s rare for there to be ice physics in the first level. There’s a reason for that.
@brianhull2407
Жыл бұрын
Also, yeah, aside from being rushed and the lame name for the BBEG (the Evil Twins, seriously?), Twinsanity’s biggest flaw is the unskippable cutscenes. I love the game, but that is a major flaw, especially since they also replay when you die (which would have been a simple fix, btw) or if you end up replaying a level again (also an easy fix, even disregarding the fact that it shouldn’t be so easy to replay a level like that in the first place; I can give a semi-pass for that because it’s kinda open-world, especially for a Crash game, and the first one in the series to allow such exploration). And when I say “easy fix”, I do mean easy. Just a single flag for each cutscene or a counter that increments for each cutscene that gets preserved after death and when saving then reloading that save would fix that problem even without making the cutscenes skippable. Sure, making the cutscenes unskippable would be a better fix, but still…

People saying they don't see the problem probably also don't understand basic level design principles. When introducing a mechanic, whether it be for returning fans or new ones, you always need to be sure a concept is clear and cohesive before proceeding to more challenging variations. You can't just say "Well it's the 4th game people should know" because this could be someone's first. Crash 4 is the EIGHTH game in the series and even gets this concept right. When designing a game, you always have to assume the player doesn't know before introducing something for the first time in that game.

Also figured out I had to slam the metal crates pretty quickly, but there definitely could have been a tutorial made to tell you that you even COULD do a slam

@@soulciel can you quote where he said that among us and Pokemon go were the only games the industry has created since crash? Also the popularity and age of those games literally has nothing to do with Joel’s comment. His point is that video games have become less challenging over time to accommodate for people who complain about ‘poor level design’ when what they actually mean is ‘this level is hard’. Pretty much a skill issue. But in your case it seems more like an intelligence / illiteracy issue.
Is it? In TWOC first level they arent all on the same área, in fact il argue is the best at showing you all of that cus they are all separate filled with checkpoints to mess around with them. You could say the same for Crash 2 and 3 since they also shove elements you wouldnt know about if you are a first timer

@brianhull2407

This never bothered me. I mean I get the point but theres not really any new mechanics compared To 3. Also I think there is an idea here where you have a small Intro for these things and later on you have levels that are based on some of these things.
