How can living a long, vibrant, and healthy life - one avoiding doctors, hospitals, and pharmaceuticals as much as possible - be obsessive? This is about eating whole plant-based foods, which is what nature provided us with for possibly MILLIONS of years before we started eating animals and certainly MILLIONS of years before we started eating crap. A word of caution, I personally eat loads of starchy foods, so really don't find McDougall's stuff much off the mark but do include things like protein from plant source and exercise. Assuming you mean McDougal not McGregor as there is no such plant doc....this is doctor Greger. But there is this from forks over knives site in reference to McDougall's retirement in 2018... "But after a year of personal hardships-Mary underwent shoulder surgery, he broke his leg, they lost their home in the 2017 Santa Rosa fires-McDougall decided it was time to pass the torch."" I heard but was unable to provide from other source, just could not find it today, the broken leg was in reference to a fall in the bathroom. He is old but not real old, so a broken leg from a fall in the bath, osteoporosis which typically runs concurrent with sarcopenia. They are rarely if ever found apart, excepting patients in hospitals in bed rest conditions. I per example fell from a 24 foot ladder working on a second story roof last october at roughly his age..suffered no broken anything, hit my side hit my hip my face even my ankle with a severe sprain but no broken bones. Why no sarcopenia is why. Which is very important, All people fall at times a break or not is likely sarcopenia or not.

I had to be on bed rest for 2 weeks and was shocked at the muscle loss I experienced. BUT...all his emphasis on protein to extend life as well as the need to do intense training to boost VO2 max...while I was reading all I could think was "Hmmm, well that is not what the Okinawans are doing..." It would be really good to hear your take on his book.

He does have a lot of good things to say, so his book is challenging to review. But he is not a longevity researcher and just completely blows longevity researchers off on several topics. I just don't understand why. I don't think it's profit motive. Dr. Greger isn't a longevity researcher either, but he listens very carefully to them and is willing to change his position as he understands more.

Attia has struck me as a really curious and interestingly problematic public figure in the "health space". Like you stated, he has a lot of good things to say. But he's seems to have adopted almost a, "throw my hands up" stance regarding nutritional science. Apart from a strong view on protein requirements and some basic ideas which everyone seems to share (eat unprocessed food, not too much, etc.), he seems to look upon much of the nutritional research and evidence as still being far too unsettled to trust yet. So he concentrates the vast majority of his own personal efforts and outward communications regarding the physical activity aspects of health, with lesser nods to getting enough sleep and reducing stress. But exercise is what he views as being the most important factor. Or at least, the most evidence-based. I have an armchair pop-psych theory about why he might discount much of the nutritional evidence, but I'll keep that to myself as it can only be a speculation at this point. @@PlantChompers

@@HidingFromFate One thing to understand about Attia is that he is OCD when it comes to exercise. He has become negative about water fasts for the simple reason that he refuses to do only light moderate exercise like walking instead of his usual full workouts during fasts even though the studies show that moderate mild exercise is optimal for muscle tissue retention.

Studies have shown restricting protein, particularly protein high in methionine, mostly animal based, is better for longevity. The evidence is the evidence. Now if you're eating reasonable amounts of plant protein, you will be fine.

Nah Attia and Greger do not seem a good match for this debate. Greger has made up his mind and Attia is one of the most stubborn people in the business. What you would need for Attia is someone who actually knows his stuf and does the actual research and publications. Valter Longo would shred Attia into a million pieces and Sinclair will not have much sympathy for the unscientific claims either (he didn't have mercy on Huberman on that front). So maybe Attia and Christopher Garder,.. that would be a nice debate. Or maybe Attia and Liza Mosconi? Those both can really put Attia on the thinking chair because they are extreme hardhitters with high publications on regular basis.

That is one of THE most serieus discussions that was to be had in the field. But no most plant based proponents don't waste time discussing very small influence hype type of fad diet proponents. Because they solve themselves in a matter of months or years. Just not worth the effort.

Thank you Chris and Toni for this great interview of Dr. Greger from two equally interesting points of view. Chris, you seem to enjoy expanding your reading list, so in order to avoid that unfortunate and stressful recording incident in the future, you might want to read Atul Gawande's "The Checklist Manifesto" (and if you haven't yet, then you definitely want to also read "Being Mortal"). Thank you again, the work you do with Plant Chompers is infinitely valuable! And never stop with the science part, it helps a lot with using your work in class with students so that they can be taught to reason like scientists and learn to process evidence and claims themselves rather than just be presented with competing claims when they come in class with questions about toxic content like What I've Learned videos on meat.

Yeah, the thing about chicken is that the breeds that are grown for meat all have the chicken version of the Prader-Willi syndrome : they cant stop eating if there is food available. Then once these chooks are dead and processed they are injected with brine AND SOY PROTEIN. The soy is to get the total protein back up as the fat content is so high (and it means it weighs more and you can make more $$). I used to work in a chicken factory for 3 years. I dont eat chicken more than once every 18 months or so these days🤦

Those kind of shoes where invented in the middle ages because they look cool. They destroy the natural way of walking and standing. The wrong offset causes your knee to be in a wrong default state, causing problems upper up the chain.Absurd how many civilization problems are caused by this. I personally wear 5 fingers only if possible. * slow juicer green smoothy is perfect extract. You can do it all 2-3 days in a batch. the fiber product I use to cook . Feels just right in the morning. * Lots of fermented foods like kimchi, sauerkraut, kafir, .... Together with zwieback you can restart in 1 day your digestif tract * Lots of stretching. It has been shown it reduces cancer risks an prevents mobility loss. I do it like 10 minutes a day * Vibration plate. 5- 25 hz - nothing like it * zone 2 & zone 4+ training
