Unfortunately, innovation actually also contributed to Nokia's downfall. It isn't mentioned in the video, but one of the big mistakes Nokia made was not adopting Android. They were focusing on their own operating system; two of them in fact, being developed in tandem. They sunk almost $5 billion in R&D into their own OS and it never took off. By the time they switched to leveraging Android, Samsung and HTC had filled the gap.

@@iriemonmon actually, it did. Windows phone 8 was Dead on Arrival. Android already taking off in cheap phone market, and not a single phone maker choosing windows phone in major market such as US, Europe, China, and India. The majority of reason why Nokia choosing WP instead of Android is the CEO of Nokia at that time were ex-Microsoft and still had major stakes in Microsoft, while also good friend of Steve Ballmer (CEO of Microsoft at that time).

The video glossed over many important details that contributed to the downfall like bad company culture and structure, which resulted in several factions and teams inside the company competing against each other instead of working together. There was no singular vision

As someone who once upon a time worked at Bell Labs I'd be very interested in seeing more on the last 10 years or so of Nokia. Lucent "Merged" with Alcatel to create Alcatel-Lucent and then with Nokia to create .... Nokia, they must have done something right.

Nokia could be very successful today if it gone with android os but the wrong dicision of Stephen Elop, going with Microsoft made them fail badly..

Nokia smartphones are being produced under 'HMD Global' which runs clean version of android with direct updates from Google. I own the Nokia 8.1, which was released last year. Great phone!

Nokia is the Kodak of mobile phones. Kodak didn't move up well towards digital cameras and nokia felt down when android phones started booming. I miss them so much i remember the battery could go 6-7 days without charging.

I thought they were going to mention when they got bought out by Microsoft and the Nokia windows phones became a thing. That was also a failure by most standards.

They didn't get bought out by Microsoft! Where are you guys getting this from? Microsoft bought Nokia's Windows Devices division so they could produce Windows Phone in-house. Nokia is still free standing and making Android phones

@@iriemonmon actually, Microsoft Buys the entirety of Mobile Division of Nokia, then also buys the rights to Nokia Brands in Mobile Market (Nokia does still exist in networking market and Consultation). But then ex-Nokia Mobile securing funds from Chinese Investors and Creating new Company called HMD Global (which is NOT Nokia that Microsoft didn't buy) then buying back the rights to Nokia Branding for Mobile Market and creating Nokia phones with Android in it. So the Android Phone Nokia is NOT made by Nokia themselves, but by HMD Global

I must’ve gone through every “communicator” model Nokia built. Until I met BlackBerry. And then - the ultimate iPhone. But I didn’t get into that until the iPhone 4 came out.

Lots of interesting information in less than 10 minutes. I wish my classes were like this😄.

Nokia aint dead yet, in fact, I use a Nokia smartphone...

@@farthurf.5221 Nokia phones isn't all about software. Back in the days, the Symbian OS wasn't the best. It is just the most popular like Android today, and a good ecosystem. What really makes people buy Nokia is its quality and longevity.

I remember back to 2010, Nokia was still selling those traditional phones with only basic internet function. Then from 2011 onwards everyone was crazy about tablets and smartphones and put Nokia behind.

The same happened with Blockbuster. Netflix had a market of renting DVD's and wanted Blockbuster to buy them. The CEO of Blockbuster laughed at the notion that consumers would be willing to stream movies at home and that was their downfall, and also when they refused to innovate to the changing of faster broadband for streaming themselves.

What a wonderful story !!

Didn't really discuss the downfall of the company. IIRC there was an internal power struggle between Symbian OS and MeeGo OS developers within the company. So instead of working together to achieve their goals there was an unhealthy competition within the company and ultimately nothing fruitful came out of it.

A month ago I was looking for a second smartphone to use while jogging and got me a Nokia; damn thing is dirt cheap & indestructible (has fallen into puddles and ditches). I'm a happy customer.

watching this on my nokia 8.1 ... beast of a fone n so well made with beautiful back glass design.

Nokia has made quite a grand comeback in Europe and India over the past two years, with HMD behind the wheel. However, they are far from what the company once was, especially since they practically pulled out of the American and Chinese markets.

The brought the PureView technology too ... My Lumia 950 still rocks with it.

I wish you had detailed more about the rush to release S60v5 so they could try to keep up with the i-phone, and how this OS combined with the N97 huge market gave them a bad reputation cause it wasn't good at all, up until the point when they finally released Symbian ^3 and had a great OS in hands but no market share to be relevant anymore.

The Nokia 2100 definitely did not have Snake *facepalm* that came on the 5110. I have a collection of Nokia phones at home with some 60 models and I know the devices very well.

Make a video on Goldman Sachs that would be an interesting topic

Nokia 3310...I literally thought of playing Space Impact all the time.

Those good memories when I used my mom's old Nokia phone, my dad's old Nokia phone and 2 Ericsson phones (I forgot the model kind though) and those ringtones were amusing but nowadays we have Samsung phones while my sister has iPhone. I can't believe that my mom's Nokia phone survived for years until now but she stopped using it months ago this year, she would use it as an alarm but now Samsung J7 as time went by.

Nokia was already on its way down before the launch of the iPhone, companies like blackberry and samsung were responsible for most of the early losses, people didn't just ditch Nokia and go straight for an iPhone. That would have been evident if he'd shown charts of Nokia's revenue before 2008.

Its declining in sales but still profitable lets get that straight. Nokia was BURIED when iphone was released, not quickly because people are still hesitant about a new product but realized after that nokia was a dinosaur company because of their operating software. They also failed because instead of using android as an OS they went with windows.

My first one was a 3210 and my most recent one a Lumia 930. A real shame Windows Phone didn't take off - otherwise I'd probably still be using a Nokia now.

Finland is also known for its womderful education system and for Supercell

Nokia isnt dead.... Its still around and still making phones (albeit a different company, but some of the same people) but its largely a shadow of itself much like Kodak, Sega, Chrysler or Motorola

My grandparents used that old Nokia Phone And when I was a kid My Mother used that. It was a nice and Amazing Phone.

The video was great, but it has one big mistake, Nokia didn't fall because of the iPhone..

I'd hardly call being one of the biggest networks companies in the world and bringing you 5G is obsolete. Not to mention licensing the brand to become a large phone maker in Europe and Asia again.

Nokia is back on the smartphone Market for quite a few years now . The growth is slow but steady . The phones are solid build , with pure Android , and class leading software support , being the best out of all mainstream android smartphone companies .

It's a shame what happened to Nokia. I used Nokia 7210 Supernova and my dad used Nokia E63 back when I was in highschool. The phones were amazing and I spent hours on those java games like Asphalt and Die Hard and downloading countless windows vista themes😂 P.S. Dad also used to own the legendary 3310 and I actually threw it once on a tree to get mangoes😂

before Apple;s iPhone came into existence, Nokia faced tough competition from Blackberry. the free Instant Messaging service BBM made SMS obsolete and the shift from Nokia began. But Blackberry phones had 2 major weakness that made their dominance short-lived: short longevity of the products (the phone broke down after 1-2 years of use), and the BBM ID number were prone to be dysfunctional after a short while, making the users had to renew the BBM number frequently.

My first phone was Motorola year 1994. My second phone was Nokia year 1995. Miss those days.

@@omarfarique6304 you should probably check Steve Ballmer's (Microsoft's CEO at the time) reaction to the launch of iPhone. The guy was so short-sighted that he predicted that iPhone would fail miserably due to its price and lack of physical keyboard.

i had two Nokia phones, both were great, it's a shame Nokia failed later on in the smartphone business

In February 2017, the firm started a class action against BlackBerry on behalf of a group of employees. Nelligan O’Brien Payne employment lawyers Janice Payne, Andrew Reinholdt and Karine Dion are working on the action. The dispute concerns over 300 employees across Canada who were transferred from BlackBerry to a business partner, and effectively terminated from BlackBerry. However, BlackBerry has stated that it will not pay employees any of the statutory, common law, and/or contractual entitlements they are owed for the termination. We are seeking damages for the plaintiffs for minimum provincial statutory entitlements on termination, contractual entitlements on termination, and/or common law entitlements on termination. We are also asking for bad faith and punitive damages, as well as costs. We are currently in the very early stages of this action, but stayed tuned for further developments!

I still use it every day.

Why not follow up with how Nokia went from cell giant to creator of many of the IP for 5G and now producer and supplier of end to end needs for a 5G network build out. Nokia is FAR from gone/dead or about to dissapear. FOLLOW UP PLEASE!
