How My Obsession with Reading More Almost Ruined Books for Me

I should be reading more. I need to read more books.
While I’ve talked about techniques and tips for reading more in many of my videos over the past few years, I have some thoughts about this phrase.

Have you ever pressured yourself to read more?

I first wanted to read faster. Now I don’t care anymore, I just enjoy the stories. If it takes long, it does then. Reading more? I read fiction only so no pressure to read more and more.

@@arturgajewskiphotog I felt like that for a while too. I just wanted to get through my books so I could read as many as possible, even fiction. But it defeats the point of enjoying reading.

I had to take a step back from all of my hobbies for a while because I was pushing myself to do more. I think I figured out that work has due dates and hobbies dont have to. I also came to realize I am a slow reader anyway, so doing more than two books a month is kind of unfeasible. This video is great, though, and definately helps recontextualize goal setting when it comes to reading or, really, any hobby.

Ah yes I totally get that and what a great way to look at it. Hobbies don't have due dates ❤️. I'm so glad you liked it 🥹

Nope, I never beat myself up about anything; if I read, I read; if I don't, it doesn't bother me...I and I take time when I need to :) ...like today, I have not picked up a book or a craft, and I am just pottering around the house :) I stopped doing to-do lists years ago...Don't get me wrong, I still write things down that need to be done, but then I throw the list away,(delete it as I use my phone) it's just way for me to type or write it to memory.... a Great video as always, Gina :)

This is a great video. I have a lot of guilt around my hobbies because of the productivity = worthy mindset I have. This vid is a great reminder to let that go and to get back to embracing reading for the pleasure it brings me!

Yep, I'm exactly the same, I still struggle with it honestly so this video is as much for me as it is for other people. So glad it helped even a little.

Thanks for this great video! 🙂 Love your cat friend haha For me it's a bit difficult of a story, but basically reading is the only thing that relaxes me and helps me get my energy back. With my autism this is very much needed. So I read a lot because of this, but that can take the joy out of it sometimes. So I have been trying not to feel guilty about not reading sometimes, when I actually probably should for my health. I'm also not going to do goals next year and just read when and what I want.

She's a sweetie, isn't she? I didn't set a goal this year for that very reason. I was curious to see if I'd read less because of it and although I feel like I've read less, I counted and I've read the same as last year. So the goal didn't really help me at all, it just added pressure. So that might work for you too!

Thank you for this - I regularly feel guilty for not doing things (because what you are saying applies to activities other than reading as well) off my to-do list - this helped me to reconsider my priorities.

I stopped feeling pressured to read when I stopped watching booktube. Now I read when I want to and what I want to. I can genuinely stop reading for months and not feel guilty. However, I can also read 12 books in a month if I feel like it
