Music Publishers PREVENT the use of MuseScore 4!!!

Музыка

Have you submitted a composition to a music publisher, but faced roadblocks because of MuseScore 4? Finale, Sibelius, Dorico, and MusicXML are preferred formats! Hal Leonard, Alfred, and more publishers accidentally or intentionally filter out which programs can be used in music publishing, and it is a HUGE issue!
Chapters:
0:00 - Intro
0:20 - Why is it not allowed?
2:08 - What would MuseScore 4 have to change?

I'm looking for more exposure to my compositions. So yes i'm thinking of using a Publishing House but i'm desperate to find a good Publisher and not a bad one. I don't know the likes of Hal Leonard or Alfred but those two are worth checking out? Does genre affect acceptance? I'm a classical 18th century style with a hint of modern classical any directions I could take?

@@GhastlyEJMody453 Some publishing companies don't accept unsolicited submissions (meaning you wouldn't be able to submit a piece to them to review). Hal Leonard and Alfred are relatively big and established, so they might not be able to review some music from certain composers. It can be worth it to check them out, but if you don't hear back from them, don't be disappointed! Some publishing companies take unsolicited submissions or have some competitions to get published by them. I don't think style should impact a piece overall, but it may be something to double check with each publisher. Here are a list of music publishers that are affiliated with MPA, which may help with the search: www.mpa.org/all-publishers/ I know TUX people's music (www.tuxpeoplesmusic.com/) and RWS (www.rwsmusic.com/rws-music-submission-information/) have unsolicited submissions. Zicato Music (www.zicatomusic.com/about) has better terms for composers than most publishing companies, which includes you keeping your rights. Of course, research which group is best for you, and make sure you get into a contract that is the best for you and your music! Hope this helps!

If a publisher tells you that MuseScore doesn't meet its standards and then suggests either Sibelius or Finale, they're full of it. A few years ago MuseScore had a lot of work to do. Now, it's a completely different ballgame.

What use is a publisher anyway? You certainly don't need them for digital distribution. I also don't see a publisher marketing anything for an unknown composer. Attempting to self publish seems like a viable option that doesn't involve denigrating yourself to satisfy the whims of a publisher.

Most music should probably be self published. In my opinion, pieces like easy educational band and orchestra pieces (grade 0.5-2) will benefit more from music publishers than harder pieces (grade 4-5+), with more middle school educators going through publishers than High School and College ensembles! Plus, these ensembles like having physical scores. Of course, getting into a bad contract with a publisher is not good! Always make sure any contract is as favorable to the composer as possible before getting into one!

tl;dr - Publishers will take a pdf to review the work for publication, but will want the notation file in order to make every piece look the same across the board for their company. Hello! Based on my experience, a lot of them want a Finale, Sibelius, Dorico or MusicXML file (depending on the publisher) to publish. (they will take a PDF to review it, but not to publish and sell it, as they will create their own PDF.) It's because they want to make some final notation/engraving edits to make the score have the same appearance and high engraving standards that the company has overall. They want every customer to have a similar, seamless experience with each piece they encounter, and not rely on the composer to make every engraving choice. (as not every composer is a great engraver or notater). They'll typically want their name in the front material and the copyright as well, which would not be easily changed in a PDF format. It all has to do with keeping uniformity in notation and appearance across all their scores. Here is one publisher of music: www.tuxpeoplesmusic.com/new-concert-band-releases.html Notice how each pdf has the same text for the front material? Notice how the titles all look the same? Notice now the note size looks the same with each grade level of band material? This would not be possible if each individual composer sent their own PDF in. (even if each composer tried their best to follow the publisher's standards.) Here is the same publisher's guidelines for review and publication of band works: www.tuxpeoplesmusic.com/uploads/9/5/7/3/95733592/cb_ccb_submission_guidelines_2023.pdf In order to review a piece, they just want a pdf, but in order to publish the work and make money through them, they prefer a .msxml, .sib, .dorico, or .xml, but will take any from the major notation files (and unfortunately MuseScore does not count yet). While MuseScore does export XML files, it is a gamble if the score will look good in Sibelius or Dorico. Hope this helps!

  • @TheMusicalNotesOfficial

    @TheMusicalNotesOfficial

@tompw3141 That is totally right! However, not every publisher accepts MusicXML files. This is due to importing a MusicXML can lead to engraving or notation issues, depending on how complicated the work is and what programs the Musicxml is exported from and imported to. Having an engraver work on a piece for a longer period of time due to a poor MusicXML file can cost more, cutting down on the bottom line.

Pretty much all other creative field use software that can use plugins to transform output into other industry-standard formats. It is likely that publishers or individual enthusiasts will eventually create output filters that produce scores to a given publisher's template.

A few years ago I wrote a dozen songs for a school publisher and Finale was requested instead of Sibelius, that I was using; no xml… I never liked Finale, (to be polite… 🙄), as I find it so brainy compared to Sibelius, so I asked the publisher to buy it for me and they did but I lost quite more time in learning it than in writing music… 😕 Now I’m planning to study MuseScore before buying some new sw (I own Sibelius 6.2 that’s no more supported in modern machines and I don’t want to pay for a subscription plan)

Some allow for unsolicited submissions if publishing is what you would want to do. (this will require a fair amount of research of which one would work best for you). It is not too common, but possible. More of them open up the more established of a composer someone is. (which may come with better deals.for the composer)

From what I found simply interacting with some of the publishers, some Publishers accept them, and some publishers don't. From my small sample size, a small amount explicitly said they took xml, some didn't say either way, and some said they didn't. It'll depend on the size of the organization and how willing they are to accept them. I am hoping all of the publishers will accept xml files soon, as it will expand the use of more notation software!

I am always interested in sharing ideas. Maybe some of these ideas will create more customers, as there are several young composers who do use MuseScore! Heck, I use Dorico, so any company choosing to use MuseScore does not impact me at all! Of course, I do NOT think it that publishers limiting what programs they accept is terrible. Like you stated, listening to their own customers should be their main priority. How these companies decide to run their business is their decision, and I trust that they will make the right choice for themselves! Have a wonderful, musical day!

An actual AI voice would have a multitude of subtle inconsistencies and random gibberish that I don’t hear at all here. For now I will assume in good faith this is some kind of inside joke like all those youtube comments I see that claim random things (usually from before AI art was even developed that far) are actually AI generated
