For people confused with the "hygiene" part of the pie-chart. Let me ask you this. Would you trust in the professionalism of a person who doesn't care about their image and taking care of themselves? People put a lot more trust in those who show that despite being highly active on the professional side can also make sure to find the time to look after themselves. This proves they have great organizational and scheduling skills and can properly prioritize what's important. It shows you have your mind in the right place. The way you show that you love and respect yourself inspires the thought that you apply the same behaviour in regards to your work.

Fair point. Similar to what my current mentor says (butchered quote), "If your personal life/needs are struggling, your business is going to be struggling". I've personally experienced the ramifications of pushing myself for work and then getting physically sick (thereby screwing over my future work progress). Not a great approach.

What has always worked for me are fixed project rates. I apply value based pricing principles. I make a detailed breakdown for the client. I also learned early to detail how many revisions go into what they are paying. It also helps to be honest with yourself. Be aware of the amount of work you're bound to do and ask yourself if you are happy with what you intend to charge. I tend to charge a bit more to cover this aspect. I ran into situations where I felt I half-assed a project just to be done with it, because I agreed on an unsatisfying cost and wanted to move on to other projects as fast as possible. It's bad and unhealthy. I charge more to ensure I keep myself enticed and invested in the project I am entrusted with. This way I know I deliver the quality expected by my client.

Love your videos, Matt! I really liked how you listed the pros and cons for each way of charging, I've been a freelance designer and illustrator for years now and every time someone asks "ok how much" it makes me really uncomfortable, 'cause I don't dig the business part as much and it's not as exciting as the "creative" part for me, it actually makes me suffer a little bit so it's nice to see this kind of content. I've been working that inside my head ever since I found TheFutur's youtube channel, and I have to say you guys really help me a lot. I'm not so good with words and describing what I know in my guts, so the way you put the words together is very helpful... So I just wanted to thank you, Matt & everyone else out there making my life less hard.

Great share Matthew - this is spot on. I always say that people have to want to work with you - there's so much talent out there that you can't rely on talent alone. Admittedly when I'm hiring a creative for our team, I'm looking at their work first, experience second, and then we have an interview to discover their personality. Reliability is unfortunately something that has to be tested - and is what the first 90 days are all about in an in-house team position.

Great information! I wish you would also mention the rising costs of inflation and other living costs. Those rates are the same as for the past 15 years that many motion studios have fixed. But in my experience, for the past 10 years, many newer companies have put in place overtime rates (like in other industries) like 150% (after 8 hours) or 200% on the weekends, I salute those companies. :)

Sorry, but this is cheap, depending on the client. I might be much for a small restaurant client, but indeed I know agencies that took 80.000 € for a logo. The client does not always pay for the actual output - logo - but also for the process (e.g. workshops) and for the supplemental deliverables, like a complete design guide, and so on.

Same here. For freelancers, anything above $1K for a logo design and the fear of losing the trust and long-term relationship with the client kicks in. In a over saturated market of logo designers asking from $50 to $300, unless you deal from a high-end agency with large companies, most mid-size business and individuals tend to run away feeling cheated when asking for anything above $500-1K, let alone $5K!! I'd love to see a video about how to break that huge gap between the $500 and $5.000 mark. I tend to educate the client and help them to understand the long-term value, but they also do their research and approach other designers and have a rough idea of the time needed to produce a logo.

I am curious if you have advice around the "hygiene' aspect of things. I'm a clean person in terms of personal hygiene but I certainly wouldn't describe myself as organized, I'm naturally chaotic. It wasn't really a problem until this year when all of a sudden multiple people are wanting me to work on multiple projects at once. Do you have videos based on this piece of the pie that I have just missed? Just around creating organisation in your workspace and workflow? Also, really helpful to see not just the rates but what you expect from people at different pay rates so thanks for that.

I have a feeling it's just there to illustrate just how small the rate is in the wider importance in comparison to other things... so like even down to something as specific as someone's hygeine, you'd literally be but off by that before you were put off by someone's rate if they have all the other qualities in the pie chart. This is likely because everybody in freelance worries so much about how much to charge when in reality there are so many other things you have control over to justify whatever rate you want. If you do really, really good work and have great talent and personality etc. etc. you can charge what you want and rate becomes less significant to the client when deciding to hire you.

Unlimited revision cycles for project was the hell that I had been living for the past 2 months... Until I finally told the client (literally this morning) that any further edits were going the be extra. I had literally logged over 60 hours for what should have been a 20 hour project at best because the client couldn't make up their mind on what they liked. Combine that with the fact that the client's "visual contributions" were an absolute tacky shitshow and they would NOT budge from abstaining using these things, I finally had enough. Either we put this thing to bed and out to press, or you can pay my day rate... Lo & behold - the client emails me less than 30 min later saying they were "satisfied" with how the project looked and to send it off for pre-production press samples. Funny how a client changes their mind when you put them on the clock. Lesson learned - ALWAYS put something in your contracts to limit editing/revisions rounds to prevent a situation like this.

Both are junior, I've trained them from the ground up, they have their own gear, they don't need to edit- they only shoot, sketch and capture the RAW photos and footage for us...we edit everything. A few things to keep in mind on your journey to accomplishing this goal: Charge the client based on their company. If they make more money, they’ll usually spend more. I’ve seen Chris discuss this in the past. Often it’s not the logo that goes for that high, but the story and context you create for it. Anyone can make a logo, but not everyone can make a logo that’s important and serves a true purpose beyond just “branding.” It’s totally possible! Good luck.
