How much the drummer affects the sound?

Музыка

How much the drummer affects the sound:
When using the same drum set, same cymbals and same pedal, same mics, same settings on eq and compressors.
5 drummers recorded on tape along with bass and two guitars. There’s no sound replacer, no drum samples used and no editing done.
This is not a drum playing competition of any kind. The sole purpose of this test is to find out how much of the sound comes from the drummer.
As room mics seem to mask the small differences, this test was done without room mics and without any additional reverb.
To us the biggest differences are in groove and sound of both snare and hihat.
The only thing that was adjusted during recording was mic gain to keep the amount of tape compression as similar as possible. During mixing all settings were identical and nothing was changed.
We decided to use live bass and guitars as this way the musicians would play more in groove with each other.
Each drummer used their own sticks as all of the drummers agreed that not using your own sticks would not be a good idea and would have a negative affect on their playing.
Each drummer recorded three takes. There was no rehearsing or planning.

Toni (the first one) was the best in my opinion. He played pretty simple without overplaying the song. All hits in the right place. The others didnt complement the song but somehow put themself in front of the song and the rest of the band. The point is to play what the song ask you to play. Not more, not less

Great video! Drum sticks also have enormous effect on the sound. Especially with ride cymbal. I totally understand that they want to use their own but still would have been very interesting if they used the same ones.

Here is absolutely cool video. Drummer has significant impact on arrangements which then affect the vibe and feeling of the composition. And I think all 5 are really good. To choose one its just the matter of taste according to your vision of arrangement. My choice is Jakke Saarinen cause he did what I usually prefer and demand from drummers for such kind of compositions. Though I guess if you tell any of these drummers your vision everyone may follow you as they all pro. My experience goes we usually do 3-5 takes per one composition and then just listen and choose the right beats which fit the most according to the feel and vibe.

Great video thanks for posting! It's really interesting to compare the subtle differences among drummers when they're all clearly competent at their instrument. With my eyes closed, Anssi Nykanen stood out as the most musical. Here's a guy who has probably practiced 10,000 hours just to have a 5% edge over the rest.

My pick is Risto Niinikoski, his pocket and feel sounds the best to me and fits the style of the music, he and the bass player are really locked in together.

How much the drummer affects the sound: VERY MUCH. Good job from all. If I had to choose between these drummer -> Nykänen Anssi's hi-hat swims in the music and everything is so in balance with timing.

There is a story about Anssi years back when he REALLY trained drums SERIOUSLY : Some band was training at the same building as Anssi trained drums (this was sorted out afterwards). Band heard every time they had brake between songs that somebody was hitting snare with same slow frequence. This happened everytime band was silent. After few hours training band decided to have a lunch brake. After lunch band came back and and still heard somebody playing snare drum with same frequency of beat as before luch. Band kept taraining and stopped after few ours. When band member were leaving house they decided to check who was drumming an other room. They did find Anssi beating snare drum all the time with same beat frequency in different positions. Anssi was looking (= learning) how snare sounds when hitted in different parts of drum with different velocity. Band members exit training house and Anssi kept hitting snare.

I think it would be more interesting if you had each drummer play the exact same thing. Then we could really hear the difference between their playing rather than their interpretation (or the way they decide to play something).

I think they all have a unique style.....but I like the last 2 best. Both seem to get more out of the snare in both style and how hard they hit.

Just because this wasn't a competition, the winner is Sami Osala 🤣 They all had their moments on this comparison, so it's very hard to tell really, but last two left this kind of image that they were the best for me. This was an awesome video.

This was tough to pick a favorite. They all did wonderfully. I think the aim of the song would factor... If this were the backing of a popish single, maybe jari's straightforward hihat feel would fit best. The first drummer's verses felt best if the song were to stay an instrumental and maybe he'd edge out the others then. But that's just being nitpicky... They all sounded great. Great video idea!

Sound? Not a lot really. Feel? A lot. Some drummers (like Jakke and Sami) use rimshots on the snare, which is the biggest differentiating factor between them sound-wise. Feel on the other hand is very different from drummer to drummer and that's what makes music.

Big like to the video! I want to know some thing, I know since the mid 90's Pro Tools, it's easy and cheap to sync not so good drummer, but some times I hear records from the mid 80's and even the early 70's, and the drummer sounds good, tight, with loosen clear dynamics. But in live, they sloppy, and there are big names like that, how back on those days they cheated? Also some early 90's death metal albums, the drums are tight as hell with dynamics, not plastic like today, and yet sloppy live, how?

Thank you very much for the comment. Difficult say, but all musicians have their moments and to capture such in studio has happened. Surely even back in the days of analog tape it was possible to edit it using a razor. And at least in US&A there's been said that replacement drummer wasn't a rare thing on sessions.

Perhaps playing live there are other things to contend with, such as fatigue - playing a long show has an affect. Also being able to hear what you and others are playing on stage in a different acoustic setting is very different to the studio.
