I grew Peaches and Cream this year. First year trying corn, and it turned out well. I had enough to give some away to family. I decided to till under half a yard of compost after seeing your videos on in which you described corn as a heavy feeder. Grew it in blocks like ya'll did. No drip tape though. I did not have a very many where the kernels did not grow till the very tip. Lucky enough for no corn worm. Not this time. We had plenty of rain and I put fertilizer in the furrow. Put some dirt on top of it, and planted directly on top. Hilled it later. Thanks for the good information. Worked out for me.

Where I'm at in the Mojave Desert, winds can often exceed 60 mph. I planted my corn tightly 3" apart with rows 3" apart in a section about 8' by 8'. The first crop is five feet high and the way they're planted keeps them from laying down in the wind. Each stalk is supported by other stalks. Planted second crop two weeks ago and it's two feet high. Planted same way. Watering I have a long sprinkler wand that I shove through the rows from both sides. It's only my second year of gardening but I learned not to plant corn widely spaced because once there's any height the winds will snap them or blow them out of the ground. In 1976 I spent a summer detasseling Funk fields in Iowa.

So I was checking and feeling on my corn before we came camping and thought I had worm damage bc one of them seemed a bit short and while we were camping (still at camp) I kept thinking about the worm damage I thought I had (been doing the weekly preventative just like u all said bt, garden insect, etc) and so it’s been on my mind thinking about it, but now I seen u have the *nibblers* so ya gave me hope that that’s maybe what I have. Fixin’ to head back home tomorrow and so I’ll be deciphering either way what it is but at least now I have two ideas instead of just the one ☝️ so many thanks ! @@edcollier2526 We had a really good yield last year with a lot of full ears. I think in total we ended up around 40-50 ears of corn. We had enough to freeze and give away which was nice. Best tasting, sweetest and juiciest corn we have ever had. (Really not biased :) everyone else said so also). We grew the HOSS Obsession Sweet Corn. Nice healthy big stalks and they produced 2 ears per plant and a few had 3. Ears were mostly uniform and this variety gave me 8"+ ears. A really good bi-color SH2 sweet corn. It worked out a ton better than my previous test of planting corn in a block the year before last.

I use an empty suntan oil sprayer filled with veggie oil to spray the silks to prevent worms. Only 3 worms in 6 100ft rows! I use close line to keep corn from blowing over. If your corn was missing kernels last year it didn’t pollinate fully. Next time take one tassel and touch all the other tassels with it. I take all the shucks off except the last few and put it in freezer bags. No more silking and blanching or freezer burn.

@@JudgeD-hc9vw yes, I cut off one and walk down each row touching every tassel on every stalk with the one in my hand. Do this when you can see that the pollen releases into a small cloud. The tassel “seeds” are kinda loose and dangling. It makes a little yellow pollen cloud. Each plant will benefit from not only the pollen from its neighbor, but all the pollen from more plants.

I have been planting my rows 32" apart. So non-standard! The decision I have pretty much made at this point is that I'll be transplanting corn from now on. I did that for some this year and figured out that corn transplants really well. If you're doing a smaller garden like I do, then transplanting uses less seed, lets you get that near perfect in row spacing, and will let you get a couple of weeks head start on the season. Jared is a city boy if I ever saw one. Greg, did you have to drive all the way to Atlanta to get him?

When you do thin the crop, how far? Finally, when you put up your cream corn, how big is a pack? I planned on canning mine since you never know what our power grid is gonna (thanks to JB). Hi Greg, do you get out there and weed the corn or do you spray, I’m asking because I planted 6 = 75 foot rows of corn and the weeds have been a struggle, every year we get windstorms that come through and lay down a lot of the corn so this year I did an experiment and planted 2 rows of sunflowers around the corn as a windbreaker , so far it’s doing well

He needs to take some country boy bites of that corn. lol. I'm amazed at how many people I've shocked over the years when I grab an ear of fresh corn from my garden and bite right into it. Some act like you're eating a raw piece of meat. lol
