My girl is so small (11.4 pounds) and she's a month shy of three years old. I can't even measure her food, I have to count the pieces of kibble: 15 pieces in the morning, 12 in the afternoon, and 10 at night. She has to be fed every 8 hours to keep digestive juices from being overactive and making her very sick. I put a small amount of hot water in the kibble with a dollop of pumpkin. (By the time it's stirred up, the water has cooled to a comfortable temperature for eating.) She's little, but she's mighty. Thanks for your videos. 🐾❤

I’m a make your own meals owner and I also believe in adding kibble. A part 3 with what you believe is best if someone is doing it themselves would be great. Like raw meats, boiled chicken, veggies and which additions to that for a Cavalier. I realise a lot is covered in a kibble but I also like to give them fresh meats etc. Would love to hear what additions and possible supplements to the food can benefit a Cavy’s health specifically. I see a lot from others making these meals but would appreciate yours more..

Thanks, Charlie. We have a lovely 6.5-month-old cavalier that is because of your great videos. She prefers to eat wet food that we cook in-home, can you please guide us as well about we food? And if you can guide us about the heat of female Cavaliers in another video will be very appreciated as always.

I would probably start with a protein such as boiled and shredded chicken or cooked salmon, add a grain like brown rice or oatmeal, and a vegetable like broccoli or carrots or squash. You can vary things by adding eggs, cottage cheese, high fiber cereal, or goat's milk. Make sure you add a dietary supplement that has all of the micronutrients I mentioned in the video. Thanks for the idea about the heat cycle. I'll give it some thought.

Puppies tend to have to pee right away when they wake up, so it's outside first, and then feeding. However, eating stimulates bowel movements (usually within 30 minutes or so), so after breakfast it's back outside again.

They need at least a moderate amount of exercise, so they should get several walks per day, or have ready access to a large and secure exercise area in which they can romp. They are very much lap dogs, so a high level of athleticism is not something you would expect from them. However, if you can do something like Agility, that will provide more than enough exercise.

My Honey Girl loves her food. At 12.2kg the vet said she is a little over weight. She gets super excited about food. He whole body sways in excitement and with other dogs in the house its hard to always monitor when she sneaks an extra bite!!! I try to always feed her seperately but my poodles are terribly slow fussy eaters, the complete opposite to my Cavalier so they often leave food and if I forget to but it away its gone in a flash as soon as Honey gets to it. Honey is a beautiful docile girl with the most stunning Lassie dog coat that shines like silver. She is very pretty with no table manners😂🐶💕

Thank you for the information. There is a lot of discrepancy between cavalier owners and cavalier clubs to what the best diet is for the breed. We all just want the best for these sweet dogs. I have a 3 year old gorgeous girl that is temporarily on royal canine urinary s/o while she is being treated for a UTI and bladder stones. She also needs to lose a few pounds. We give her blueberries and frozen string beans for treats. We Also started used a small amount of Cheerios as you recommended to keep up on her training instead of high calorie treats. Is there any other healthy snacks and supplements that would be good to consider for this breed?

  • @chaskat35

The frozen green beans are a great treat. You can also use the little baby carrots that come in a bag. Both offer lots of chewing time with a very small calorie content.

My Cavaliers are just turning one. One of them is 25 lbs. I switched to a “lite-adult” food, same brand used for puppy days. So for losing weight, you recommend 200 calories/day? They aren’t very interested in this new lamb mixture, for puppy days it was chicken. They will eat it from my hand, no vomiting. thanks for all the great info.

I usually cut the amount of food by about 1/3 for a dog that needs to lose weight. So if I was feeding 3/4 of a cup regularly, it would go down to 1/2 cup for weight loss. Don't forget that there are lots of variables. A dog that's very active could require 25% to 50% more than one who is more laid back. Younger dogs also usually require a higher calorie count than older. You can use a senior food if you want, but the regular adult food in smaller servings will accomplish the same weight loss objective.

My tri-color Madison is very tall and slim for a Cavalier. She weighs 27 pounds and eats one half cup of wet food twice a day. She is not food driven like most Cavaliers and will not eat dry food. I actually have to cook for her in the afternoon which is sometimes complicated because I have to make sure she is getting all her nutrients. She is almost 13 with a little arthritis controlled by natural supplements but no heart disease, not even a murmur. I feel lucky to have her in my life.

27 pounds is quite heavy for a Cavalier, unless she is unusually large in skeletal structure. Make sure you check to make sure she is not overweight. Happy to hear that she has reached 13 with no heart murmur!

She was one out of 8 in her litter and grew to be much taller than her siblings. Breeder was quite surprised at her height. Go figure.

I live in Victoria, Australia and by law female dogs of any breed are legally only allowed to have one litter per year in order to try and prevent cruel puppy mills. I’m sure there are still unscrupulous people who still over breed their dogs but that was what was deemed to be in the best interest of the breeding female. Hope this helps.

  • @chaskat35

They come into season about twice a year, so it's a minimum of around 6 months between litters. Most of us don't breed them in more than 2 consecutive seasons, so you'll see gaps of a year or a year and a half pretty often.

Is it normal for your dogs to ask for more food in the winter? My cavalier is approximately 20 months old and asks for about an extra 1/2 cup of dry food during the winter months. Where we live it stays in the 20s and snows frequently in the winter. Since allowing her to have this extra food her winter coat has grown extremely thick and when I check her body the way you described to it doesn’t feel overweight. She is a very petite cavalier, only about 8.5 lbs at full size. She is active and in excellent health otherwise. I’ve just never had this experience with my previous cavalier.

I've never observed a seasonal fluctuation of dietary needs. However, your girl is very small, and a good portion of their metabolism is devoted to maintaining body heat, so it's not unreasonable to think she might need a bit more in winter. Just make sure she doesn't get overweight.

I’ve noticed that some dog foods have a variety of choices that vary by age and dietary needs, such as weight management, skin and coat, joint health etc… My dog just turned 7 on Jan 31st, and I had been giving him adult small breed for ages 1-6. Does it matter if I continue giving him the same, or is it important to give him the food for his age range? He’s still active and doesn’t act like he is slowing down anytime soon.

We don't routinely switch the older ones to senior food - just a controlled amount of adult food is usually fine. If they have medical issues that require special foods, or if they lost too many teeth to chew, we will change their diet.

Thanks so much for the useful information sharing! Just wondering if I would like to have my 10 weeks but only 1.8kg cavalier grow bigger when it is adult. Can I feed him 400cal as your instruction(but for 5pounds pup)? Will it be too much for him?

  • @chaskat35

    @chaskat35

    2 жыл бұрын

For a puppy that age at 1.8 kg, the appropriate calorie intake would be anywhere from 325 to 380 calories per day, so 400 is not really out of line. As he grows, you can increase that amount, but somewhere between 7 months and a year of age his needs will decrease greatly. At that point, you will have to decrease his caloric intake to avoid his getting overweight.

I would love to see a video going into detail about how much exercise cavaliers need as puppies and then as adults to stay healthy. I know heart and joint problems are a concern as the dogs age, so a proper amount of exercise (not too much and not to little) right from the start is important.
