How much QUICKER is a GT3 than an entry 911 on track?

.............................................................
Time for a track battle - with a difference! Mat’s brought together the Porsche 911 GT3 and the entry-level 911 Carrera, and he’s taking them both out on a hot lap.
Now, it may seem pretty obvious which car will set the fastest lap time... But given there is a £40,000 price difference between these two 911s, we wanted to find out just how much more performance you get for £40k!
Let’s take a look at the stats, starting with the 911 Carrera. It’s powered by a 3.0-litre twin-turbo flat-six that delivers 385hp & 450Nm, and tops the scales at 1,505kg.
The 911 GT3, meanwhile, being a track-focused car, is a bit lighter, weighing 1,435kg. It’s packing a glorious 4.0-litre naturally-aspirated flat-six engine that revs to 9,000rpm and puts down an impressive 510hp & 470Nm - that’s just 20Nm more than the Carrera!
So, should you spend the extra £40k, or does the entry-level Carrera pack enough of a punch on-track? Stick with Mat to find out!

You guys coming up with new content and it's amazing. You've gone from Reviews to Drag Race/Acceleration/Break tests to Track Day comparisons. Well done Carwow.
Great video! Two entirely different ways to enjoy a 911. I‘ve owned/own them all, and for my money, the real turbo 911, built as light as possible, skipping the sunroof, full on electric seats, FL, & the like, is the way to go if living in the U.S. The GT3 is the way to go if you are a track junkie. The lack of low end torque, especially in the U.S. where speed limits are low, make the GT3/RS a disappointment. My ultimate 911 is the GT2/RS. It’s the king (holy grail). It has Mega torque, power, speed, handling, dynamics, flair, style, and it’s rare . It’s my next/last new 911 I’m buying to replace my race/light built Turbo. There, I said it. The truth hurts. Cheers all.
Awesome entertaining content Matt. You should definitely do more of these and if possible include 1/4 mile time comparison. 👍

Thanx Matt. Very informative vid. Porsche's engineering is just mind bending. For an entry level car to deliver such astounding performance as opposed to the high performance track version is beyond comprehension. And you have proven definitively that every average male over 40 needs a 'basic' Porsche.
Seeing how Steve Sutcliff went almost 3 seconds faster in an M3 around here, that Matt did in the GT3. I’d love to see this same review with a professional driver so we know what they can actually run.
Can't believe a standard 911 has nearly 400hp! That's crazy! 20 years ago it was probably 100hp less in a Carrera 2!
This might be the best car video I've ever seen. It is truly useful information. I loved the other multi-Porsche test as well. Now do something no other auto channel or magazine has ever done: drag race every single available Porsche model against each other. Porsche won't want you to do this, because it probably show just how close they actually are. But it would be a great video.
Love these track comparisons, do more!
Matt, I would absolutely love to watch you and a few mates of yours go on an adventure !

My 992 C2 is so practical I have binned my other "modern" performance cars. The Carrera 2 also has the advantage of a softer ride on real roads with 19/20 inch tires, and £750 main dealer services every 20,000 miles. I have now completed 25,000 miles in mine, it is incredible. The depreciation has been £0. I get 34 mpg quite often too. Without doubt , the 992 C2 is not only the quickest and best but also the cheapest car I have owned. What a great car. I still love the GT cars too but not every day driving to work!
As a fellow 996 owner, love all your videos showing the incredible versatility of these fabulous cars, I know how much I love mine !!

Another comment we can file under “things people who don’t go to the track say”. 2 second on a tiny track like that is a big margin. In a standard 20 minute track session the GT3 would lap the Carrera and then some. That’s not accounting for the Carreras performance falling off as the brakes and tires go out of optimal range while the GT3 holds consistently and maybe even improves. It’s not even close.

what I'm interested in is how much improvement to the laptimes if you put Cup 2s on the povo spec carrera?
How much of a role do the tyres play in the times? What would be the time difference on the same tyres? would be good if all track tests were done on the same tyres as they are an easy, relatively cheap modification to make that has no insurance implications. It might make a good video to find out? do this test again but switch the tyre selection around see if extra extra 40k is worth it or would it be best to just but a better pair of shoes.
Porsche fan, so I would love a comparison between the Turbo and the GT3. Also, would love a comparison between the new GT4 518 and its "brother" platforms, such as the Cayman and Boxter. An interesting comparison would be a base Taycan vs a base 911. Last but not least: a comparison between the GT4 and a 911 (GT3, Turbo or base version) :D

Hey Matt if you could drag against or in any car which would it be???
Would be interesting to see a head-to-head between a GT3 and Carrera 4S. I reckon with the added horsepower and all wheel drive, the numbers would be very close indeed. Added bonus of Carrera ownership: no ridiculous rear wing!
Cayman GT4RS vs. GT3RS has a 10s ring difference despite same engine (Mischa reckons due to better multilink suspension etc). Over a ring lap difference between these two would be insane
Drag races we wanna see: 911 turbo S vs 765LT Rimac Nevera vs model S plaid vs Chiron vs F1 Yianni vs mat vs daniel 100m foot race C8 Corvette vs R8
This is a great review!!!
This seriously speaks very well for the base model!!!
Great video Mat!
You gotta love Matt for just being himself. 😂.
It is better to start the timing when the cars are fully stopped, at the beginning of the track, what speed had the gt3 when the timer started? What about the stock one?
Was looking for that cool helmet liner in your merch store...
The base 911 looks much more elegant, without the ugly spoiler and other details. This is a great example of diminishing returns.
Really enjoyed that video
Just from how Mat acted while driving I can tell that you'd rather want to go for the GT3, sooo much more emotions.
Your channel is clearly the most fun for petrolheads, no doubts about that, only jealous will say the other way... keep up with the excellent job!!!
