How Much Power Does An Energy Efficient Home Use

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

How much power does an energy efficient home use? If you've ever wondered this, I'm sharing the data from my own home. I built a 6000sf home, and employed several methods to increase energy efficiency. The home was built with Insulated Concrete Forms, the basement slab has insulation under it, and the hvac is a ground source heat pump (geothermal). All of this has resulted in reduced energy bills every single month. This will continue for the life of the home. A little invested up front can lead to massive long term savings.

I have just built a new house in the uk with 150mm insulation board beneath the slab. The walls are 125mm concrete then 125mm rock wool then 125mm thermal blocks. It’s just so warm. I’m delighted I put the money into insulation.

Have you considered trying passive geothermal cooling with your loops? I have seen your loop temperatures in the up 40s and that should be cold enough to do it if you use a heat exchanger just might not get the latent load you do with a heat pump.

Those temps were due to the heat pump being in heating mode. The actual ground temp at the loop depth is in the 60's.

if you have insulation on the floor and walls, whats your situation with moisture , is that a concern and how would it be controlled. i am asking because i seen some videos where insulated homes with heating generates moisture which needs to escape.

You'll need some sort of fresh air system, preferably an HRV or ERV.

I am nearing building our same square footage home as you in Kentucky, 3k+ house 3k+ basement. I am going with Nudura ICF and they are recommending an 8" basement wall and going approx 10' high with 2 1/2" foam floor insulation with floor heating sections then a cement pour completely underground with no windows but an access door to the"utility room".. The upper floor will be a 4" Nudura ICF wall 9' tall with double insulated windows. My questions are, how much energy loss do you find by having windows (I did not see a video on that) I also have plenty of property so you suggested a continual underground tubing run for Geothermal instead of a loop system for even more efficiency, correct? Thanks for the great information and calculations in your videos and of course some need updating but I'm sure you are very busy.

I have no idea as to the thermal loss of the windows, so I'm no help there. I have quite a few videos outlining my geothermal system. Check them out as they will probably answer your questions.

Check out Spray Jones, RR Buildings, and Matt Risinger's channels for more ideas. Or look up Joe Lstiburek talks and interviews. There's a whole world of building techniques out there. ICF can be good, but so can advanced framing with modern sheathing and sealing products like ZIP and spray foams. RR Building just finished up a long build series of a post frame build with full LP weatherlogic sheathing, careful tape and metal flashing details, and full closed cell spray foam. This still has some thermal bridging, but the seal achieved with the closed cell spray foam is pretty impressive and worth quite a lot. Matt Risinger did a more traditional stick frame build on his personal home that has a lot of neat technology, featuring an unvented attic and "false" soffits, which seems to be catching on. He also has a lot of videos on building to high level of air sealing and using ERVs to do fresh air venting and recover energy from exhausted air as new fresh air is brought in. ZIP R-sheathing is another full thermal break solution that can work with more standard stick or post frame buildings. SIP systems are another very interesting solution, often used with post and beam construction, but can be put on top of more traditional stick frames. It also offers a continuous insulation layer with no thermal bridges.

Yes, icf eliminates air infiltration in all areas that are not penetrations. The foam provides an r-24, but the concrete acts as a thermal mass.

How long do you think it will take you to recoup all the costs of building everything? Including building the house itself to be more energy efficient. Also, the geothermal system, and the solar system. All of it combined was indeed more expensive than buying a normal house of similar size and just doing things conventionally. So have you estimated how much time it will be before everything pays for itself?
