    Brilliant guides, exactly what a beginner like me needs!! A quick question if i may, if you calculate the surface area of a canvas board (regardless of size) does the total amount include medium + water or just the paint alone before adding anything? Thank you!

  • @LeftBrainedArtist

    @LeftBrainedArtist

    3 жыл бұрын

    Normally I consider it paint medium. You generally aren't adding much water at the end so that amount in negligible. The only exception is when you are doing paint and water only (think Rinske Douna Dutch pour) since there is no medium and quite a lot of medium being added. I also have a beta Acrylic Pour Paint calculator that will do the math and calculation for you here - leftbrainedartist.com/acrylic-pour-paint-calculator/

    Because 1 ounce of paint covers about 25 square inches of canvas. So for every 5"x5" square of canvas area you need an ounce of paint. Thick paint you need a little more. Thin a little less.

    I am so thankful for your knowledge and willingness to help others. Your videos are so helpful. I am so new and have not even done a pour yet, but I have my colors and excited to start. Let me make sure I understand. If I am doing a pour on a 24x24 canvas I would need a total of 25 ounces of paint (576 plus sides 48 total 624 ounces). The total 624 would need to be divided between the number of colors used to determine how much of each color, 4 colors then 156 oz of each color? What about the white color that goes onto the canvas before the pour, how do I figure out my ounces for that or is that part of the total 624? I have Floetrol not sure if it goes in my 4 colors or the white on the canvas; however how do I figure the ounces for that?

  • @LeftBrainedArtist

    @LeftBrainedArtist

    2 жыл бұрын

    You need 25 ounces TOTAL of paint. You can decide how you want to break that up between your colors. I usually put about 30% of my total paint (7.5 ounces) on as my base paint for a normal base coat. You can divide the rest between the colors evenly or adjust based on which color you want to be more prominent. Keep in mind transparent paints will seem to mix and hide more than opaque ones.

    Thank you so much! I've just started and most instructions are only about ratio of paint to medium, etc. Do these measurements apply to pouring over something, like a vase? I had an unfortunate session and I concluded I just hadn't mixed enough paint; maybe I didn't thin it enough? Anyway, I'm trying to decide whether to keep it as is, or redo it. 😬

  • @LeftBrainedArtist

    @LeftBrainedArtist

    This applies to only horizontally applied surfaces (canvas, boards, etc). Vertical are different because of how the paint flows. Technically they should take less but practically I have found vases and the like take slightly more unless you are really diligent about the paint getting everywhere on the base of the object.

    If you want to wet to the whole canvas with a thin layer of paint an then do a regular paint pour on half you need at least 25oz of paint. Even just doing the calculation for HALF of the painting doing a traditional pour is 27oz - (36*36+36+36) / 25 ~ 54oz of paint. I would recommend making a big tub of the base coat and just storing any extra for a future pour. You don't want to have too little paint and have to make paint while the stuff of your canvas is drying and setting up.

    Hi, The base canvas coat, laid down prior to the actual pour, I take it, is worked out on the same principal: sq area ÷ 25. Obviously if a puddle is needed, the above calculation, will not be applicable. Woyld you be kind enough please, to confirm. Many thanks. Vinnie.

    No. Base is about 30% of the total paint being used for the painting. You use the other 70% as your pour. It will cover still because you have the base coat down and it facilitates movement of the top layer.
