The Ford Taurus I did on my channel took 2 quarts. I used Omni that reduces 1:1 and didn't have to do the jambs. I did have to get more color for the roof, as there had been a previous repair that reacted with the reducer in the paint. The clear I used about 3 quarts (after mixing) to do the whole car including jambs and under the deck lid. Spot on again! Good video!

The last paint job I did was on the top part of a 1986 Suburban,everything above the stock stripe. I used enamel. I went through the better part of a gallon. It was deep and looked great.

Great video, and I agree! But I have a bunch of old grey beards/friends that are still shooting with high pressure guns, and are avoiding switching to R P or HVLP spray equipment! Even though I’ve stressed to them : how efficient (75% +) the new guns are , versus high pressure spraying guns , which is maybe 25% if you are lucky! I’m not saying you can’t get an excellent finish with high pressure, it’s just wasting materials! Old dinosaurs are hard to convince!

I think you hit the nail on the head 2.5 to 3 quarts is plenty, lots of variables using the right shade of sealer is important too. Good Video!!

Thanks just starting on the fender the car had been painted but has some issues on the fenders paint curling in spots been told to strip to metal not looking forward to it have done spot repairs but never complete guy skim coated whole fenders no fun..

That is a great question. However, it depends on how you want it to look. If you are matching an existing pearl color, you will need to do a letdown panel. This is a small test panel, with a strip with only 1 coat a strip with 2 coats and a strip with 3 coats. Then clear them. Then see which one matches the color the best. If it's an overall paint job, it's just your preference of how you want it to look. Kind of hard to explain, perhaps I will do another video for this in the future.

i used one quart on the last two cars i did (02 jetta and a 06 cobalt). they were both side hits so instead of painting half the car and then blending i just sprayed two light coats over the whole car then cleared them. note though both cars were painted the original color so no door jams or anything like that was painted. I also used shop line for both.

How much more would I need to paint the jams? Also should I spray the jams first? I haven't decided on a brand yet, but would the amount differ greatly if I decided to go with a matte finish paint or clear?

Why not just state how many square inches one quart of automotive paint will cover for one coat? If that amount varies with paint brands, then state how much is required for brands that you've worked with when properly thinned/reduced/etc.

hi Donnie, when you buy 2 quarts of paint for paint repair job on car should you mix the 2 same colors together to make sure you get even color? and i know 400 to 600 grit sandpaper is for basecoat and 800 to 1200 grit sandpaper is for clear coating, is there a just 1 sandpaper grit where you can use for basecoat and clear coating?

So you recommend 4-6 quarts reduced for base and clear. How many coats of each are you inferring? Also some base and clear have different reducer ratio. If a base ratio is 1 to 3 vs 1 to 2, you get more mileage for your $; what is there to know about difference in mixing ratios (e.g. quality and coverage)? thanks!

im curious if you want to shoot me a squick answer, 1988 mkIII toyota supra. planning on doing it in 6q7 or imperial jade mica which costs by itself almost 120$ a quart. if you could look at that vehicle and give be a best guess as to how much you think would be appreciated

What about a single stage “Omni” PPG ? I’m painting a 58 Impala ,, and that’s a pretty big car.. are you saying still 3 quarts is enough for the outside and under hood and trunk?

Are you talking about doing only 1 full car coat? Also, tell me: is it a good idea to top off the clear on the entire coat (to blend in repairs and to give some extra material for buffing/polishing in the future)?

I started school back in jan/12 . Since then I have painted a decent amount of cars. Now When I paint, I usually only use nason and buy 2quarts for an overall. Ive done several 01 honda accords, 05 accords, 06 bmw 525, 05 nissan altima etc. Hope this helps.

I always buy a gallon primer and I only use 2 1/2 to 3 quarts of it priming a 1979 Chevrolet Silverado longbed truck

I'm painting a car that was previously painted with acrylic lacquer. Will I have adhesion problems trying to paint over acrylic lacquer, or can I seal it and top coat it?

Would you double the amount if you were using something like a single stage acrylic enamel paint, where you don't need clear coat? Or would 1 gallon do the job for a full size car? Would 1 gallon of primer be enough for a base coat? I am planing on changing the colour of the car (besides, I have to get to bare metal in most places because the OEM paint is peeling), so I'll be trying to get into all the nooks and crannies, and doing underneath the hood and trunk.

That is going to depend on the brand of paint you use. If you go to your local auto paint store, they should be able to tell you what you need and a cost to paint it.

Relative answer but on avg size hood I say 8 it per wet coat. Leaves a little in the cup so ya don't go sputtering on the tail end.

I sprayed some semi trucks years ago, but I can not remember how much paint it takes. Hopefully someone on KZread can help us with this question.

Donnie- have a question on the use of flex agent. In all videos I see painters spraying the bumper covers and body with the same primer, base, and clear. I was under the impression that a flex agent was needed on bumper covers ? Are entire vehicles being painted with a flex agent additive in primer, base, and clear - is this how you would do it ? You can use flex agent for bumper covers, but most urethane paints do not require it. PPG anyways! Back in the lacquer and acrylic enamel days, it was required for flexible parts. It is not going to hurt to use it on bumpers if you prefer. I hope this helps. Donnie

Yes, that should be enough. 3 quarts of white should be more than enough of the white. You will use more clear so you may go with 4 quarts of clear. White is a high hiding color so it should cover the red well.

I am assuming you are going to paint the door, hood, and back jambs. So it will take more paint, but I thing 3 quarts to 1 gallon should be enough!

I'm planning to paint my Ford Expedition. Planning to run a whole coat of primer, then single-stage urethane paint. I've sprayed several projects, but I'm still an amateur. I have a hunch that I should buy 2 of the 1-gallon kits, not 1. Does that sound right?

How much paint did you use?

Doing something like this is going to use more paint and clear. It may take a gallon of paint and 1 to 1 1/2 gallons of clear. It's hard to say on a job like this, but that is my guess. Be sure to send me pics or video of your project. 66 gto is an awesome car.

I would not sand and buff on metallic. This may disturb your metallic pattern. If you clear coat the metallic, then you could sand and buff. I am not sure how many spray cans it will take for sure. Thanks for watching.

How much paint do I need to cover the whole car of a 2007 Chrysler 300

Something that should have been mentioned is how much sprayable paint vs how much unmixed paint. I'm not a pro, but most of the paint I used ends up about 50% paint or clear, then the other 50% is reducer and hardener. Also if you want to change the color of a car it will take more paint since you will want to paint many other places. And if you want to drastically change the colors it could take more also. Add a little more clear if you want to wet-sand and buff and polish.

1 can of paint, 1 can primer, and 1 can 1k clear per a bumper. I think that bad, but 2 layer of each cover the bumper.

1 1/2 basecoat 1 1/2 clear coat @ 100microns spraying with hvlp 30psi on inlet 10 psi on nozzle average size vehicle

Damn I'm guessing my 2 gallons I used on my single cab pickup may have a little more paint then I needed. No wonder that shit can't get scratched deep enough to hurt it...

Depends on your personal taste and how rich u want it to be/less opaque best thing to do is do a let down panel take a panel prime it tape it off into 4 sections or more, and shoot 1 coat on the first section 2 on the second wct.. and see which you like best
