How Much Money do I Make Selling a Gaming PC...?!

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

In the previous video we talked about ways to identify opportunities as well as things that are just natural to the market. Though in today's video I go over how much I am personally putting together some systems for, what my line of thinking is like and also other subjective things that you need to be aware of when selling a PC.

The biggest turn off I find with selling second hand PC's is people expecting 24/7 tech support on it. Especially if you're targeting people who don't know much about PC's

Bryan, I'd like to start off by thanking you. Last year, your video's have inspired me to buy parts, build and sell gaming PC's. Thank you. Intel and nVidia sell very well here in Calgary, Alberta. The used parts market is ripe with good used parts. Thanks to our 3 Memory Express locations. Locally there are more Ryzen and Radeon builds for sale than Intel and nVidia on our FB Market Place and Kijiji. With better spec's than the intel builds. As much as I would like to buy and build with used AMD, they're a tough sell. The people who buy my builds don't understand Ryzen and Radeon. People want intel and nVida. They just don't sell to first time buyers. I've built and sold 25 4th gen intel gaming PC's last year from February to December. Selling an average of two PC's a month. But never two PC's at the same time. I've seen plenty of guys posting multiple PC's at the same time, and having them listed for months. In my opinion, don't give people too much choice. It will just confuse them. As more and more Ryzen's are hitting the used market, I find they've lowered the 4th gen intel prices and gives me leverage when making a deal on used intel and motherboards. Ranging from i5-4690k's - i7-4790k's, 16Gb DDR3 1600Mhz, Corsair MP510 250Gb M.2 (Boot), 500Gb SSD (Games storage), Cooler Master ML120 or eVga CLC 120 (sometimes the CM Hyper 212 RGB Black Edition), Tempered glass case (Cooler Master MB500 or Fractial Design Meshify C), MSI AC905C Wireless Dual Band, GTX 970's or 1070's, 600-750 Watt evga PSU, LED strips, Windows 10 Pro. The majority of my builds were black with red LED's. People love black and red. I've tried a couple of times to do black with white LED's and they don't sell. The most common boards I buy and use are the Asus Z97 /WiFi or the Maximus VII Z97 and usually a stable 4.2Ghz OC on the i7's. I buy a lot of brand new parts for a couple of reason's. First, no one wants an old looking case. The easiest way to sell a used PC is a new case /w Tempered Glass and LED's. Secondly, when people want to upgrade, they can just swap the MoBo, CPU and RAM. (Later they can upgrade their GPU, which I've helped them with and bought back the original GPU). I give them everything to start them off, and they can upgrade when they can afford better hardware. My gaming PC's usually stay on the used sites for about one to two weeks. I always list them at the beginning of most peoples payday week. I find listing at the beginning of the week of payday gives people a week to check out my PC, compare against other PC's listed, do their research and ask friends before finally pulling the trigger. I always list with good, clear pictures, and a decent write up (including game benchmarks and Cinebench/Heaven results). People need something to read when they don't know anything about PC's. I know this is a long winded comment, but again, thank you for inspiring me to start building and selling. It's always been a hobby of mine, and last year, I hit it hard. Thank you for your videos. Regards, Andre.

Hey man great read, the payday thing is interesting, especially if its normal to get paid monthly, like Japan, in Australia most people get paid weekly or fortnightly so not really a thing to list around. I am finding at the moment ring fans are selling extremely well lol.

  • @VincentFunk

    @VincentFunk

    4 жыл бұрын

@@techyescity Most people here get paid every two weeks. Not everyone is paid on the same Friday, but most are paid on the same Friday as myself. Yes, ring fans help complete the look of the PC. I don't skim out on fans when it comes to my builds, I usually buy the same fans as the CPU cooler to give it that balanced look. Not all RGB fans look the same while lit up, and that would bother the hell out of me, if that was my machine. If I don't like it, i'm sure my customers won't either. I always place my AIO rad either on the back for exhaust if it's a 120mm, or on the top part of the case if it's a 240mm exhausting out. Yes, I've tried pulling air in, and yes, it does run cooler, but usually only by 2-4 degrees (plus the RGB/ARGB fans look better when they're in the exhausting config). With most Asus MoBo and Asus GPU setups you can set the GPU as the temp sensor (with AI Suite III) for the bottom fan to feed fresh air to the GPU. Usually the front two fans are doing the most of the work and I use 140mm fans. The top fan in the front is feeding the rad, and the bottom fan is feeding the GPU. The rear and the top rad fans are exhausting air out. All fans are always set with fan curves and adjusted while benchmarking the CPU and benchmarking games to reach the perfect balance of noise and performance. I believe the secret to building and selling custom gaming PC's is, always build them for yourself.

That Hard Drive in the fractal design case doesn’t mount horizontally, you can remove the small panel and then screw it to the panel, meaning the hard drive end up parallel to the side panel. The rubber mounts/holes in the small panel line up with the holes in the bottom of the hard drive. Great video mate!

I also sell gaming PCs online and after a little over a year in business its turned into my primary source of income. I started by building a free website on Big Cartel. I then promoted my website by using local selling apps such as Offer Up, Craigslist, Let Go Etc. I was selling 1 computer a week with zero advertising cost plus a 35% return. 5-6 months later I had made enough money build a professional website and start promoting the website on google. I started selling PCs when I was only 16 now, I am 19 and it has funded my first semester of university and, has allowed me to live comfortably unlike the average college student who barely gets by. Its not easy but, with dedication and patience anyone can become self reliant through their hobby, mine being computer hardware.

I agree about PC aesthetics such as cables. The biggest value is in the price of the performance in the components. You can add a fancy case or RGB lighting, but neither deliver the performance that is desired.

What I'd like to add is that not everyone is looking at specs when buying a gaming PC. I've found this to be especially true for lower priced PC's; people will have criteria that you normally take for granted in a higher priced PC. Things like Windows 10, an HDMI port (to hook it up to their TV etc), or an SSD are the things that people who are looking to get a cheap PC look for. Putting that in the title can attract buyers in the lower budget space.

I've been selling PCs since I decided to build my own to slowly upgrade my rig and paying for it with sales. I've probably sold 16 PCs now with an average profit around $150 (USD) because I'm super picky about what I'll spend. $90-100 on RX580 or 480 8GB, $100-110 on GTX 1060 6GB, $130 for 4th gen i7 with board and 16GB ram. I even bought a $120 Vega 56 XFX dual fan version once. I've definitely paid off my PC with an i5 9600k, Z390 ITX board, GTX 1080ti and Lian Li TU150 case plus the 32" 1440p 144Hz monitor. I started with a Phenom X6 1055T, 16GB RAM and a Radeon HD 7850.

Late to this one, but I picked up selling custom gaming PC's as a hobby on the side and have been doing it for about half a year. I've been doing exactly what you mentioned in this video before the video, checking the market, seeing what sells and what does not. I've probably sold about 15 in the timeframe. The key, as Bryan said, is to get the deals low to maximize the profit. I've hardly paid market value for anything except CPU's from Aliexpress. The one thing I've found that actually sells like hot cakes is absolute budget rigs with the older i7s/Xeons. I've had people drive over 2 hours just to get a rig with an X3470 and a R9 270X for the asking price, and have had people ask over the asking price for a similar system. Even if the system doesn't look that great, I've found that for some reason the budget market really sells. I feel like this is because for most people, if they're on Marketplace, they're looking for something in the lower budget second hand, but if you have 500-600USD in your pocket, people are more likely to build something new or have someone else do it for them.

I'm from Brisbane, completely agree about the sub-$200 pricing, I paid $250 for a second hand GTX 1060 6 GB G1 Gaming only months after it's release around end-16 early-17 admittedly a good deal but then sold it in January 2020 for $180. (Sorry kuz I should of inbox you first) The value is phenomenon. Pascal seems to be a the pinnacle for value/performance GPU's. I don't even look at Kepler anymore and I'm holding onto my GTX 1080 Strix OC now until at least next gen GPUs. I play many different games literally none of them have RTX.

After all you dont need to touch it after its all connected up. Plus 1 can would last a dozen or so builds.

Brian, how long between starting up building/selling gaming PCs did you allow for reputation building and then making profits of your work? Obviously, I don't think I can start making real profits on builds when I have only 5 sales under the belt, and I was only trying to break even for parts. I usually work with new parts, and I target the $1K crowd with military peeps (young dudes with steady income). I'm not even trying to rake in profit, as right now building rigs is more stress management and therapy for me. However, as I gain more experience, I feel I need to start getting return earning for my time and expertise at the very least. Just wondering what your two cents on this matter might be. Muchos arigatos!

There's money to be made if you're willing to check the used listing constantly and snap up the deals ASAP. I don't check CL or Offerup enough to snap up these deals.

I'm not Bryan, but I just run Prime95 and Unigine Heaven at the same time and watch the temperatures. I stop the test when the temperatures hit their peak and level out, that way I can see if the cooling is adequate and if the system is stable. This is actually more a worst case scenario tortute test than a stress test, so if it survives then it's fine.

Couple things I have to say, first of all that last HDD in the case is mounted wrong I think, shouldn't it have the underside facing the side panel with the screws in the bottom? second I have to say that cases are really cheap down in Auz, here the cheapest cases are $45 CAD before taxes and for an ATX compatible system you are looking at another $10-15 with tempered class hitting $80. - Most importantly how to you title your ads on systems with Xeon's in them? do you use an equivalent i series name or how do you market them?

Almost every pc I have ever bought off of ebay has had some issue with it. 1. overheating cpu 2. ram dislodged during shipping 3. hdd bad It makes me nervous selling over the internet. All it takes is a minor issue that an inexperienced person can't get around and then you lose the return shipping costs or worse. I think I prefer to sell in person, demonstrate the stability of the build, and not have to worry about it again.
