Thank you for making this video. Some folks just don't understand why these 3 doors are more expensive than the 5 doors. Most market got their 3 doors since 1994. While USA only got it in 1996 and they stop selling it early before the refresh second generation. Other market got the second generation 3 doors too. Simple supply vs demand.

Exactly. The more I drive mine the more I fall in love with the 3 door. I've driven multiple 5 doors and never liked them, they look funky to me. They are definitely rare in the US, although I'm sure the pandemic definitely made things worse.

In Latin America-Bolivia, the average cost of a three-door "Rav 4, first generation" is from $8,500 to $9,000.

in my area i have been seeing the 5 doors selling in the 3500-5k range . almost all are Awd i had a 97 Awd manual 3 door last year but ended up selling it for $7000 because i can no longer physically drive a manual . i ended up picking up a 1999 automatic Awd convertible with fresh all terrain tires and a old man emu lift kit installed already a couple months ago for $2600 with only 81k miles because the seller needed quick cash to move . i just bought and had the hard top installed which was $1100 for the hard top plus $900 just for shipping to Alaska :( But it makes a huge difference during the winters up here . I also had a set of Hankook studded tires mounted right before it snowed . The remote start i had added is great in the cold. i am almost glad the winters here are too cold to use salt on the roads I really want to put it on stock suspension but i cant find any oem rear springs

Wow you got a steal for a convertible! Even after the hard top and other expenses you're still doing real good. I plan on adding a remote start to mine eventually and an EMU lift. Which remote start did you get?

I ended up paying $6300 for mine, but had to also pay 1k on top of that for shipping from Arizona.

@@theOGRAV4 Oh it was a Manual transmission at least. I repaired / welded the driver side floor because it was gone, did the suspension on all 4 corners and wheel bearing all a round as well because the bearing was grinding like crazy. Replace the crank shaft pulley too because it split in half on me while i was driving. Brake in front with slotted disc, transmission fluid , differential fluid. Im waiting on balljoints, sway bar links and tie rod. Ive spent more time repairing it then driving it but winter is coming up here in canada so i hope it treats me good. Keep up your videos man i love it, cheers from Quebec🍻!

Where is the bull bar from? If custom, can you provide some backstory on the build?

I actually don't know actually. It came with it when i bought it. I will do some research and launch a video about hopefully by the end of the month

It's clear you did the research, and as someone who looked at these cars for awhile, they don't come up, with the features/condition that we desire - so yes, you didn't get a steal, but you got the car you wanted. I was looking at 3 door AWD soft top in Detroit that was $9k. 48k miles. I lucked out when someone responded that they just came into a 3 door hard top manual FWD with 98k miles. The car was owned by an old woman and garage kept. I live in Philly, and they lived in NJ so I lucked out travel wise. I ended up paying $1,500. So far the only thing that needs to be done is going the bottom some undercoating, as it has some surface rust - but nothing serious. The tape player sucks...so I might find a solution for that...

One owner, older folks cars are the absolute best. They typically take care of them real well and are not abused. You got an amazing steal for sure. I personally would keep the tape player. That's vintage right there!

@@theOGRAV4 Oh yeah, I'm keeping the tape deck! It was always a turn off to see cars for sale that have the ugly new players with those cheesy lights. I just need to clean the deck, it doesn't play tapes well, and hooking up a tape-to-iphone jack isn't even worth it... Looking forward to seeing more videos about your car, it's one of a kind!

I have had several 5 doors and they usually sell for around $3,000. I’ve noticed the market is softer with gas and inflation as it is . Last year I bought a 1997 3 door, all wheel drive, 5 speed, with the torsion limited slip rear end., dual sunroofs.A shop said it had a bad engine, but the crank sensor wiring was bad. It didn’t run. It’s pretty beat up, but it is a beast off road. I live in Montana and the perfect mountain road car. I paid $700 assuming it needed an engine which it didn’t.

Wow sounds like you definitely got a steal! Specially with that limited rear slip diff, which are basically non-existent in the US. I don't off-road so it really isn't a plus or minus to me, but I bet that comes handy in those Montana winters
