How much heat does Pettersson deserve?

Ойын-сауық

Elias Pettersson has one goal to show for through four games against the Oilers and his head coach Rick Tocchet called him out after their Game 4 loss. How much heat does the Canucks' highest paid player deserve? Bruce Boudreau weighs in during Wednesday's Talking Point.

  • @dman1417

He deserves all the smoke. Petey is getting paid an absurd amount of money because he’s supposed to be “that guy”, a superstar, the type of forward who can singlehandedly take control of a game or swing momentum at crucial moments. But besides that one PP goal his teammates served up for him, he has been completely invisible in both the Nashville series, and here against Edmonton, not to mention the 2-3 months prior to that in the regular season. You don’t even notice this guy when he’s out on the ice, and when you do, it’s usually because he’s falling, coughing up the puck, or getting absolutely bullied along the boards. Pettersson just has no FIGHT in him, no extra gear to switch to. He’s a very skilled player no doubt, but I just don’t think he’s built for playoff hockey,

One problem with Petey is that he's not a Tocchet type player. Neither was Kuzmenko. Tocchet likes guys that are physical, that aren't afraid to get their hands dirty. Petey is a highly skilled player getting pushed around physically and mentally. They need someone on the coaching staff that can get to Petey in a way that Tocchet couldn't get to with Kuzmenko either. He's just too soft and I don't think Tocchet has much patience for him right now so he's just hoping he finds his game but it's not working. I'm hoping he's just injured and will feel heal up soon and step up.

He's getting push around, off the puck like a 12 year old kid. He stops up before any engagement in corners, and always starts from a standstill. He needs to be moving constantly as this, especially playoff hockey is much higher pace. Look no further than Garland's play. Speed, always moving. Even Miller has moments rushing in on the left side. And of Course McDavid, always in motion, either getting out of the crowd, into a scoring position, or creating open ice for others to score. You see it constantly where McDavid draws a crowd, only to pass to Draisaitl. Peterson doesn't always have to score goals. He seems to forget there's 4 other guys out there with him!

A lot. He has pulled disappearing acts like this before. His rookie year he went off a cliff after the allstar break. 3rd year he came out slow and then was injured. Next he came out slow after signing a contract and pulled it together after the allstar break. This year, again was good and fell off a cliff after the break. It seems he can only get it together for half a season, or play only OK (ppg) for a whole season. He needs a hardcore and proven training routine with other peers in the offseason. And to work on his skating. His core strength is a joke and gets pushed too easy. He barely even bends his knees. He works hard, but not on what he needs to.

Other young stars in the past have had slow starts to their playoffs careers. The Canucks have played a 'dump in' style and have almost completely lost their puck control game in these playoff. Even Hughes has suffered from the way they are now playing; good defence, dump ins, forechecking, and waiting for bounces to win low scoring games. The Canuck look nervous, tentative, reactive, and sloppy and are eeking out wins with ugly but determined hockey.

If the Canucks lose this series, his play (or rather, lack thereof) will be a huge focal point in discussions going forward and he'll be lumped in with the likes of PLD, Darnell Nurse, etc. for worst contract in the league.

The problem with Petty is that he's too small. At the beginning of the season, he was probably 20 Lbs heavier than now. He's probably got the body type that burns through fuel quickly, and he should up his calorie intake significantly. At the beginning of the season, he was harder on pucks, wasn't flopping after anyone touched him, and was able to make hits. Someone feed this guy some cheeseburgers. I don't know what his calorie intake is now, but it for sure needs to be increased In the playoffs, you have to be able to hold on to pucks, and with his current frame, he's not strong enough. I'd probably start with 6 eggs and steak for breakfast, pasta with 2 chicken breasts 2-3 hours before a game, and AG1 with whey or an equivalent green drink twice a day for maintenance. Bare minimum 8000 calories a day for a guy with his metabolism.

He's playing lost. I thought it was a lingering injury, but it's Tocchet's style of play. Petey doesn't fit, he can't be defensively responsible and productive at the same time. He's also weak. Not sure I've seen more than 15 shifts all season that he hasn't fallen down from the slightest contact. he's gone 3 steps backwards. Maybe he can reset after this season, but right now, putting in a minor leaguer in his place would probably help us more than hurt us.

Well A.) His sticks are total JUNK! Break every second one-T (literally garbage sticks). You don't see Miller or Boeser's sticks breaking constantly. B.) He deserves 11 mil worth of heat per year and that is a TON of heat! Personally he would of never got that contract out of me until he earned it in the playoffs. PROVE your worth it. 1 Goal in what ... 21 games now? The rest of his points are secondary assists ... that's 4th liner kinda of performance. C.) Petey's biggest issue and why he can't perform recently is EFFORT and BALANCE. He just can't battle well and his skating is weak (no strong strides anymore and no balance). He gets pushed off the puck constantly, rarely wins any board battles. The only thing he's got going for him at the moment is defensive positioning. If he loses that, I'd just replace him... matter a fact, I'd replace him now, waste of roster spot big time. PUT Podkolzyn in the lineup. At least his effort level is really high and he'll check the crap out of the oilers Dmen. Petey needs to get back to rookie Petey and if you haven't seen rookie Petey folks, look it up on youtube. That kid deserved 11 mil.

Paying Peterson the amount he was paid is a big whoops , he is weak on the puck therefore unable to produce in the playoffs , trade him .

He spends more time falling around on his knees. Praying to God that nobody sees just how bad he actually is playing he thinks by getting his hundred points in the regular season. He's done his job just another over paid under performing superstar they never should've got a contract like he did I trade him

All you so-called canucks fans giving petterson s***? Look how many opportunities he creates for his line mates and he gets none back. The coach needs to put him with better players so stop blaming Petterson Cause if you are you don't know hockey so shut it
