Dude - absolutely love the transparency of this! Pricing can be (probably IS) the most difficult part for artists, mainly because of 3 reasons: 1. Doing our art is easier for us and we don't think about the fact that MOST people can't do what we do (especially the ones that are commisioning us). 2. We don't consider all the associated costs of not only things like paints, but even the smallest of supplies that is needed, as well as travel within the same town still has to be accounted for. 3. We are too modest in ourselves and our work.

I just visited this mural today in Columbus, it looks insanely beautiful 🙌🏼. The details are incredible! I’m curious as to what kind of caps you used for the hair, especially on the bearded man. I didn’t even know caps could spray lines that thin!

Thanks 1 million! Spray paint is definitely an amazing medium when learning a few techniques. There are a few different caps that I use that will spray different patterns. For once you learn them, an entire world is opened up.

Thanks! How you enjoy the read. Columbus State, and a few other community members were involved in choosing the people. and one of them i actually met while i was eating breakfast at a local spot. Mikey was a Vietnam vet and had a ton of stories so i asked them if he could be one of the individuals. a locl photographer Sammi did the photos for reference and then sent them to me to paint.

Thank you for sharing this! I got my butt kicked for an underpaid project. That I’m still questioning if was worth it or not. I’m learning from it but for you to share this helps me see that I wasn’t crazy! I only settled because they told me I was too expensive. And could find someone else cheaper. Definitely a learning lesson. I’ll have to stick to my guns next time

Definitely stick to your guns. If they can tell you that they can find someone cheaper than let them. Sometimes it takes for them to receive poor quality work for them to realize that they have to pay for good art. The more NO’s you give a better quality you’re YES’ become.

So for travel i know based on the project you have to come out of pocket for a lot of these. Pricing is the hardest thing to calculate for me i feel like i lowball myself for most projects

When you do a mural like this are there any artistic decisions you are making on site as you do the mural? And besides digital are there any other mock ups you do of the piece, like in your planning stages?

The background is basically me free styling everything and colors. It was mostly the photo references that were used as the main focus when doing a presentation to the city. And it was a quick mock up. I usually take a picture of the wall and splash color in procreate on my iPad. I then insert reference images/photos. That is basically how I communicate what I want to paint and this is because a lot of my color schemes are improvise while I’m painting so that I don’t have to stick to a specific mockup color

Hi I want to start doing this type of art would you suggest me getting spray cans or an air brush ? I ask as spray cans seem a lot more expensive and probably will waste a lot at first as I’m learning. Any help is appreciated

And airbrushes too small for larger walls but I would say to first start with brush work while you are learning how to use spray paint cans. It just takes time to learn it but once you do for the type of work do you want to do it becomes easier and easier. Practice makes perfect

I took about 10 days to paint.

I think it's about 300 feet long and goes up to 20ft high.

how do you go about renting the construction lift that ascends for high places? I dont even know what it is called I' still waiting on the city manager to get back to me about doing a few murals for the city. I've only done two murals. should I expect to get payment? is that included in the budget. I want to be professional as possible. but I'm not savy on what to present or how to make a presentation. what should I have prepared? As of right now I'm working on a few mock designs to present to them once I get a audience with the city manager. but the city assistant manager said she wants to get me approved for one. I sent a few of my artworks along with pictures of the comissioned work and 2 murals I've already done. I really don't know what else I need to do next.

One question.. I just completed my first outdoor mural on super rough cement block texture. I'd love to seal it so the salt/alkaline doesn't seep through like it's done for other artists commissioned in this area. I used Killz 2 Primer and ordered Vandlguard to spray over top next week. BUT I ordered the "Bloklok with Graffiti Guard" Do you think this would be fine enough just to protect from weather elements and keep that salt/alkaline from seeping through? Not to worried about Graffiti in this area...Super helpful video as usual btw! Can't wait to see this mural in person.

That is an interesting question and situation. I have not run into that predicament at all specifically because denver is dry. Vandlgaurd has been pretty good for all sorts of protection. I also have not use bloklock as well, but I’m going to pick some up to try so that I can review it’s effectiveness. Definitely let us know how it goes.

@@iamdetour Ahhh that makes sense that you wouldn't have to worry about it as much. Lol I'm from Atlanta, currently in Huntsville, AL so lots of humid/rainy weather year-round... I'd love for you to do a review! I'll definitely try to report back with whatever happens.

When working on a city project how do you give the break-up of the cost? Supposing their mural budget is 20k, then do you come-up with a budget to match 20k?

Not sure of the total sq/ft area. Took about 25 galllons of latex to cover everything

Not sure of the entire square footage. That’s because of the wall tapered off in both ends mainly are usually focus on the areas with the references as the area I base my estimates on. That area was about 17x60

@iamdetour sounds about like $15-20/sq. ft. then. If that's the case, I'd agree it's probably a third of the price that you'd charge with your experience. The travel experience/new places sometimes outweighs budget ratios. Turned out great. 👍🏻
