How Much Does It Cost to Replace a Demon 170 Engine? The Truth Hurts!

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

I recently had to replace the engine on my Demon 170 and many people asked how much it would actually cost if I had to pay for the repair out of pocket. I reveal how much the bill would have been if Stellantis had not honored my warranty. The number may surprise you.

    So I had that stage4r package with Forza performance/cicio performance completed in October and I have 3k miles on the build. This past Monday the 2.7 redeye supercharger came apart and metal pieces got sucked into the engine and it's locked up... So now I have to replace the engine on my own.... Just paid the car off and it only has 11,000 miles on it total .... it's a sad day for me.... My new mechanic said the 2.85 upper pulley is too aggressive for the redeye blower, he said the 2.4 can handle more than the 2.7.... have you heard this before?

    Racer X I’m a dealership tech. The warranty labor to replace the complete engine and oil cooler with cylinder head removal for inspection is 13.5 hours. Our warranty labor rate is 161.00 = 2160. I’m sure the tech was paid diagnostic time that would be extra time. Also the customer pay labor time would be about 26 hours. Yes on an engine replacement Stelantis under pays the dealerships/techs. The engine cost is 31315. That’s only the engine. Dump the car.

I personally did all the rebuilding of engines and trans and never come close to $50k cost. If the block was bad I found a block. I'm curious what engine and I'd assume a cat at that expense.

    I must admit Stellantis has pushed the limit on performance. Here's the kicker, in the real world you cannot have a daily driver and a race car in the same machine. When cars get over around 650 HP you have more of a racer than a daily driver. No matter how great the engine is, all that horsepower and torque stresses things to the limit and yes they break even in new, pristine condition. There is a reason true race car engines are broken down after each run. The 170 would certainly be a fun daily driver, providing you don't overdo it, because power breaks things, Going to car shows, street fairs, and occasional fun at a stop light would be okay; but if you are indeed going to race it, be prepared to spend big money on repairs. It is, what it is.

Dodge pays for the engine replacement and nothing more, not the time spent talking to Star and nothing for dealing with the service rep that came and inspected the car. I had work done on a ZL1 yesterday. It was $159 per hour on the labor rate. Sure everything is a little more in Tampa. Lets call it $170 per hour. That comes to 117 hours of labor or almost three weeks. Yes, some extra stuff done. Never heard of a crate motor taking 117 labor hours to install. Since this was the first time the tech had ever done this install there must have been a huge amount of training, a big learning curve, consulting, double checking, and testing to get to a 20K labor charge. All good, hope this one is trouble free and traps a higher MPH than the last one right out of the gate.

I think the average guy would not be so lucky. But truthfully as well. You underestimate people’s abilities. There are way more than the .02 % of people out there that could do this job. Proper tools and equipment is always important. But there are in fact many skilled mechanics both professional and non professional who can do that job. lol moment, the mechanic went the extra mile and checked everything, including my spark plug gap. 😂

    I had 67 heat cycles in the engine prior to putting in on the dyno or racing it. It actually has very little to do with mileage and more with heat cycles and variable load. I have seen guys with 1500 miles and only a dozen heat cycles on the engine and its not properly broken in. I have also seen engines completely broken in correctly at 200 miles. The 1500 mile thing was put in there for the guys who take long trips at static rpms that don't understand how to properly break in an engine (more of a catch all). Dodge has already stated that the engine failure had nothing to do with the break in process.

    Whenever we have engine failures all components related to engine performance were checked oil coolers, radiators and torque converters just to name a few. If there was a problem they were replaced or rebuilt. Equipment dealers are different than car dealerships though. But when you are talking the Demon 170 without mark ups the price is not much less than a 2023 Cat 420 back hoe. I think every component related to that Demon 170 engine's performance should be inspected at least.

  • @nicocaps5624
    @nicocaps562426 күн бұрын

    I just looked at demon 170 specs and it doesn’t not have a dry dump oil system. Nor external separate fuel filter. Also, a reason I think the car is so hard to launch perfectly is the rear suspension. #1- demon 170 ADS suspension on drag mode: firmest rear compression and rebound. Front is firm compression and soft rebound). The rear end links are fixed and cannot be adjusted. So is the rear sway bar. I think if you upgraded the coilovers, added adjustable sway bars w end links, and changed camber angle for more negative camber then there could be a vast improvement in the launch. And first 330 ft.

    They may have done it that specific way of unnecessarily changing brand new parts on a brand new car that doesn't need to be changed but in practice you can absolutely swap an engine out and put a z new one in with just about nothing else other than a fluid flush, I've done that many times in my life with no issue. As long as it's a block engine and you have a lift, tools and the know how it's really not that hard just time consuming

    Reminds me of when the 6.7 came out and morons toasted them cranking them up or doing something careless to get the warranty voided. Pump was $4-5k, injectors were $2100, head and block dizzying $$$. Anytime somethings brand new, and *should* be under warranty, it's wickedly expensive to pay out of pocket dealer prices.

    I’m sure they had to do a lot of tuning to get the car just right since it has so many features which ppl forget. the ecu learns and adjusts as you drive. But stellantis also had to diagnose the issue. And figure out why the engine broke. The obdII scan will tell you a lot. But many times it doesn’t bc sensors can be tricked if problem is from a combo of mechanical issues. Either way the demon 170 is made to run 1/4 mile drag races. That demon launches so violently and has so much torque that parts will definitely break. It’s not a matter of “if” but “when.” That’s why the manufacturer warranty for this car is worth its weight in gold! When these demon 170’s are resold used. I would only ever buy one from a dealer that’s CPO. And buy the longest, most comprehensive CPO warranty they offer.

THAT THE 50K QUESTION. anything before kinda Doesn't matter only if the car act up doing the break in Process then plz let us know. Because if that car do what it did before dodge is F! Period Fyi, they weren't flying all those people in just because you're special x this is Big money corp business. They making sure to cover their end. Because that car mess up again. My usual obligatory comment that you should go back to a Last Call Hellcat (or even go pre-Stellantis on the cheap and mod it). My local dealer's region just lost their tech rep (on that note, their entire reach back chain was removed). Tim K is gone. US engineers being laid off left and right. A dealer mechanic can work on a Hellcat. My local dealer actually just did an engine swap on a TRX and said it was relatively easy. I wish you all the luck if you choose to keep the 170 but brother, I would not. If the idea of a blown motor is an inch more stressful than "Unfortunate, but that's part of the game," I don't think it's an ideal candidate to race.

    I know the idea of stepping back from such an exclusive club has got to be gut-wrenching, sincerely, but if a Hellcat will last you and any dealer can work on it, that's the move. You could also do an entire series on trying to get better times than you got in the 170. Would be awesome.
