Thank you for all the raw food videos! My cat is on raw food diet thanks to your recipe, and this save me a lot of money! My cat had some health problems two years ago, so I switch my cat food from dry to high quality can food which is about $1.50 for 3 oz. I need to feed my cat 2 cans of it, it costed me $3.00 per day ($42.00 for two weeks). For a two-weeks raw meat diet, I can get 6 LB of meat for $9.00~$12.00 and organ for around $5.00. Even I maximized the cost to $20.00 (include all the vitamins and eggs), it is still cheaper than the can food~

@ Will Dwyer I don't think I could kill a rabbit, chickens eh-h-h maybe not so much. I know. I'm a meat eater. But my meat comes on white, Styrofoam plates covered with clear plastic film or in whole-body plastic bags sans head, feathers, feet, & innards, from which I remove, chop and cook. I don't have to kill anything--that makes me a hypocrite. Perhaps it would be best for me to release a rabbit or chicken into a small, enclosed pen and release my cats into it and let nature take it's course. I catch and release bugs which enter my house, not to mention the squirrels, chipmunks, and birds my cats bring into the house. And here I am, a retired military man who would have killed a thousand 'hoomanz' with little thought about it just because some president wants to be remembered as a tough, war president. To me, animals and hoomanz are not on the same level and you know which ones I hold in higher respect.

Wow! I was looking into the prices because I have 2 cats and their wet food has been so expensive to me. I’m happy to see the raw food would actually be cheaper in comparison to the wet food I’m feeding them. The wet for has been about $4 a day for both of them. Would only be $2 a day with raw food. Thanks so much for this!! Your amazing!

We have been making raw cat food for a while, I think almost two years by now? And we spend around 25€ (so around $28) per month and cat. The only expensive thing we had to buy was a freezer to store the pet food. Our meat comes in boxes that we re-use to portion the daily food amount of the cats. The supplements are what's expensive, but if you divide it by the months it will last you and put that amount of money aside each month, it's very affordable too.

Awesome points! In addition to comparing the dry food to the raw food The dry food may be about .30-.50 cents cheaper a day, BUT like you said, it's the worst thing for your pet....AND a pet owner using dry food makes up for the difference in the cost by needing to purchase more cat litter b/c the litter would have to be changed more frequently due to smelly poop and pee, also more expensive and frequent vet visits, Your video has inspired me to transition my two cats Oliver and Lunchbox to a raw diet... theyve been eating half wet half dry, but my handsome boy Oliver has recently developed alopecia and extreme itching on his left thigh and the patch has become bigger....I've suspected that it's allergies, even though the vet took a look and said it's "hormonal" and recommended just brushing him and adding omega 3's... meh, if it's as simple as adding omega 3s then clearly it's something he's eating that's causing the itching and shedding, so, We've cut back on the dry food (we used to use instinct) and now only have wet food for now... but they don't even want that anymore... ugh they are both so picky, so we will see, but it seems like the perfect time to transition, and in a week or so I could introduce small pieces of different types of raw meat to see what they might like, then get the recipes together for them 😊 unlike your handsome man Puppy who likes his food more like a paté, Oliver and Lunchbox ONLY like their food chunky, but I refuse to hand chop the meat into little chunks, LOL, so we will see how we work it out, lol, (but I might just end up hand chopping chunks of meat though...LOL!!!) Sorry for such a long response, lol 🙈 Thank you so much for insight!

I just discovered her videos. I know your comment is several years old but I was curious as to the outcome for your cats as well your time, ease of transition, etc. I have one cat & one or two kittens I'm adopting so I'm looking into getting a better diet for them as well as me & my partner. I'm planning on raising my own meats as well as some chickens for eggs. My father & grandfather worked for USDA as a meat inspector as well as a vetanarian so I've been in many slaughter houses/meat production. I saw some horrible & disgusting things in some of these places making 'human' grade meats. I'm babbling...

Really depends on cats/portion. I have two active Bengal kittens and they eat 2 - 3 times the portion of an adult cat. That said, I make about 9 lbs raw each week. My cost is also a tad higher because I use a specialty chicken supplier to keep the meat fresh without contamination (I know the handling). At first there is an investment for the supplements but buying in bulk from Amazon is much cheaper over smaller packaged amounts locally. (Buy once a year.) I try to cycle the frozen food through no more than ten days/batch. The cost is about 87 cents/day/cat and that is because kittens eat so much. I compare that to Royal Canin Bengal dry food at $50/ bag which feeds one adult a month for $1.60/day. When the kittens slow down consumption the cost should drop to about 50 cents/day.

I'm new to cats and how to care for them. I aquired an adult male cat recently who is on a dry food diet. He occasionally hacks a hairball which totally grosses me out. Will a raw diet cure this? I was not a cat person before, but I love this little guy. I want to help him in every way possible.

  • @niccolealdrich4890

key h Cats are bound to get hairballs at some point. It comes from them grooming themselves. You can reduce the hairballs by keeping your cat well brushed with a deshedding brush. (I use a fine slicker brush) I can't say anything on the diet at this point as I have not tried it yet. I have several kitties so it will be and adventure to switch them and our dogs over to the raw food diet.

I will definitely be considering this when I'm ready for my next fur baby! Can you tell me about how much a serving quanitiy is? I don't remember if you said in the video of you making it. Just remember you putting some in the Tupperware containers. Was it about 1/2 C for a serving?

She said its 50 cents a meal which is typically 3oz can. So a tiny bit over a $1/day for full day. Cats normally need a little under 6oz can a day unless you have a smaller or bigger than average cat.

When you consider the vet bills, feeding my cat raw is real savings. So many of my friends have either had really high vet bills from their cat getting kidney problems which is common in cats who eat dry food. Out of curiosity, why do you use a blender over a meat grinder? I used my food processor at the beginning when I used boneless meat and vitamin premix. I'm SO glad I invested in the grinder. Big batches only takes minutes! It takes me longer to mix up the vitamins than grinding the meat. Makes it a gazillion times easier and faster, just saying. :)

I recently switched to raw, after eliminating dry food completely a long time ago and being only on wet. I am currently giving them "Primal Chicken & Salmon Formula Nuggets Grain-Free Freeze-Dried Cat Food By Primal" which is about $20 a week for my 2 cats.I am trying to see if it's really worth it going trough the hustle of making it myself, what do you think?

  • @hipstersrcool

    @hipstersrcool

    6 жыл бұрын

YES, it is worth it to make yourself. I was also feeding my 2 cats Primal food and spending 20-23$ a week on it. I'm realizing that while it is a little more costly initially to feed raw with buying all the supplements, tupperware, possibly investing in a meat grinder, etc., 17-20$ every 2-3 weeks is obviously a huge decrease in spending and I believe the savings from making the food yourself will slowly pay for those initial investments :)

Is there ANY relatively healthy cat foods I can buy in a store? Not permanently but just for as long so I can get the money together to buy all those things because when you first buy everything it's ridiculously expensive and I am not able to buy all of that straight away. So does anyone know any relatively healthy wet or dry food I can buy that isn't too expensive?

Before I seriously considered putting my cat on a home made wet food diet, I was going to switch them from the Nutro dry kibble they're on to Nulo dry food, which appears to be pretty healthy and are moderately priced at around $35-$40 for a 12oz bag. I've done research on multiple brands and their cost value, Nulo seems to be one of the better choices.

Beef and rabbit are great. Elk, moose, deer are also good options. Stay away from pork and fish.

I'm a little confused. You add Lysine which is optional for puppy's eyes. Well, this is cat food. Do you feed the same exact food to you cat as you do to your dog? This is a recipe for cats, right? There was another reference in there to puppies too. ?? Oh wait! I think your cat's name is Puppy! Maybe that's it! lol.

That part about comparing wet cat food's price to the raw cat food's price was waaaaaaaaaaay off. A $0.53 can of wet food feeds a cat for the WHOLE DAY. A $0.53 meal of raw food feeds a cat for, well, a meal. So, no, raw food is actually twice as expensive as wet food lol. However, that is for the really cheap stuff. $0.53 a meal is actually cheaper than some popular brands like Blue Buffalo, Merrick, or Wellness. Nature's Variety is about $1 a meal, or $2 a day, and yet it's still really popular. In the end, while I still feel that raw food is very expensive, it's still cheaper than most good wet food, while also being better than said wet food.

It's not waaaaay off at all! She said that is her specific case and making small batches. Mine comes to about $40 for 60 POUNDS! (50+ lbs not including water) So buying by the case, my food comes to about $.65 per POUND!!!! Not serving, by the POUND!!!! And it's super fresh chicken.

That is impressive, I gotta say. Though I was more pointing out the error in HER calculations rather than just raw food in general (I worded my reply rather poorly...hehe). I still have no idea though how you are able to find that cheap of ingredients lol. Edit: Nvm, just read your comment down below haha.

Allison Koester Just to be clear about my sources, That case of Leg Quarters comes from the Costco Business Center, or I actually get it from Restaurant Depot. There are only 10 CostCo Business Center stores in the US! Here is a great article about them and, yes, anybody with a Costco Card can go: costcoconnoisseur.blogspot.com/2015/08/have-you-been-to-costco-business-center.html?m=1 Restaurant depot, however, only retail store owners, restaurants, businesses, etc, can get a membership card.

Karl Ruehs Bargain hunting at its finest, I guess! I'll probably feed my kitten a raw diet once I move out of the house (well, she won't be kitten at that point!). I'm a minor and I know that my parents wouldn't be so keen on having to buy a meat grinder, another freezer, and a bunch of plastic containers for MY kitten xD.

Allison Koester To be fair and balanced to your point of is it really cheaper, I did buy a $450 Cabella's 1hp Grinder and another $100 on stock of supplements, containers, scale, $160 used freezer, $500 new freezer, etc! LOL!!!!! 😹 With the grinder I've also got into making & stuffing my own fantastic sausages; Hot Italian with Hatch Chile, Asian Chicken w Ginger & Soy Sauce, Brats, Lamb! And others!!!!!!

Oh man slow blinks. My 2 new kittens (brothers) don't blink for me. I'm constantly looking like a moron slow blinking at them lol. Of course they ended up loving my wife immediately (foster carer was a lady so that's my excuse). Yet the smaller guy doesn't like me touching him and the bigger guy likes being around me (well they tolerate my presence and will sleep on my bed). Big difference vs them crawling into my wife's jumper and letting her give them snuggles. When they came I had already read about giving them distance and how to pat them correctly and not doing it if they don't want it and allowing them to come to me for etc. I now think this advice is flawed as I caught my wife picking them up and patting and my scientific approach failed haha (I laugh to cover the hurt). Hopefully with time they will come around. Otherwise with this diet I might be stuck with them for decades ;). Maybe time to feed them Whiskas (jokes cat lovers)
