Very interesting video. When you got to your Sub, it reminded me of my experience. I bought my son a Sub 16610 in 2005. Went to the biggest AD in Toronto, they had a couple in stock, he chose the one he wanted (his big mistake was not taking the green bezel 50th anniversary model, identical price), and I asked if there was any possibility of a discount, not expecting one. Sure enough, she said yes and took off 15%. How times have changed. Unfortunately I lost my son, and now have his watch.

I’m sorry for your loss. In terms of watches, there hasn’t really been great deals since before the pandemic fir the vast majority of watches. I bought my first Omega Seamaster 300 new in 2003 for around $1000. Just bought a new one in 2022 with a “discount” for $4800.
I prefer an open question rather than saying, is there any movement on price? Too easy to get a no. “What discount are you prepared to offer?” is a good opening gambit. Puts ball in their court. But definitely building rapport is important. Make dealer realise you’re genuine.
Many thanks. Great advice. I’m fro USA. Bought a Panerai at Galleries Lafayette in Paris at the same price that it was listed with my US store. Got ~15% VAT back. And did not have to pay the 7% state tax that I would paid in the states. Sooo- a decent deal for me. Again stay healthy. Let’s see if we can get a ride on the Saturn 5 in the background. 😊
Hey Andy, love the channel and your demeanor. Keep up the nice vids! You’ve got a new sub
Really great video, Andy! For a used watch or a new watch from a grey dealer, I think some haggling is expected. But, when it’s a new watch from an AD, this is always a difficult subject. Thanks very much facing it head-on and providing very useful advice.
Another great video Andy. Keep up the fantastic work. Really enjoy your channel, definitely one of my favourites.
This is brilliant. It always felt like negotiating for a lower price with a dealer is like begging. But mechanical watches are more like assets, e.g. real estates and cars; negotiation should always be part of the process
I bought a titanium diver, the largest one, from a manufacturer in Bienne. No names for obvious reasons. List price with a bag of goodies. They were kind enough to ship me the box. Got the VAT back leaving Switzerland and never paid duty anywhere for my new watch. I was pretty pleased with the outcome and comparing with the listed prices in Chrono24 at least it appears that I've done oretty well.
Awesome Saturn 5... Was my grail airfix kit as a kid
Very true on the used market, plenty of room to negotiate there. I recently picked up a 2020 Planet Ocean in mint condition, for under £3500.
New here Andy and I really enjoyed this one. Interesting topic and great to get your advice. Keep up the good work.
I wonder if some of these stores are so elite (or make themselves out to be ) that one would be embarrassed to ask for a discount. I was shopping on Fifth Avenue( NYC) looking at a CQ panorama date (gold). The service was excellent, the attention my wife and I received was incredible and I know speaking for myself I would have been very embarrassed asking for a discount (I know that’s my problem)
@TheEnglishWatch

True, but I imagine their overheads may be a factor also and the amount of footfall. Those stores are great for the experience of trying, but not the best deals. I guess the point is, you shouldn’t feel embarrassed. If you feel you had a premium experience rewarding yourself, it doesn’t get any better.

I hear you. FWIW, my preferred way to introduce the subject is to wait until you have watch in hand (non-verbal cue to seller that you want the watch), ask the price, and then after seller replies, say something like - “ah, ok; not totally out of bounds, but a bit more than I had hoped. Is there any wiggle room here, or is this just what it is?” That will at least let you know whether some discount/any discount is on the table.

Hey! Im also in NYC. The places on 5th absolutely rely on people not asking due to embarrassment to make their money (especially from tourists) but most of them besides the boutiques will absolutely discount if asked. Not as big as some of the more independent ADs but yeah many of these even higher end places will definitely throw you a bone if asked.
Good advice Andy, we all like a discount and I think if you're polite and don't waste the dealers time with unreasonable expectations on sort after watches , then around 10% sounds fair to me. Any more and you've done very well. Good luck with your next purchase, I'm hoping to buy soon myself.

Great info Andy.
I always ask for a discount if I am ready to buy. You have to weigh up the value of a cash discount against any other options. Interest free credit costs the retailer so a cash discount and IFC is a challenge. However, ask for options and see what’s available. I think you can get 8-10% worth of extras. A strap and free service is obtainable with a boutique for sure if you have the cash.
I went into the Omega Boutique in Manchester and was immediately offered circa 10% discount plus goodies on new aqua terra. Sadly, I think it helps if they think you are a genuine purchaser as I was wearing my new white Seamaster at the time, which prompted quite a lot of interest from them on how long I’d had I’d had it and where / how I purchased.

I am a Rolex man but in April 2023 I bought my first Omega, the new 3861 sapphire sandwich with the new clasp and love it. I managed to get 20% off retail at my local AD so I was very happy with that. Don't buy for value retention, buy for how much you like it. Keep up the good work.

Can I ask what country you live in? Canada here, and if I could get 15-20% off MSRP that'd be fantastic.
In my experience paying full retail for an Omega is as bad as paying over retail for a Rolex. I go to the boutique to see an try the watch then I go to the AD to buy it.
Great content. The most sought after brands in life do not need to discount & this protects the brand status longevity. This in my opinion is a positive, purchaser gets brand confidence along with satisfaction that everybody is paying the same price and best value retention/increase. Where this breaks down is when a “relationship” is required where you have to purchase items you don’t want to get what you do want! Changing the subject a watch friend of my has just purchased a Preowned JLC Moonphase Ultra thin, previous model, i think 2012 in Rose gold, JLC serviced and paid below current Steel price, now that’s value! He loves the watch like you do, very elegant. Can I ask does your one have a squeaky sounding movement, his does which I am lead to believe is a characteristic but I think yours may have an updated movement, does it still squeak? Looking forward to you teasing us with what options you are considering as your next to join the EW Collection.
@TheEnglishWatch
Жыл бұрын
My JLC doesn’t squeak, but it does have a metallic like sound when the rotor spins. This I understand is due to the dry ceramic bearings. I guess good old oil would deaden the noise, but need servicing more often and add losses into the system. Efficiency comes with trades offs, but I kind of like the noise. Reminds me there’s something special on my wrist.

I’m getting the feeling people are not happy with the insulting price increases that outstrip inflation massively at the moment while most of us are feeling the pinch. These are luxury items with massive mark ups and big profit margins. They could easily swallow a bit of loss to keep up sales instead of selling less altogether. I also get the impression that sales are massively down. Omega’s price increases are particularly high year on year and even though I’m a fan of Omega they’ve lost my custom. The Tudor price increase was a bad move. They only make a few watches people actually want and most of them are much too thick and they certainly have their share of quality issues. They are now in a price bracket that’s too high for a second tier retro Rolex homage brand when Longines is cheaper and more original with a better selection of models. I’ve often haggled around 10% of most brands. My advice on haggling is try non boutique Ad’s and keep it friendly and polite and always walk away if you think it’s not enough off. You can always come back.
My first and only omega - A speedy professional on a bracelet - i asked for and got a 15% discount with no pushback. Afterwards dealer said he normally gives 10% and won’t go over 15%. Maybe I could have pushed for 20% but 15% seemed comfortable.
I have loved the Speedmaster for a very long time, the moment I put it on wrist I knew it wasn’t for me, it was just a tad to big for my liking.
Great video , thanks

Here’s hoping for a 15%+ discount. I feel like the RRP is steep on these now.
I managed 20% off an Oris about 2 years ago , 18% at the same time on an Omega dress watch that a friend bought at the same time . Nothing off a Tudor GMT about 12 months ago. About 18% off an Omega Seamaster ladies about three months ago . I was offered nothing off at the Omega Boutique so obviously walked away. Nothing off a Rolex Sub 2022 no date a few weeks ago . Called into Breitling boutique about three weeks ago enquiring about about one of the new dive style watches , 36mm on rubber which they had . Asked about discount . Not a penny off , obviously walked away . It’s purely down to the dealers although I believe Omega have tightened up , but most stuff within the Swatch Group has plenty of margin . I always support one dealer now as often as possible if they can supply something I want even if they have to buy it in within trade .
Yet another very interesting video, thank you & I'm going to remember that phrase 'any movement' for next time I'm trying a new watch on 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻

Just to add a datapoint on the opposite side of the pond: Omega: ADs will give anywhere from 10 to 15% for most models. More exclusive pieces you'll get nothing. Tudor: LOL (unless you're talking lower volume pieces like the Glamour line, then you can get some big discounts). Grand Seiko: Used to get insane discounts nearing 25 to 30% but GS has cracked down and threatened to de-authorized ADs that offer discounts. You can still get 5 to 10% on most models but the ADs tend to be very hush hush about it. Coveted models like Shunbun you'll get nothing. Tag, Breitling, IWC, Oris, etc: TBH, youre getting ripped of hard if you *don't* get a decent discount. So many ADs carry them and many ADs around the NYC area will offer a discount on these without even asking unless you come off as a gullible tourist.

In Australia we have an Omega factory boutique (I don't know what the difference is between that and an ad) in the high street, they said there is no discount on any watches. Grey retailers are a bit more flexible (-5%) if you're lucky and the watch isn't too exclusive. There's a lot of wealthy people here so there's less need for dealers to discount to get business.

Had my eye on a IWC Mark XX for a while on bracelet went into AD in October and they wouldn't move on price so thanked them and left. Kept an eye on the website and it was always in stock at the AD and when I walked past it was in the window plus noted another 2 other AD always had them. At the end of Jan I went back to the AD to look at the watch again. List was £5700 I offered £5200 as I believed this was fair. Sales person said they couldn't do this. I held to this price saying I would take the watch there and then for £5200 the assistant went to "call" a senior manager then came back and shook my hand deal done. I think patience and research is key. The mark XX was either not selling or they had a good supply as always in stock so decided a near 10% discount was possible. Currently on the wait list for a pelagos 39 but as it's a hot watch there won't be any discount.

I never ask for a discount. Perhaps that's why I get offered the watches I want from my AD. Horses for courses.
Look, don’t mess about being nice, get three prices and play the dealers off each other and you’ll find the bottom price pretty quick.
brought an omega constellation 41 blue on steel, ladies omega constellation quartz 28 with diamonds and a longines ladies quartz together and basically got the longines for free with a £1.5k discount....equated to about 10% - - from a high street Omega AD
In Singapore, pre Covid and the rolex craze, you literally walk away if there's no discount. The less popular luxury watches still do. E.g. Longines, Tissot AD still do about 15%.
Discounts are out there. I managed to get a Bremont Supermarine with a 42% discount!!! Bought from a high street retailer this January. Oh they even gave a pair of Sennheiser ear buds. Does make you realise just how much of a markup there is as clearly the retailer made a profit
My AD in Sydney gives 18% with no bargaining either way. Even with first purchase there. Got this for an Omega SMP 300 two years ago and got the same discount on a Mido TV this year. Means I will keep going to them for any model they stock as it's such a simple and friendly process.

Who is this AD? I'm from Melbourne. Looking to buy an Aqua Terra.
It looks like most people who would have bought mid tier luxury have moved down market to the sub $500 due to economic concerns. And the top are still buying because market data shows those prices have in fact gone down. Both Patek and Rolex have gone down in price. John P at Delray watches just released a video saying only the Daytona is now trading above retail. Meaning used prices are still above retail, but grey dealers are only buying below.
I used to get up to £1000 of my Rolex’s but now it’s very hard to get discounts now , but My AD was going to give me £2500 of anything in the store if I bought a day date but didn’t bother, I got £700 my daughter’s Constellation and £800 of my other daughter datejust but that was bought 5 yrs ago , didn’t my Panerai at the boutique but they gave me a extra strap and change the straps for XL size ,you used to get great deals on Chrono 24 but they are getting more expensive, I got a Datejust 41 chocolate dial fluted bezel and oyster bracelet in 2017 with extra link for £2500 less than the list price, thanks 👍🏴🙏

Have the watch on your wrist, mention the longest term 0% finance deal they offer online.. Then suggest half that term, coupled with "I don't need the watch winder, what can we agree on to do the deal today?" as you take it off. Then you'll likely get three possibilities offered, Pay up completely for a great deal, Short term 0% with some discount, Shown the door 🤣 If you don't ask, you don't get.. Works for the salesperson too, if they don't ask to help you then they're not in the game to clinch a sale.
