Good advice from you as always. I enjoy the occasional bit of wheeling and dealing and today I bought a watch from Cash Converters, a Hamilton, American Classic, Intra-Matic, H387350. It is mint condition and hardly worn. Only paid £395 GBP. It had been in the shop window since January and I offered £300, too low, so asked him what he paid for it, was £360, I know he has a business to run so made the offer of about 10% over his purchase price, which he accepted. A bargain and I got a very elegant and well made watch with a very nice ETA 2892-2 movement.

In my experience. It can be down to the area (affluence). When I was in the market for a Kermit, every AD in Manchester and surrounding areas such as Wilmslow all said no to any discount. My home town of hull however, gave me a very nice discount. This was during 2006.

I've been fortunate to have a fair AD willing to work with me in Vancouver. Bought a DJ 41 as a retirement gift for my dad and had a 114060 on my wrist within 5 weeks. Canadian retail prices are very competitive too considering currency weakness over the last few years.

I was on the waiting list at a AD for a steel Datejust41 for 10 months, just picked it up 3 weeks ago. Datejusts are just as hard to get as a Steel sports model, no way a discount is possible. In fact the AD laughed his head off when I inquired after 6 months, saying that a 1 year wait is minimum!!

I bought a yachtmaster about 18 months ago from an AD. It was the 40mm steel with platinum dial (can’t recall the model no.) I think at the time it was priced at around £8700 or so. I went to try it on and said I’d think about it for a day or so. I called them and said I would like to buy it but was looking for a deal. I was offered it for £8000. The way the salesman spoke and the way he said £8000 in a slightly raised tone ( like most youngsters do nowadays as if they’re asking a question) made me think I could do even better. I told him I’d see him the next day, and when I went back I played the not totally sure card. I said I’d have it if he could do it for £7800. He agreed so my message is have a go, be pleasant and not cocky and play them at their own game.

Discount, money off, sale, all good sounds to my ear. Tudor AD will tell you they are not allowed to discount and some have company policy to that effect (Harrods) but once a good relationship exists 20% is possible on models such the chrono, alittle less on the GMT. Thanks Paul, I am amazed by the folk that say, you can't ask for discount as the staff may think you rude. I think it is rude not to LOL If you are a little flexible in model choice, then I would be asking 30% upwards on Breitlings and 25% on omega. However, when on promotion or sale I have seen 40-50% on such brands, more on the likes of Tag Heuer, bearing in mind a residual of 30% on some brands (excluding fashion watches which could be as low as 10% if that). When a watch is discontinued it is prime time for a deal so to speak. I recemtly got 50% off a Breitling Chronomat B01 as it was being replaced and had been in stock about 18months. I am going to use it as a daily wearer so residual not so important, but sure I would lose money even at that discount level. Moral is beware of the market place for your chosen watch and do the research. Perhaps look at Paul's previous video on the subject.

Just wanted to add some experience I have had. In Harrods fine watch room, you won't get a discount. They'll instead push their Harrods points card on you. As for Omega, their boutique in Old Bond Street, they weren't willing to budge whatsoever on the price of a Seamaster 300M, not even 5% off (despite prices rising literally that weekend before I visited) - which I thought was quite shocking (instead they were offering a free first service for around £450 as means of my "discount"), so I walked away.

I even said to them that if I got 5% off I’d pay in cash and they said policy was no discounts on any steel models, professional or otherwise. So I basically said that if they weren’t playing ball, I would put it on credit card so they had to pay card fees. So I did.

You don’t necessarily have to say that you can get that watch somewhere else cheaper. Just say to the salesperson that you have seen that watch in the window for awhile now and that you adore the watch but can only spend x amount. But make it a reasonable amount, don’t be stupid with it and if the salesperson doesn’t agree, then leave your name and number for them to allow to think about. It is the same with cars. But make sure you have the money ready otherwise you are going to look just like any other tyre kicker. It makes sense Paul what you are saying about the second hand market. People have been online shopping during the pandemic and second hand watches are easier to purchase online than new watches. I’ve looked online at Australian watch dealers and I’ve noticed too that they have few watches available for sale.

These comments relate to UK only (but much also applies to EU): - I did press hard for discount off a £29k president from a small, independent and refitted boutique. No chance. As I mentioned 18 months ago, we are now fully into the new Rolex “hub & spoke” and “exclusive area” distribution model. No discounts are given, or should I say “allowed”. - Instead, on high value models only, expect free merchandise. If lucky, Watches of Switzerland will give you something decent, recently a £250 Wold watch winder. But less valuable times are available e.g. a pad, a Rolex engraved pen, a Rolex crown brand umbrella, a wallet. etc. Watches of Switzerland also provide a comprehensive 10 Year Warranty. - You gain credit with the dealer and start (or continue) a long term buying relationship with them (rather than Rolex). Remember... ALL WAITING LISTS ARE DEAD. Instead they now examine their books for valued customers who buy regularly, support the brand, and don’t flip - even simply promise not to. People who wear and enjoy the watches, and walk back into the same shop 18 months later with that Steel Daytona on the wrist. - In this new world, not only do you immediately get the warranty card, no name is on written it, just the purchase date. The name is meaningless really, as the watch, it’s registration number etc is all held by the dealer and Rolex on computers. - What happens then is YOUR dealer will source you that steel Batman, Pepsi or Daytona. The call may come out of the blue, no strings attached. Just treat it like a marriage - be faithful. He’ll expect you to buy non sports over time, and you do with no direct expectations. - in the new distribution model, Rolex have followed Car Manufacturer “hub & spoke” processes to the letter. In this order - new contracts, terminate under performers (they become spoke shops of bigger hub dealers), facility upgrades, reduced discounts, new sales standards, and a measurement of “pump in” and “pump out” (measuring sales within their allocated geographical “zone” rather than outside). - the last point is important. It will be tough to start a relationship outside of your zone. There are exceptions e.g. the Canary Islands, where tourism dominates. Everything will be pump out, so here you might get a discount but more likely a bundle agreement. I’ve been offered that twice i.e. buy a £30k Yachtmaster and get a steel Batman. Is all the above accurate, well ...ask Paul. All my predictions on this were posted and came true (including this years releases, sub movement, different sized strap, no Everose Sub, this hub & spoke model etc). He knows as he’s seen my details, watches, previous posts and more. I also got that telephone call for a steel sports and sent him the proof. I’ll be buying some expensive Rolex items soon. I’ll then and soon get a steel Daytona or Pepsi of my choice. But I’ll be buying even more after that. It’s a relationship. £100k plus for sure over time. And before you ask, I have never been on a Rolex waiting list. So how else did I get that steel?

John Scott interesting. Is it true that if you have just been put on a “register of interest” for one of the hot, new Rolex 2020 releases, that by virtue of being on it you will get one eventually? Those that can’t get one, just won’t make the list?

  • @johnscott4693

    @johnscott4693

J C84 Thx for comment. To answer/correct you slightly, No....There is no waiting list. Each dealer has a number of high value steel sports which they now allocate each quarter as I’ve advised. The dealer only looks after regulars, so there’s an “ultra short list of valuable customers” with no deposits required for their requests. What you buy over time (and importantly even historically, ie as of today) is all that matters. If you’ve been on a list for 7 years, not got that Daytona, forget it ... the list is no more. Dead. This will kill the grey market of course. Ferrari operate in exactly the same way. It’s true I mentioned my interest in a certain Steel sports a few months ago, just in passing, when I was in looking for something else of high value. Out of the blue I got a call three weeks ago... literally she said ... “I know you’re interested in this, I know you’re a good customer, I also know you’re looking to by a 31mm Gold Date Just next year for your wife, we are now operating on a new basis to look after regular Rolex customers like you ... I have one for you right now. Let’s start a firmer, long term relationship.” I bought it the next day, no strings. But she knows I’ll be buying the 31mm in gold, and / or more likely, the new yellow gold £30k, 41mm sub. I told her I’d probably buy both as a gesture of goodwill to her. The all new subs are due in 6 weeks she said, and I’ll buy one when it come in, so I’ll be one of the first in the county too. Maybe that’s a favour - a small one at £29,500 !! So she trusts me. Then I buy the Sub. I trust her. She will get me the steel Daytona but I said no real rush; my collection will take time, and I don’t have that much spare cash just lying around. This is my Rolex collection to complete, over time, I’m no flipper. I think it’s a better way overall.

@@johnscott4693 Rolex legally can't forbid them to apply any discount to, they buy and sell watches with a margin. I think that many AD's don't want to damage their margins but they have to sell a minimum of watches too, they need to find the balance. If they continue with some actual policies they only sell a few watches to real customers, the rest will go to grey market.

  • @johnscott4693

Yes. I am (technically was) a commercial Lawyer. It’s defiantly illegal in the EU, not sure elsewhere, but it’s vital to appreciate the unwritten rules of business. For example, EXACTLY the same happened with the first few year or so sales on [BMWs] mini and then VWs First few Beatles. All of these examples are from the same FRANCHISED business model. Nothing was ever said, but anyone that started to discount minis and Beatles stop getting the hot, profitable cars. so...If the Rolex shop begin to regularly discount they will find the supply of hot watches suddenly dry up. Then they miss their sales targets, then they’re terminated. Nothing in writing. But Rolex effectively pull all the strings.

At the lower end the discounts (if any at a boutique) will be smaller. Try 10%

In India currently you’d be lucky to get a 3% discount on any bi-metal DJ. Heck! even a lady dj! Most will say no discount at all and a good AD with some referral or purchase history will give a 3% maximum. Things have changed a lot in the past 2-2.5 years mainly due to social media hype! you could easily get a 12% discount even on a sub 3 years back!

Duty free does not mean you don't have to pay vat. You will have to pay the vat when you enter the eu. In Belgium it is, 21 %. If you ask the best price of a, steal and gold datejust 36 in Spain, you would probably get 15% OFF at an AD. I asked and That was there proposal with out real negotiation

In the UAE AD's (most brands including Rolex [of course not steel sports model]) will tell you the price of the watch and then tell you straight up that there is 10-20% discount without you even asking since they expect people to always ask. One of the large watch Reseller groups here, Rivoli gives up to 30% off one some brands like Rado for example Another thing, the most they will say is, sorry sir/ma'am there's no discount. It won't be the end of the world!

A family friend AD gave my family 40% off so there is plenty of markup and we don't live in a VAT country. He has since died and now if I want an expensive watch I just buy it used. Just like I do with homes, cars, boats and planes.
