How “Moneyball” Changed Baseball FOREVER

Спорт

In this video, Dawson discusses "moneyball", the 2002 Oakland Athletics, and how they changed baseball forever with their 20 game win streak and especially for pending free agents Bryce Harper and Clayton Kershaw. Even with Damon to the Red Sox and Giambi to the Yankees.

    @MAN UTD i agree soccer is the most popular sport. Soccer teams they play around 30+ games on their leagues and a couple games during the cup tournament. So no more than 50 games a year. Baseball teams play 165 games =plenty of chances to fill stadiums, many Tv tranmissions which means millionaire TV/Radio contracts.

    Thanks soo much Dawson for getting this big point across again. Moneyball is also one of my favorite baseball films that I think always show a good message on how to keep your team going and be hip! This new wave of looking at singing players is really working for clubs. Even with this season sucking with everybody on the DL at a certain time, it showed us how teams use valve of certain guys more now instead of just general things like HR or RBIs. The Brewers are kind of like this when they got Yelich and Cain: both fast guys that can only hit for some power but can keep the momentum going! That is why baseball is still getting better and is still the MOST INCREDIBLE SPORT to WATCH! Basketball is just going downhill with guys getting sensitive about where their setting is and players losing money just to get a ring. I do feel really bad for it but it’s true when you can just always sign the big guy to a team. Great video Dawson, you are the Baseball Wizard!

  • @TPiedog

    Not trying to be THAT person that always starts arguements, but baseball attendence is going down, while basketball is going up, heck, the value of the actual team is going up in basketball too. I'm a sixers fan, not a warriors, and a Phillies fan not Yankees. And I can say that even after playing baseball my entire life (only 14), I feel like baseball is becoming more and more boring to me. I know that last part was just my opinion and experiences, but I honestly think basketball is the sport of the future and that football and baseball will be the first of the the four main sports in the United States Of America to lose popularity

    Let's be honest though, It was Mulder, Zito, and Hudson that drove the A's. Yes, they near the top in the A.L in Walks but 8th in Runs, walks are useless if you don't have anyone driving them in and ofensively they were middle of the pack. You can actually compare them to what The Braves did for 14 years, pitching heavy, average to above average offense

  • @CavemanJesus4Life

    @CavemanJesus4Life

    5 жыл бұрын

    Yes but the Braves had Justice, Gant and few others that hit homeruns as well. You didn't need one guy to be the driving force when the whole team was a force that drove them to the World Series for what 5 years. Their Pitching staff was the best at that time.

  • @IwantJenniferConelly

    You're right, they were able to have young pitchers on the roster BEFORE they got paid...It's been the same with all small market franchises in ALL sports. You get what you can until you can't pay them...trade for more prospects...UNTIL all the other sports beside football share revenue...that will have to be the formula. NBA and MLB teams in big markets have a tremendous advantage because of local cable deals.

  • @whyamimrpink78

    @whyamimrpink78

    True. Also, you can put together a competitive team by pulling a bunch of players off of the scrap heap looking at advanced stats, but in a short series you won't win. In a long season you will as depth is important, but in a short series teams are condensed using their best players, especially pitchers, and taking risks (such as stealing bases) to win. Play makers with talent wins in that case. Moneyball is the Martyball of baseball. Good in a long season but bad in the playoffs.

  • @mrmacross

    @mrmacross

    Don't forget Miguel Tejada and Eric Chavez. Those two guys plus the pitchers you named were all drafted by old-fashioned scouts. Yeah, the movie is pretty misleading in that sense. Also, the way the movie presents things, baserunning and defense were not high on Oakland's priorities, and it sure seems like they could've benefited from having better defenders and baserunners on their playoff teams. I think Beane's philosophies of the day (hit homers, draw walks, don't allow homers, don't issue bases on balls) worked on filling out the bottom end of the roster on a restrictive budget, but most title teams have to overpay at some point. The Cubs and Astros built their team around the amateur draft (Moneyball) but also added expensive vets on post-arbitration contracts (not Moneyball), and the Red Sox spend like the Steinbrenner-era Yankees. The 2015 Champion Royals are an exception, and they seemed to have done it by creating a lineup that is completely antithetical to what Billy Beane wanted (but their pitching, especially the bullpen, was what every team valued).

I still thought wait PSH is in this?!?...obviously felt stupid seconds later. But that might be the highest praise I can give an actor. I didn't realize that it was a super famous actor, someone I've studied, he was the character. And in a relatively small screen time but he kills every second he has. In my mind, moneyball helped teams in regular season to get wins. But I don’t think many of those didn’t translate to wins in playoffs.

    With how much teams value the long ball, do you think another moneyball team could emerge in the current mlb if they based the team off of getting on base, putting the ball in play, and fielding?

    This is a great video, but do you have one regarding the current trend (and a dumb one in my opinion) of launch angles, hit velocity, over shifting and what seems to be a refusal to hit for contact in today’s game? I’d like to see a video covering the modern trends

    sandy alderson was really the first to use sabermetrics and beane worked under him and learned the system when walter haas was the owner, the a's werent considered a small market team. it was only after he passed and the haas family sold the team to two grifters that payroll was drastically cut and the team claimed poverty. yes, beane put sabremetrics into high gear, but the team also drafted and developed the best rotation in the al and if sabremetrics is the be all and end all....why did depodesta fail as the dodgers gm? there has to be a balance

    Here's the thing about "getting on base"--it's valuable if the guy who singled or walked can score from first base on a line drive to the outfield gap. If it takes 3 hits per inning to score a guy, that's very difficult to do. In this day and age, where everyone coming out of the bullpen is throwing 98 mph and managers are quick to give the hook to starting pitchers as the line-up turns over for a third time, it's very hard to link hits together in one inning. The game continues to evolve and change and what worked in 2004 is not going to work any more.

    Who is watching this video after The Nationals won the 2019 WS and now just traded away those pieces to sell and rebuild during the 2021 trade deadline. Once I saw that Trea Turner and Max Scherzer were going to the Dodgers, I immediately came here to watch this video.
