Bill Gates even cheated on Steve Jobs by secretly back engineering Macintosh'es OS GUI during 1983-1985. The result was windows 1.0. Steve was madly furious. Bill Gates was no friend of Steve Job, his true personal friends were Larry Ellison, Johnny Ive etc. Steve once said about Bill Gates: ""He'd be a broader guy if he had dropped acid once or gone off to an ashram when he was younger".

Just an FYI on your video so people would know that they tried to license the OS for a little while. We were out selling Apple with our clone, and every once in awhile you can find a Power Computing machine in second hand stores etc...

    The thing is....Apple was never really a competitor for Microsoft. At that time, Microsoft was still mostly a software company while Apple was only making software for its own hardware. Microsoft could easily make software for MacOS and Windows without facing any problem from investors or "fans" (should there be any). Apple on the other hand was built around a brand-name cult. You will not hear the kind of boos in the Apple press conference in a Microsoft one announcing that they are investing in Apple and will be making MacOS version of Office. I don't think Bill Gates ever wanted to crush Apple. I don't think he has problem with Apple making money either. As long as Microsoft made money, it didn't matter to Bill Gates if Apple made money or not. Their products and markets just don't have any overlap.

Gates was very immature until he got old - an obnoxious little shit (Google "Bill Gates Tantrums") who said about Job's "Next" computer "Develop for it? - I'll piss on it!". The idea we'd be using Macs today if it were not for Gates is BS. There was a thriving non-Microsoft non-Apple personal computer industry in the late 70's and early 80's until it was throttled by the IBM-Microsoft partnership. Gates only let Apple survive because he did not want to be accused of monopoly - he got away with it too.

    @Anish Krishna Unfortunately not. These are mostly examples of existing technology which was nicely packaged and then marketed to consumers as if they invented them. Brilliant marketing, but not much innovation. I would say if you look at the iPhone, there might be some innovation there. But that's the exception and not the rule. Even though Apple didn't invent the smartphone, they were innovative in creating the large touchscreen form-factor which is so common today. They moved us away from the Blackberry-like physical keyboard devices which were everywhere in 2006. But I think that's where the innovation ends. Let's start with the Mac. Apple stole the idea for its user interface from Xerox. Besides that, the actual hardware design on the original Mac 128K wasn't innovative. It was very similar to other PC's released at that time. To make matters worse, its hardware was very unreliable. It overheated because Steve Jobs had the "brilliant" idea of refusing to include a fan for cooling. Most of these systems failed because of overheating which damaged different components, such as the main memory. People had to install a third-party cooling fan. The irony is that If you look at the history of the iPod, you will see that Apple didn't invent portable MP3 players. In fact, they didn't even invent the design for the iPod. This design was actually patented by Kane Kramer in 1979.

    Yep! Most people don't know that Apple and Microsoft always worked on projects together. In Apple main building, they had a Microsoft team working on integrated projects. You can see Bill Gates and Steve Jobs talking about this in an interview here on youtube.

    7:57 you forgot about dividends. With dividends it will probably be closer to $100 billion EDIT: So I did the math myself. If he would have kept those shares, adjusted for the splits, Microsoft would have earned $183.38 in dividends per share. Multiply that by the 254,800,000 shares, the total amount in dividends would be $46,725,224,000. Add that to $53.5 billion, which is the stated value of those 254,800,000 shares, will get you $100,225,224,000. For comparison, that's 12.2% of Microsoft's current market capitalization. EDIT 2: for those that will wonder how I got $183.38 in DPS, I found the dividend history on yahoo finance, but here’s the full math ((2.65•3)+(3.05•4)+3.39)•2=46.88 ((.47•3)+(.52•4)+(.57•4)+(.63•4)+(.73•2))•14=136.50 46.88+136.50=183.38

  • @BusinessCasual

    @BusinessCasual

    Not so much forgot, but rather didn't want to do the full math :P But yeah you're right with dividends that number gets at least 15% higher, even without reinvestment. Apple stopped paying dividends in 1995 and resumed them in 2012. So had Gates kept his shares he would've reaped 7 years worth of dividends by now.

Also I know Business Casual is telling a story, but telling it like Apple was saved by MS is BS. Apple’s management led by Steve saved the company. Steve simplified the product line and started making great products again. Losses disappeared and revenues grew and Apple became the most valuable company on earth by following these simple precepts. At best the MS investment may have been a psychological boost at a dark time in Apple’s history. By the way you didn’t clarify that The Mac platform was where Office got its start. Apple had Excel (starting in 1986) and other parts of Office long before Windows even existed.

    When Steve and Bill first started their companies, there was a rivalry going on to a degree. But, it was more like a petty playground argument. Who can do better at what. Then, when Apple was about to go bankrupt and Microsoft was facing antitrust lawsuits, they put their egos away (although I don't think Bill had as much of an ego as Steve) and agreed to work together because it was for the benefit of what they first set out to do back in the 1970s to make sure the PC was able to be brought to the general public. In all honesty, if we lost Apple and Microsoft got broken up, who knows how far back that that would have taken personal computing.

    cool editing idea! splitting image portions into different layers so you can change the blur of each element (like 2 people talkting) while slowly zooming out of the whole composition. you were just too lazy to cut out between the people's feet on the left at 0:11 :P no, but this is a really cool effect and i like it

    The common PC during 80's was invented by IBM. IBM PCs during 80's and 90's weren't cheaper than Apple computers. Both IBM and Apple were producing computers of great quality during 80's and 90's. However the BIOS chips of the IBM motherboards were effectively reverse engineered during mid 80's. That permitted the construction of very cheap IBM compatible motherboards from cheap Asian manufacturers. Also cheaper CPUs compatible with Intel appeared from AMD and later Cyrix. That allowed the wide spread assembly of cheap IBM compatible computers with MS DOS and later MS Windows by thousands of small companies. These computers were good enough and affordable by nearly all home users. The IBM PC compatibility was not ideal but that didn't matter and Microsoft DOS and windows was trying to be compatible with every PC compatible computer. This phenomenon made Microsoft and Intel very rich but also damaged Apple and IBM. Apple after the comeback of Jobs wasn't successful to be a major player in the computer market. Apple computers are not more than 10% of all computers in USA (it has a greater percentage in the education market) and no more than 2-3% globally in computer market. That's why Jobs was focused more on iPod and later iPhone. For a long period 50% of Apple revenues came from iPods and iTunes music. Now 80% of Apple revenues come from iPhones iPads and iOS apps.

    referral madness IBM PC from the beginning was more open than Apple computers. Apple even today prefers to create its own ecosystem which isn't compatible with many other third party electronics. IBM before 80s used to create its computers with proprietary components that were made by IBM. So IBM had total control of the reliability and performance. The elevated cost wasn't very important because its customers were big businesses. However IBM PC was intended to ordinary home users and small businesses. So nearly anything was bought by external sources like hard disks, floppy disk drives, monitors, the DOS from Microsoft, etc in order to low the production cost. That made they effort to clone the IBM PC easier and cheaper. Only the BIOS was really made by IBM. But also this with reverse engineering was copied by Compaq. IBM sued Compaq but Compaq wasn't convicted because he made something similar but not the same. With Apple things were difficult for cloning its computers. Apple was creating its own floppy disk drives, monitors, keyboards, data ports, and above all its own complex operating system which couldn't be easily copied or imitated like the much simpler BIOS. Also Microsoft was very friendly with IBM clones. Microsoft could honor the choice and trust of a huge computer company like IBM. Contrary to that Microsoft back stabbed IBM by selling its operating system DOS and later windows to manufacturers of IBM Clone Computers. Microsoft eventually became richer than IBM.

    Achilleas Labrou wrote :- "Microsoft DOS and windows was trying to be compatible with every PC compatible computer". That's not how it works. It's the opposite - every PC and other hardware maker (except Apple of course) tried to make their computer compatible with DOS/Windows - they would not have sold any otherwise. With a monopoly, MS could lean back and let the hardware makers do the grunt work of compatibility.

    Duke Nukem What you mentioned is true too. That problem continues today. Improper drivers or BIOS is a huge problem. That's one of the reasons I prefer Apple computers. The operating system and hardware work seamlessly. With the exception of the recent Microsoft laptop hundreds or even thousands manufacturers try to be compatible to an operating system and the reverse. It is unavoidably chaotic. Of course prestigious manufacturers of computers are more efficient. But Apple has the advantage.

    IBM doesn't give a damn about what the rabble is buying, they make stuff for rockets/nasa and planes, they don't target consumer manufacturer. Yeah in the early days of hardware they were in the game but they developed into other technology areas.

    Thanks for the great video I learned a lot about Apple. I still believe that Apple has a great simple computer to use but am sticking to Windows because I can just about anywhere and get a program that I want instead of having to go online. The only Apple stores that I know of are 50+ miles from me. Warren

    Apple's problem was bad management and lack of enterprise and was not to do with refusal to license their operating system to other companies. They actually did this during this period and it was a disaster. Even today, Apple does not license it's operating system to other manufacturers in any of its products.
