I wore a cloak to school every winter since I was 8, and everyone laughed because I kept my pack under it, so they'd call me hunchback. This ended one winter when a teacher slammed a door and a mass of snow fell on the place where the students were lined up for class. I was the only one in that line who wasn't shivering and wet. I had the last laugh.

But, I live in SoCal so investing in either one of those would be a big waste of money since it never gets cold enough out here for that kind of winter wear, except for when you're up in the mountains.

More than so much pressure, the clasp detaches and you leave the cape behind. If it slips off because someone was standing on it or something stupid, it's not broken so you can just pick it up and put it back on, but if it gets caught in a jet engine the hero flies off perfectly safe while the cloak gets shredded, and then the hero pulls out a spare cape.

A raised hood is going to serve as a boon since the assassin is less identifiable AND makes others to think that their peripheral vision is obstructed, giving them an edge for counters from angles their enemies think they cannot see from. In regards to removing the cloak: keep in mind that once adrenaline starts flowing fine motor movement is the first think to go. How about actually integrating both items? Instead of making a small slit in the cloak to thread the belt through, make a long slit on the back and sew the cloak to the back scabbard - or just sew the back scabbard on top of the cloak. This way there would be no gap that rain and wind could get through. With the back scabbard in a fixed position relative to cloak and hood it would also take less training to reach the point where you're proficient enough with the gear to never get caught in the fabric while drawing.

Hey Shad! Here in Austrian Alps, cloaks are still part of the traditional mountainwear. I wear one every day to walk my dog when the weather's bad outside. They are traditionally made out of a very, very dense and heavy woolcloth that you won't really find anywhere else than here, which is still being produced by the same families of manufacturers as in the 1400s. It does give you good protection against wind, and it keeps you dry in the pouring rain for hours on end, but i have to say: since it doesn't fit tightly to the body (such as something with sleeves would), cloaks don't give you a lot of warmth while walking, as cold air can get in from below easily, so it's actually best to wear them on top of a warming jacket. Now, if you sit around for a long time outside, the story is different, they actually warm you a lot then, as they are basically a big blanket, which is why they are still very popular for hunters here. Honestly, I wouldnt really go for a cloak if it's below freezing, but when it's wet and windy and chilly outside, cloaks are actually useful if they are made out of the right material. Yours looks like it's made of cotton, I don't know if that would do a very good job at protecting you :p

Nothing with fantasy about it, maybe you projected something you heard elsewhere onto my comment? You should make it a habit of reading and listerning carefully before replying emotionally. Cheers.

I was very strong before and could carry the weight of my longer swords almost as well as you, of course without the same finesse and skill as you. I await the day that I can be back in full swing on tatami mats. In the interim I just have to pretend im darth vader in a rigid suit of armor. Cloak hoods are oversized because they are meant to be rolled back like you would roll up your sleeves, clothing had to be made more one size fits most back then, by rolling it, makes it tighter, less prone to blowing off, keeps it out of your vision and keeps you warmer. Kinda surprised you didn't know that.

Hey. I was thinking about that custom back scabbard of yours and realized something. 1) You could make that flat guide piece smaller, and be on both front and back of one side of the scabbard. That would make up for the smaller guide profile, as you would have two guides on the same side to assist the return of the sword, and 2) You could make a scabbard that allows for a back draw like that that has one side open, but with another, an inner piece inside the scabbard. Said piece would have a metal stud in it that would act as a kind of sliding door/panel to allow the sword to move in and out of that exposed edge of the scabbard so that you could control when the scabbard is open and thus when the sword is exposed. The pin itself would sit in a groove in such a way that secures it and the panel from undesirable movement when the panel is either fully open or fully closed. The pin could also be designed to be accessed from the bottom of the scabbard or top, for potentially one-handed operation. For THAT end, you might need to make the pin into something bigger, like a lever. Really, there are a number of different mechanical inventions and techniques one could invent to make drawing from the scabbard easier or possible with one hand. The same applies to swords mounted at the waist. One could even lie the scabbard and the sliding panel with a ball bearing and groove system (along with slots at the top and bottom of the scabbard) that keeps the panel in place and prevents it from sliding around in the scabbard.

You say how "we're answering the important questions here" and I must say I have to agree XD I've really been wanting to sew a cloak so it was nice to hear the pros and cons and how it compares to a cape. Also I am SO GLAD that you can put a sword on your back while wearing a cloak, it was something I had been wondering for character designs and stuff, also it was helpful to see how you kept the sword in place by looping the belt that goes across the chest with the lower one, I had done a test to see how that could work and I couldn't figure it out so thank you
