How Medical Cannabis Works to Help Parkinson's Disease Patients

UPDATE AUG 2021: With the rise in popularity and interest in medical cannabis and CBD, Modern Aging is partnering with Dr. Chin and launching a new course - The Essential Guide to Cannabis and CBD for Women's Health this fall! If you are interested in finding out more, email us at hello@thisismodernaging.com.
Medical Cannabis is legal in 33 states now despite having a 94% national support rating. Medical marijuana has helped thousands with cancer, Parkinsons, epilepsy, chronic pain, neurological disorders and so many other illnesses to be able to obtain a quality of life that was not reachable through “traditional, mainstream” treatment. Medical cannabis is also known to help people with depression, anxiety, mood disorders, lack of sleep. We decided to take my mom who has Parkinson’s Disease to see a cannabis doctor, Dr. Junella Chin, and see if CBD oil could provide some comfort for her. We documented the appointment so you can learn some of the benefits of CBD oil as it is used to treat Parkinsons patients. Check it out!

Hi there I’ve had many patients with Parkinson’s and other autoimmune diseases get relief from pain and inflammation from CBD hemp. You don’t need to go to a dispensary, or smoke pot. CBD hemp is online. In fact it’s extremely important in light of Covid-19 you not take Advil or ibuprofen as those two drugs have been linked to an increase in inflammation and New reports from physicians on the front lines tell us those COVID-19 patients who took Advil or ibuprofen exacerbated greatly there condition. CBD is an excellent anti-inflammatory excellent for pain relief, excellent for the liver and it is natural as long as it is produced ethically. Ever heard of - Piyaliyah Prominent Prepotence - (should be on google have a look ) ? It is a good exclusive product for discovering how to reverse Parkinsons disease minus the normal expense. Ive heard some super things about it and my cousin got amazing success with it.

Dr. Chin is wonderful. It takes such courage to devote your medical practice/life to something that for many people is taboo. Her compassion is as vast as her bravery. Doctors who embrace alternative therapies are, in my experience, rare. But when the people in the vanguard--folks like Dr. Chin--lead the way with such compassion, it makes it easier for more practitioners to follow. Great video of a great person--great people.

Thank you for sharing this wonderful video! I am Parkinson's patient, I've been diagnosed for PD for about 2 years now. I have great success with medical cannabis in regards to treatment of pain, depression, anxiety, tremors and most of all the rigidity which I feel on a daily basis. I believe in this natural therapy enough to assist Parkinson's support group gatherings in Michigan by presenting education of how it helps with PD and also reveal the truth of how wrong it is to make laws and control a plant that's been used for thousands of years by mankind.

@@shireen_w well it depends what symptoms you want to treat for your mom. With Parkinson's disease affects, we all get varieties of symptoms. As far as balance I wouldn't put so much faith in medical cannabis..however if you are one of the mobile PD peeps and balance isnt hindering your mobility too much. A sativa strain is worth checking out. I do rock steady boxing , my balance still isnt too great but since I've joined boxing my mobility, balance and the increase of dopamine from our session pays off accompanied with cannabis on as needed basis I have seen feeling a bit better. I feel if want to focus on exercise & mobility that's my goto. Sativa has a general effect of, energizing, happiness creativity. What I use for issues with pain, stiffness like a tied knot muscle feeling, or for wanting to chill and sleep because sometimes PD peeps have trouble sleeping as well. Indica strains is what I use. It gets a nick name of being the couch lock bud because some cannibus of the indica strain is strong enough to make one get sleepy and tired but does wonders on pain fasho!! Goto leafly.com.(its like a compendium for people who are serious about utilizing cannibus for medical purposes) I research info on cannibus at that site along with other ones. How much I take it depends how my regular meds like levodopa is affecting my symptoms. I don't use prescription pain meds either last thing I need is more side affects to deal with. If you are in the Detroit, Michigan area I sometimes have presentations on this subject in relation to PD. but since I'm in a blue state I cant even sit in a restaurant nor go to my exercise group because this overuse of covid lockdowns. Any questions hit me up here. Hope that helps 🥰 be safe and God bless you and your mum.

It took a while to get her to want to try it. Dr. Chin is amazing and really laid everything out for us in an understandable way and that helped a lot. For many people, it's education of what medical cannabis actually does to help heal the body and then they realize that it is not the 'marijuana' that they think it is. So hoping that videos like this will bring more awareness to help others. We, as a nation (and a world in fact), have a terrible addiction to pharmaceuticals and we need to find other ways to help heal.

I work with the elderly, so I know how debilitating parkinsons can become, in regards to the persons quality of life, so I would love to know whether Mum was able to paint again. Dr Chin seemed very lovely and informative, however I personally think she should have included Mum in the conversation a bit more, by asking her questions directly, and then letting you both elaborate more on her answer to bring clarifcation. All the best to you, with lots of love from New-Zealand

It would be great if the pharmacists and doctors had the same program of standards with pharmaceuticals. Many pharmaceuticals make patients dizzy and are lethal, yet there is no program like in cannabis to track a patient’s pharmaceuticals. Let’s lobby for the same cannabis standards to be applied to pharmaceuticals. There has never been a significant adverse event (or death!) with cannabis, unfortunately the pharmaceutical industry can not compare.

I have what appears to be a generalized dystonia or some form of functional neuropathy. My symptoms are characterized by involuntary muscle spasms in my upper torso and limbs which also radiates into my neck, jaw, and lower limbs as well. In my extensive experience with medical cannabis and my 'condition', I have found that THC, especially strong doses, can markedly exacerbate my symptoms. CBD, the second category of cannabinoids, can be quite helpful regarding my muscle contractions and likely provides neuroprotective benefits as well. Movement disorders suck, plain and simple, and in my experience as a patient, the majority of medical providers are grossly ignorant regarding our individual experiences, and tend to be more problematic than helpful. A well educated and experienced neurologist is critical, though exceptionally rare. Four out of five neurologists I have seen were genuinely incompetent in understanding my condition, let alone providing meaningful treatment.

If purchased through a medical cannabis pharmacy then you can buy varieties with THC in it. If you buy it online, it is usually hemp oil which only has CBD. She was using a combination of medical cannabis with and without THC...the THC really helped to relax her...great for better sleep. disa.com/map-of-marijuana-legality-by-state this gives you a better sense of what is legal in which states.

It's not necessarily the 'best' one because each person reacts to medical cannabis differently. If you go do a dispensary, all the offerings should already be third party tested so that is most important. Go low and slow in terms of dosage and see how she does. We went to Med Men which is in New York (and a few other states). Your mom may or may not react to THC well depending on her health and her ailment...or sometimes it really helps to provide relief. Talk to the budtender at the dispensary as they may be able to give you good advice.
