Collecting is a hobby.yes we only wear one watch at a time but the ability to swap around and feel a different piece on the wrist on different occasions is part of the enjoyment. How many,what type or theme or brand or style is up to you. Fulfil your need.

You "need" three. One Dress watch, One everyday/Work Watch and one beater watch. Last one preferably a Diver :)

A completely separate note to the topic of this video, when you spoke of your Dad and his watch, you reminded me of when I was young, probably around 1973. I was in a bus station with my Dad when he taught me to read a 24 hour clock as part of reading the bus timetable. Thank you for triggering that very special memory 😁👍🏻🙏

I sold my collection when I realised that I had become a flipper. I bought one watch instead and Ive worn it close to a year every day now. I appreciate this watch more than I ever did with much more expensive pieces in my collection. Just to tickle the hobby a bit Im thinking about establishing a one watch per year rule. I intend to add a Patek as a dresswatch next year for my birthday. Im really happy I made learning the center of the hobby and not buying anymore

Very good approach to have. I too and a one watch per year person for the most part.

The secret I discovered of minimising my collection was to get a nice watch display box with only 6 slots. Then I discovered they come in a 12 slot option.. and to top it all they stack really nicely as well..still looking for the answer to life the universe and everything.. such as how many watches to have in your collection..of course it’s 42.. ( for now)

I agree infact a watch can be used to mark a special event like success or some personal special event so you can associate the watch with that event as a symbol of that special time

Steve Jukic My dad’s Raketa which he wore daily from 1985 until 2005 still works great today and has its original acrylic. My dad was an accountant so that probably helped a bit but it is still impressive. Same with a Seiko in my family which was never serviced and still works (though it’s over a minute fast per day), and it was worn daily from 1976 until somewhere in the 90’s, then worn occasionally until these days, my wife still wears it at least once in a month or two. I pretty much doubt reliability is something only some brands have, but more that it’s something common for jeweled mechanical watches.

Bought my first Tag Heuer at 21, went on to buy another 12 before getting by first Rolex at around 24 which I still own amongst my collection.

My dad was a one watch guy. After he passed I went through his stuff and found that he would spend about a week's salary on a watch and keep it (and get it serviced) for many years. I think a week's salary is quite a bit more than most folks spend on a watch so that tells me that he wasn't necessarily a watch enthusiast but he did value a nice piece. I have spent as much as a month's income on a piece and once two week's income but mostly less than a week's. I currently have 8 watches.

Great video, I really enjoyed it. My father had a mid 1980s Casio G-shock Square for years, I believe a DW-5300. It was his only watch. He wore it for years even after the resin broke off the steel case. He eventually lost it. He noe has the closet g-shock to it, the DW-5600-IE. You really don’t need a watch anymore. However, for me personally, it would be very inconvenient not to have one. I like to always know what time it is, regardless of what I’m doing. I would find using a smartphone as a watch do be a pain, while a wristwatch is always right there. I have a G-Shock DW-5600-Ie as my workwatch/beater, can take almost anything and is replaceable if needed for under $50. I have too many watches, but I know I don’t need them, I wanted to have them because I made the decision to get them. I would agree that we come up with reasons to purchase items (not just watches) to justify the cost.

Beautifully presented conundrum! My watches are linked to my memories in a very clear way. My first watch aged 8 was from my father, a small black-faced mechanical Citizen watch. I saw the whole world in that watch and can pinpoint the moment when I was hooked. My Father owned a Seiko Bellmatic and later when better off wore a Rolex Sub. The passion was fuelled for life and the memories, alongside my many cars motorbikes and acoustic guitars, in the intervening 50 years have all clearly been points of time and emotion in my life. So, objects are wonderful signposts for the memory, to me anyway. Your point about want or need! Bang on! I used to own some twenty-five watches. I have weaned myself off. I now own A Rolex, A Farer GMT, An Invicta Pro Diver, a G shock. Finally, the Citizen Diver you recently reviewed. I have had mine for five years, my go-to off work watch. Really lovely subject, beautifully presented. Thank you.

Great video Fish. Best ever! I can relate to every moment you mentioned. However, I love to own watches and I'm now only concentrated on higher end luxury pieces. I recently purchased a Perrelet seacraft and love it.

I think for me, the most minimal i can do is 3. The first: a watch I that is a fit for my job (my "working" watch - if I was a one watch person, this would be the watch probably). The second: a watch that fits whatever i like to do on my free time ("weekend" watch). The third: a free pass. just somethin i like even if it doesnt serve a particular function (the "because im a watch enthusiast" watch 😂)

I really liked this video. I'm thinking of uploading a similar video detailing my perspective on watch collecting. In short, there is no finite number, as part of the joy is in finding that next watch.

Part of this hobby is also experience base. The research, shopping and the searching are experience that can end up with a watch. And the enjoyable by product of the hobby of 'anticipation' when you await the purchase or arrival.

The last few seasons haven’t been the greatest, but I still love it and miss it. Luckily reruns are on like all day everyday haha.

This was really great. You hear the "buy experiences not things" angle all the time, but it's nice to hear the opposite perspective for a change, that it's also OK to build memories around hobbies that you are passionate about. I am in your camp, where I generally find traveling for vacations to be more stressful than relaxing, and once the vacation is over, it's over. Conversely, a well-made, functional, or beautiful object can potentially last a lifetime and brighten your day on a regular basis. Watches in particular are kind of unique as a hobby item in that they can be both a collectible, material good and a sort of "totem" that triggers memories of experiences that happened while you were wearing the watch.

Huh. I sort of run my collection in cycles. I pull out a dozen watches, wear them, switching between them, wearing 2 or 3 different ones in a day, and then I pull out a different dozen from the safe after 5-10 weeks, put the first dozen back in the empty spaces in the watch cases, lather, rinse, repeat. I think I've got 4-5 dozen. Some just don't get worn at all, but they get taken out as choices or to hold or to remember when I got them. They're still appreciated, and I wouldn't get rid of them. Then I have a box of cheap craptastic watches that I don't count in the collection, and they're just things I got on a whim and I can treat like dirt and don't care if I break or scratch up or get muddy or greasy -- the disposables (not purchased that way -- they "graduated"). I've never sold a watch. I still have every single watch I've ever had since I was a kid. When you're in your 50s and you like watches, a collection just sort of happens. I am not a collector, yet I have a collection.

If you “need” a watch chances are it should probably be either a tool watch like a G-Shock/Casio or a dive watch, just because these watches can take multiple years of wear.

The g-shock is so ugly and endearing. Unparalled accuracy, reliability, and ruggedness. You can wear it anywhere. No one will ever mug you for it. And it is an excellent gold digger repellant. This, a smelly old dog, and a 1962 ford pickup truck... That's all any red blooded Merikan man needs.

Just a fantastic video Guy! There is almost a classic "60 Minutes" journalism quality to it. I love it! I have gone through close to 400 watches in the last 9 years. Mostly vintage watches. But it's interesting that a $60 vintage watch off ebay has trumped a $3K Rolex for enjoyment. I now have about 25 watches in my collection. A year ago, I downsized to about 8 watches, but slowly it has grown. I love watches, what can I say?

You are right about material objects evoking memories like scent can. My memory kinda sucks I dont even remember which islands I visited on my last vacation. But I do remember all the watches I tried on ( but didnt buy lol)

I think there's a channel called "Just One More Watch" :) I hv a small watch collection but there's this one watch that i consider as mainstay because it fits my EDC and prepping lifestyle...

Interesting presentation. Specifically your retort about spending your money on a vacation, or some other experience that will create memories. I think there is something to this. I know people who, for example, go on cruises. Past a certain threshold, the cruises will blend into one another. And, as you say, sometimes the thing that will connect you to the memory is a thing, like a watch, either that you bought, or that was on your wrist on a certain date. BTW, that sort of thing only works if you have a watch of good enough quality to still be worth owning 5, 10, or 15 years on.

Buy only what you truly love, it's pointless to have a big collection with watches that you never wear, I think 5 versatile watches are more than enough, daily beater, special occasion watch,sports model,dress watch etc. The journey of building a perfect 5 pieces collection is more exciting than owning 20 watches that you like but not really love.

I have 2. Dress and allrounder..... Do i need to spend 300$ on g shock eavenn if i do not wear it so much or haveing just for colection? I had 13 and i love watches. Why do you need chronograph in colection, tnx for answers. I hope you wil answer.

I'm new to watches. Got into it this year. Like 3 months ago. I have 3 now. tag heuer carrera, grand seiko snowflake, zenith defy classic 41. Looking at a moonwatch and cartier santos now. Not really into rolex. Too common

Which purchases are most satisfying is a great question. I really need a new lawnmower ($275), a new fence ($1200), etc... but I would much rather purchase a Seiko Alpinist or SARB033, or a Tudor BB58 or an Omega Speedmaster. I probably should spend my money the other stuff, sadly. Not as fun! But it would have its own satisfaction.

In the space of 2 months, i reluctantly scaled back to 1 (breitling aerospace) from 7 (vintage king seikos, sarbs etc) 4 months on... im getting itchy trigger finger on the ebay. But my BA does everything i need in a watch and more.

I purchased two watch boxes that can hold 12 watches each and spent several years filling them. I now have what I consider the perfect collection that works for me. 24 watches that includes 6 vintage pieces.

Nice, so no new watches in your future?

I have 4 : a work/sports and dive watch (a nato strapped, easy to read analog beater) ; a daily and travel watch (a nato strapped polished chronograph that could double as a casual chique watch) ; a dress watch (a leather strapped analog watch that, ironically, is the cheapest but I keep it looking pristine and its large face attracts attention) and finally a tactical watch (digital blacked out with a composite shackle strap)

I would make a distinction between "serious" watch collecting (where the watches are more or less collected for the sake of collecting) and adding more watches for specific use cases. The simplest example would be a 3 piece "dress watch - sports/allround watch - beater watch" "collection". Then of course, one would want additional watches to match one's wardrobe, or certain complications like a second time zone or all the functions Casio watches come with. I would argue that it is not necessarily watch collecting as long as watches are bought for specific use cases.

If I cut my collection down it would be 4, Seiko 5(first watch nostalgia), Casio dw5600(wanted one since 1985 use it as a beater), Hamilton khaki(my first Swiss), OP 36mm(last watch)

This is a good talk about buying psychology. Transcends through different products. There isn’t a number answer. I have created new categories to buy things such as knives or watches or flashlights. On traveling. It’s the most expensive hobby I have. I think who you spend your time with makes the most important memories. Balance of anything is the usually the correct answer for all things.

In my opinion, must have a dress watch, a tool watch (field or diver - whichever you prefer) and also a beater for action sports, manual work like a g-shock or something. So 3 is enough, if you're talking about a minimum collection. If your on a budget you could buy something like a Hamilton Khaki King for example that could work as a dress and tool watch. And that leaves you with just the beater to buy, which you are ok throwing around. Also, as long as you have interchangeable straps (NATO's, bracelets, leather) you can easily get past with a couple watches.

Very wise reflections indeed! Nowadays with smartphones and all many people don’t think they need even a single watch at all. So they don’t! Other people think they need (-as in “want”) a huge collection. So they do! Nothing wrong with either of those standpoints. What is a wrong thing is to think that you can tell others what is right based on your personal point of view. Freedom rules - YEAH! I’ve always been a rather materialistic person myself. Not thereby said that I haven’t been doing other things bringing me great movements of joy, like traveling and so on. (Well, even playing with my kids😂). But the joy of things has always been there. In my early youth it was cars, later HIFI equipment - and now watches. Sounds like a kind of superficial person, I know. But these are hobbies that has lasted 10 - 15 years each. Think I’ve ended up in the watch hobby because there’s a more long lasting and even historical perspective to it. In that respect you learn about your more materialisticly based hobbies, I think. There’s a kind of intellectual process to it also in that respect...

Ironically, 'want' used to mean 'lack'. While it is still sometimes used that way today, we usually use it to mean 'desire'.

Collecting can become hoarding. Have too many things can cause undue anxiety.

While most wear a watch as a fashion accessory, I wear a watch as a tool that I use everyday. I do have some requirements that must be included. 1. The form factor must be that of a field watch. 2. Must have a black or dark blue dial with white numerals or markers. 3. No complications except for the day of the month. 3. Must be antimagnetic. 4. Lug to luv width must be 22mm or greater. 5. Must be a quartz. 6. Hands must be white and big. 7. Must have bright lume that lasts. 8. Must have the ability to swap out the stock band for a strap or bracelet. 9. Beefy crown. I can glance at my watch and get the time far quicker than someone pulling out their phone and looking at the time. Plus, in certain situations it's rude to look at your phone and with a watch, it's much more acceptable in social interactions. As a rule, I leave my phone at home or in the car when in a social situation.

you only live once, this is wrong I live everyday I will only Die once. for twenty years I only had my Seiko SKX 173. Right now I am wearing my Rolex Milgauss 116400 40 mm steel rolex. this is becoming my king of watches

You may want to rewatch that episode of TBBT. Sheldon was experiencing shame on his inability to let go of any possessions. Amy was the only person that he let see his storage locker. Relating that to collecting (watches, guitars, lenses, comic books ...), if a person feels a sense of shame about their behavior, they probably need to evaluate what they are doing. I have several collections that most people would question due to their composition (e.g. slide rules, mechanical calculators) or quantity (e.g. watches, Nikon cameras & lenses), but they take up very little space and have a minuscule effect on my financial well-being. If a collection is not causing stress in your life, it is probably OK. It just may be something to deal with for the executor of your estate. In my great uncle’s house, my father found a shoebox labeled “Pieces of string too short to use for anything.”

Somewhere between $500-$1000.

I think most Rolexes could be a 1 watch collection. For what I want, it would be 3-4 watch collection. A g shock (beater), reverso(smart/dress), speedy (weekend) and Sub or explorer (daily). Any one of those could be dropped out for a 3 watch collection.

i have 13 amd 2 works, 1 was gifted to my sister but now i will buy 1 more when i graduate collage it will be g shock mtg 1000 b) i have my nautica 100 $ daily watch and 1 chrono wich i got from my grandma it is my current rotation. when i buy g shock i will weare it every day to payoff my purchas, itf will alsoo be the end of my colectiom or not we will see, the point is if you buy expensive weare it to pay it off.

Please see if you can occasionally make your original long form content! I used to enjoy those.

Ok I'll try and do that on some future videos.

Thing is .... is more better OR less better, to me if I see a watch which is in my budget than I will definitely buy it as it will possibly be automatic so it will last a long time especially in my watch winders. So that’s just me! 👍🏻

Colt Python .357 6 shot revolver. It was my fathers service sidearm throughout the course of his career as a law enforcement officer.

I've never regretted any of my watch purchases, not consciously anyway.

I don't see myself as a collector, even though I currently own 16 watches. None of them are actually horological significant. I consider myself as a watch enthusiast, just someone who loves wearing different watches. I'm not really systematically hunting a particular watch, nor am I looking for something that will retain or increase in value. I buy a watch on a whim, if I like how it looks, the price is fair for the specs, and if I can afford it or if there's no other things I'd like to spend my money on. I'm also enthusiastic about food, I'm more systematic choosing a new place to eat on my days off than how I buy a watch, I could've probably saved up for a very nice luxury watch if I saved all my money on eating out for two years, but I'll be less happy. I don't need another watch, in fact, I survived wearing a $30 watch for years, but I do want more. I say put your disposable money to where you're most happy, and enjoy it. :)

One. U need only one. Rolex Submariner. That's it, just one. Any model Subby will do. But only 1 is required. Nothing else needed. Just add water. Shake and stir. 👍

11 at this moment but my goal is 5 Diver, dressy, chrono, GMT and moonphase

I want 3 watch only. But my mind says need 4 watch (dress, chronograph- sport, beater, & casual)

I’ve always needed only another one.

none... Still own 12 simply because i want them lol.

You only need one watch Rolex explorer ,but where’s the fun in one watch?

If I was sensible I would have a Nomos for work and a G-shock for everything else.
