How many hairs can one watch contain?!
Ойын-сауық
Today we have another drawer warrior on the bench, a late 1940's triple calendar moon phase from the not very well known brand Pierce. Join me for a full service of this old watch, with a running count of hairs found in the movement and a couple of very strange surprises!
As always we'll have a couple of detours which are only randomly connected to watchmaking, including a discussion of Neymar junior :)

A million thanks from someone who is totally inept at any kind of mechanics for your crystal clear explanations of each part's function. Your humour, eloquence and clarity of expression combine to make your videos a total joy to watch (!).

Made me smile to hear the children in the background. Reminds me of mine when they were small.
I love these little springs: So many hours spent on four feet on the floor searching them or searching in that parts which spring could be adapted to replace the lost one.😬

@@havana4648 I knew this one would come! It is just a literal translation of a German saying "auf allen Vieren (or vier Füssen)", more or less. Maybe " on all fours" would have been better, but I don't really know if that is English.

That day date moonphase module looks like a really simple and effective solution to add to the basic movement. I hope the great minds that created this weren't lost to the watch world when the company closed. Mind you they could have set up a barber shop. Thanks for another educational and funny vid Stian.

Nice of you that you didn't edit your kids out! I immensely enjoy watching you work.
Triple calendar moonphase is one of the coolest complication for me, clearly underapreciated
A beautiful watch in its day, and it still is beautiful by today's standard. "Thanks" for sharing, stay and safe.
To my eye, a rather nice looking watch. I particularly like the way they did the date complication. Another awesome video!!!
My favorite part of all your videos is when fire up the balance wheel after cleaning... so satisfying.
The dad jokes get me every time…😂
Love the smiling moon. Very nice dial with very little decay.
I like this watch. I think that you made the servicing look easier than it really is. There are a lot of interacting parts. Interesting history too. I was thinking that the hairs were arm hairs pulled in through the winding stem, I must shave my arm before I wear my watch in future.😁

I really like the single spring for two correctors in the competitions. I think it was a very elegant conservation on materials and space. The brand has a very nice simple design.
Such a lovely looking watch and a nice piece of history. Thanks for letting it shine Stian👍
Another amazing and informative restoration and service, with a little comedy act! Love your work.
Another great video Stian, I love the history lesson and learning about lesser known marques

This was a fascinating video, Stian, especially how you explained the relationships between the wheels in the triple complication. The engineering ingenuity in finding the simplest ways to achieve complex functions is remarkable. It is one of the fundamental qualities of vintage watchmaking. Btw, do you deduct from your assistant's wages the price of the pilfered ice cream sandwiches?
@VintageWatchServices
Жыл бұрын
Thanks Bullnose! You're spot on that finding the simplest solution to complex problems is the essence of good watchmaking. And yes, it's basically a zero sum game. The scarcely paid child labor I encourage is balanced by them buying stuff with their earned money that I would otherwise have given them for free 😁
I was left this watch by my grandfather when he passed and it takes pride of place in my collection. Wish I knew of someone I could trust to service and clean it.

quite affordable is the answer - first one I looked at was the WW2 RAF chronometer - I had never heard of Pierce before this video
Looking for missing springs sounds like fun. Not that I wouldn't know... What a nice dial, too bad it was hiding behind a privacy glass! I used to lose lots of small stones but I invested in black rubber mat tiles around my cabbing and faceting machines, stress levels dropped as soon as I installed them. 😅
I'm happy to have seen this video. I didn't feel that I could handle servicing a triple calendar moon phase movement, but now I think I can tackle one. Chronographs, not yet...

Thank you for a gorgeous video on a very beautiful watch. Just watched a video by Nekkid Watchmaker on an another totally unknown brand - Roamer Stingray?! - and am flabbergasted by the quality and looks of some of these unknown brands. Your rather old Pierce watch is just great, works well and has cool complications.
Beautiful movement.
Another great video Stian, thanks so much. I see the simple logic behind the triple date now, this gives me a little confidence to take on a Framont triple date I have here - nice watch, accurate to within seconds a day but the day and date are reluctant to move properly. This will no doubt be one of those things where afterward I will wonder what all the fuss was 😀
@VintageWatchServices

Mechanical watches are entirely logical indeed, you just sometimes need to really have a deep lok before you see it. But once you do, it will be an epiphany :) Good luck with your Framont, Alan!
Great video. I had a 1940's pierce single pusher chronograph. I wish I still had it... Great watch
I like your videos and your sense of humor very much. The result is that I got fascinated with the vintage Chronographs. That much that I ended up buying a vintage Chronograph on eBay 🙃, I hope it was a good idea as I have only very limited knowledge of watches. Thank you and greetings from Berlin.

What a curious thing! This slogan "it is recommended by 9 out of 10 dentists" is kind of popular here in Brazil. I guess marketing strategies are kind of a universal language.
That's a really nice vintage watch. Looks like it was keeping pretty darn good time too. I wonder if that's one of the earlier watches to use that form of date display around the outside with the quarter moon looking indicator on a hand. I've seen it on some more modern high end watches certainly.
@VintageWatchServices

Thanks for watching! The crescent tip is a pretty common way of displaying the date in triple calendar watches, simply to give enough space for the weekday and month. And it looks very cool on watches without the triple calendar also :)

Thanks for the great content! I was just looking for a video where you reduced the size of the barrel bridge hole and couldn't find it...so perfect timing that it was in this video also. Do you have any guidelines for how much sideshake is too much for the barrel arbor? I have an amplitude problem and think that this might be the culprit, but before I get out Thor's hammer and ruin the whole thing I am trying to get a sense of how to tell when you need to do this. Thanks again for the great content! I couldn't find the other video because I've watched most all of them and can't remember what I learned where. Great work!
@VintageWatchServices
Жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching! It's difficult to give an exact measure of how much play is fine, but if you can visibly move the barrel arbor back and forth or if there's is significant wear under the ratchet wheel, you should try to fix it. It's not a difficult thing to do, but you do need a staking set and smoothing broaches.
watch previously worn by an orangatang very good zoom photography, even i can see your work!... keep up the good work i enjoy watching 👍🏻
