An UNTOUCHED 60 year old IWC caliber 89?!
Ойын-сауық
Today we have what looks like an untouched IWC caliber 89 from 1964 on the bench. Join me for a stripdown and service of this beautiful piece of watch history as we struggle to see any marks of anyone working on this watch before!
As always we'll go on a couple of detours, including a sequel to Mean Girls and an assessment of the durability of New Year's resolutions.

Beautiful movement! Thanks for allowing us to look over your shoulder this year. Your format is spot on with a perfect mix of history, technology and humor. Wishing you and your kin all the best for 2023.
Simple but well made and beautiful watch.
The wheezing became part of the video. Like a beat. Like a tick. Lovely.
Hello. Thanks for the video. Interestingly, I'm renovating my father-in-law's watch. He got it from his mother 60 years ago. The watch is from 1949. Since then it (the watch!!) lay in a drawer and was not worn. Now I'm renovating it. It also has no scratches or so, so I have to be extra careful (am a hobbyist!). Thanks, the video helps me a lot. Greetings Marc
Lovely movement in a very elegant time piece ❤️👍🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Can't even appreciate the care that went into mass-producing these movements enough :) A watchmaker told me that you could swap bridges between movements and the Côtes de Genève would match up.
Time setting sounds so nice. Great click.
Beautifully designed and decorated movement. It almost deserves a a clear back so the owner can admire and show off the movement. Merry ho ho, Stian (and family)!
Thanks for showing us this beautiful watch.
Good restoration & nice timepiece
Love these old minimalist watches. Somewhere Mies is smiling.
God jul to you and yours Stian (if you're celebrating). I hope you finally get the nose hair trimmer and toenail grinders you've been craving so long!
That's the cleanest and least worn watch I've ever seen you work on. The owner and previous watchmakers were very meticulous and careful. And you too, of course! Really cool how you showed the pallet fork staff skewed to the right, indicating the kind of beat error. I had not seen that before. Thanks as always, Stian, and Merry Christmas to you!

Yes, the hands cleaned up well and passed muster.
At first I thought you were going to leave the hairspring untouched and do a lousy job, but I knew you knew better. Sure enough at 20mins you change the position of the hairspring to have the index zeroed and beat figured out. You would be surprised how many watchmakers across the pond just leave it and say to the customer "oh you just get that (error and a index off to one side) in a watch that old". Some of these schools don't teach hairspring work nor recommend a good bench practice book. Nice xmas treat though, thank you.
gorgeous watch!
That is a beautiful watch.
A pleasure to hear you and see you at work . Hope you are already in vacation mode! All the best to you and all the viewers for the Holidays !🎉
What a beautiful yet simple looking watch. Merry Christmas Stian.
it amazes me how similar are the tasks of manual precision and dexterity in watchmaking vs.l surgery.
My favorite movement!
Simple, elegant and awesome! Beautiful watch. Merry Christmas.
If we want to talk Maß produced beauty, Check out a Hamilton railroad pocket watch… although I do lust after a caliber 89 myself. I’ve bought a few watches after your videos of certain movements, particularly the Longines 30L and the Ebel 1911 Sport Chronograph; I also have Omega 550s (quite a few-lost count honestly) 1020s. (I own two, one being the first ‘luxury’ watch I ever bought, and the other costing me $37 in good, running, accurate condition), and an eta 2824 (a pair of Sandoz of Asian assembly, and I did own (but sold) a Tissot Ballade, the first Swiss mechanical I bought new- actually I only bought two Swiss mechanical watches new, the other being an Omega 2531.80) but those I bought before you started, lol. Excellent job on this one, and the other caliber 89. I mean the shown work is all that I’d wish for a watchmaker to lavish on a watch I sent in for service, and the serious commentary is brilliantly informative and understandable to the novice. But I miss the quantity of humor some videos had more of.
I love the sheer subtle elegance of watches like this. That being said: It's really hard not to picture this video being narrated by Christoph Waltz's character from Inglorious Basterds. 😎 Great work!
Others have mentioned it, this movement is really beautiful. The choice of colors and metal surfacing finishing is really something. Thank you for sharing this beauty.
Great watch and great job. Thank you.
Very nice job again! Top tier service.
Such a simple yet extremely elegant movement. Thanks for sharing and Merry Christmas
Lost in a watch and real life happening all around you. Happy Christmas Stian. Adrian.
Fantastic work
First. Man you're not kidding about the fix o drop bottles. Good grief it's insane. Nice watch, it cleaned up well. I'm in total agreement with you, the different materials used make for a beautiful color palette inside.
Hope that you and your family will have a wonderful holiday season and all the best in 2023. IWCs are so classy. Many thanks.
I do think this is one of the most beautiful movements ever made and that goes also for the styles IWC used in dials and cases back then. Highly underrated I feel. I would love to own an example one day. Simple black calf or buffalo strap with black stitching, a nice thin strap would be the perfect accompaniment to it as well. Non of those god awful modern things with the horizontal lug end stitches, YUK!

To make the watch even more special, buy one from the year of your birth. Thats what I did. Elegantly understated without bling. An 8541D.1967. It makes me proud every time I wear it! Oh yes. I am in worse shape than my IWC!
Thank you for repeatedly explaining how things work every video. I admire your patience. Having to take apart something and put it back in over and over until it's just right would irritate me. Thanks for sharing and the new content. Merry Christmas.
A very Merry Christmas Stian, thank you so much for sharing the wonderful skills and knowledge you have, best wishes to you and yours in 2023
Happy Christmas to you and your family, thank you for all the restorations, services and Humour throughout the year. Thank you Stian.
I did enjoy that. Thanks. 🎄🥳
I'm still amazed at the craftsmanship in watches in general Stian. The face is simple, yet elegant with no date or calendar to take away from its beauty. Merry Christmas to you and yours Stian and cheers from this old retired coot living the dream in Tennessee.
Stunning.
Lovely! Merry Christmas to you and yours! And thank you for being a good companion for another year. You are a small but important and wholly positive part of my life. If I may offer a very small correction, actually, there used to be two guilds in the watchmaking town of Schlopwasser. Die Rechtshänder Schrauber and Die Linkshänder Schraubendreher, and under the Westfalian Concord of 1710, the former could make only right hand turn screws, and the latter could only make left-hand turn screws. (This had something to do with superstition against left-handed people, but details are understandably murky.) Of course, the watchmakers were innocent of any discrimination, but were forced to live under the rules, and had to order their tiny screws from the two different sources. Interestingly, with the guilds, the distinction was even carried through to marriage traditions. The right handed screwmakers could often be heard to say to their wives, “Liebchen, you’re right, as always.” But their sinister counterparts said, “You’re left.” Understandably, their divorce rate was much higher. It’s all true, but you could be forgiven for not knowing.

Have a merry Christmas. Fortune to have cal 89 from 1950s. Same dial and hands, but the bombe lugs and it's original box. It really beautiful movement. It's my phone background actually.
Always enjoy your posts Stian, you and your family have a great Christmas.
That was fun!
this IWC piece is really beautiful. Merry xmas :)
Omg it's so beautiful
I've been watching watchmaker videos for a few years now. When I do and they inevitably remove, clean and replace the balance wheel jewels, (cap jewel and hole jewel) after assembled and after running, I can't for the life of me think why they do this. I cringe every time the jewels are replaced, waiting for the jewel to drop into the spinning balance and snap off a pivot, or worse. All these other watchmakers do this without exception. Thank you for being the exception. Which IMHO, should be the rule. I'm just a novice, and therefore my opinion is perhaps invalid. But it seems to me that if you remove the jewels from the balance wheel cock and maniplate before being putting them into the cleaning machine, and reinstall them after cleaning and before running, all the parts will come out cleaner and you will reduce the risk of damage greatly. Thanks for what you do. Love your method, approach and style.
This watch is absolutely.....uh..... timeless. Very elegant, and very elegantly serviced. Thank you

Stian have a great Christmas and a happy New Year. Great to see no trouble in paradise. Keep well from New Zealand 🇳🇿
Merry Christmas. Thanks for the lessons and entertainment with your videos.
A very Merry Christmas to you and your family and thank you for all your fascinating videos this past year.
Must have spent a lot of time in the sock drawer, in between trips to Maison Manesse. Very nice (and careful) service! I think I will start growing lab-created fix-o-drop bottles - got to be cheaper than the hand-cut offerings! Speaking of proper tools for working gently, I'm still trying to find some brass #7A-BRA tweezers. You sent me contact info for Regine (thank you!) but they do not answer my emails. I actually tried calling (they are open from 3:30PM to 1:30AM my time) call went to hold for 5 minutes, then disconnected. Anyway, I've thoroughly enjoyed watching this year! Please keep up the great videos. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!
Merry Christmas Stian extend to whole family 🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉
I love these Cal 89 IWC movements. I learned about them from a prior vid of yours in fact. Thanks! Merry Christmas!
Hello Stian, thank you for your gentle art of making teaching lessons. Greetings from Czech Republic.
I've never seen a prettier movement, a work of art for sure. Thanks for another fascinating video.
We have dozens of Schott bottles in the lab, every lab has them , but your egg timer one is a rediculous price. Merry Christmas and a good new year to you and yours from Scotland.
Thanks for another great video, Stian. Happy holidays!
Thanks again merry Christmas 😊
Wow, what a beauty! Thanks for an awesome content, as always, Stiam! Merry Christmas!
Merry Christmas to you and your family.
Merry Christmas Stian, to you and your family 🎄 🎉
Yes. God jul Stian! Og et godt nytt år! 🇺🇸🇳🇴🇺🇸🇳🇴🇺🇸🇳🇴
For a guy who hates squeaking and grinding mechanics it's a joy watching your thorough lubrication of the entire movement. I've seen quite some videos of other watchmakers being quite sloppy with that.
Merry Christmas thanks for dropping this ..I now have something to watch while I’m wrapping 🎉. Have a great Christmas to you and your family 🇬🇧🎅🏻
A straight and simple beauty!
After watching chaotic police videos, it's always a pleasure to relax to your dulcet tones.
Thank you so much for the holiday gift. It's been some time since you last posted a video featuring the glorious IWC Calibre 89 movement. Watches with this movement should be retrofitted with exhibition cases. It's kind of funny that while mechanical movements generally are appreciated for having a smoother second hand sweep than quartz movements, in the late 1950s several manufacturers such as JLC, Rolex and Omega, invested considerable effort to develop the dead-beat second function, which caused the second hand to move in one second increments like quartz watches do. It was very difficult and expensive to accomplish. The watches were intended to provide more accurate time measurements for engineers, but never really caught on. Now they are comparatively rare. Hope you are feeling better, and Merry X-mas to you and the family, Stian.
Thank you for such beautiful videos this year sir. A very Merry Christmas Stian from Westgate-on-Sea England 🎄🎅🇬🇧🍀
Thanks for the excellent video 👍 happy Christmas and New year
omg what a beauty well have a very merry christmas Stian to you and your family
I love the old IWC movements, just beautiful. I also love these videos, but I've seen them all now, some twice. You need to create more! 😁
I notice this balance wheel has small weights on it. I've noticed other watches have no balance wheel weights. I assume they are weights and that they're used to balance the wheel, but how does the original watchmaker know where to place the weights? And why are there so many on this balance wheel but on others there are none? Thank you for sharing your work with us. It's a pleasure to watch a craftsman like yourself practice his trade.

Thanks for watching! Those little screws are timing screws, and they're placed in pairs symmetrically around the rim of the balance to allow a watchmaker to make tiny adjustments if the balance is out of poise. This balance in fact has two special eccentric weights at the balance spokes to make such adjustments.
Amazing 👏
What a sweety ❤❤. Merry Christmas 🥂
My grandpa's old Hamilton pocket watch has service marks inside the case. I'm thankful it does because it's a permanent record of when the watch was serviced
Very nice watch. Thanks. Merry Christmas and Happy new year to you and your family.
A beautiful movement as mentioned...Love the tour and workmanship in servicing this classic. Looks great. Love the detail explanations as you work along. I feel like I'm there with you. Great job as usual.. A Merry Christmas to you and yours and all the best for the New Year. Look forward to more fascinating videos. Never get tired of them.. Cheers..!
Beautiful movement indeed and a joy to watch You working on it. Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to You and Yours, Stian!

That is a particularly beautiful watch, both dial and movement.
Thanks for yet another great video, Stian, and Merry Xmas to you and your family! All the best for 2023 and beyond.
How nice to see things that are just made so beautifully. Thank you for making such good pictures of watches for us to be able to see. I like what you do. And it is pleasing to see a good quality old watch, and how well it has held up. It is mostly true that "You get what you pay for".
THANKS,,,,GREAT VIDEO

It is such a beautiful movement that I nearly drooled! 😄 I've heard of IWC, but never had the opportunity to see the craftsmanship behind the watch back. The watch parts are very clean...so this must have been a beautiful Christmas present to you before you let it go. Thank you for...the slow and patient way you went, taking your time, which in itself is educational and such a pleasure to watch. All the very best to you, Wendi 🌻

Merry Christmas to you and your family. I was overjoyed to see you working on a Cal.89! I bought one; a 1949 CAl.89 with teardrop lugs and fish crown, about 10 years ago, and paid 4000Skr., as it wasn't keeping good time. Nevertheless, I knew enough to know that it was a bargain for a calibre I'd always wanted to own. I got it serviced in Malmo straightaway and it kept very good time, but decided it could do better. I gave it the tiniest of nudges on the regulation and we were in business. From then on it never varied from the ORIGINAL timesetting by more than +/-15s after 3 months! The only reason why it wasn't longer is that I forget to wind it one day. What a superb piece of engineering and many thanks for your great program. BTW. Did you know that a major shareholder in IWC at one time was Carl Jung the Psychologist.
