I have several and I will tell you from my 25+ years raising all breeds from jungle fowl to Americuena, and I have kept them in coops and free ranged. I prefer free range there nearly zero cost to keep them, aside from Laying pellets and maybe some of a good mixed feed(with various seeds from pumpkin to sterilized cannabis seeds) which could cost at most 30 bucks a month. But, there is virtually zero cost with free range. And eggs galore. My girls lay ALL YEAR ROUND specifically because I allow them to free range. And this can be done if you own land, more then an acre, preferably. As to assure neighbors dogs or cats can't get to them. Another key to keeping happy hens....Keep them beside your house, so they see you everytime you go in or out, it assures safety with them. Chickens are SO much smarter then people give them credit for.

Yeah but how much was the big coop? We have 8 chickens. Get plenty of eggs but the initial cost of building the coop and the enclosure was pretty steep. I bet we have 800 bucks in it.

Put oyster shell powder in their water. They'll lay more eggs. The calcium in the shells helps them make eggs' shells.

Second thing after a food garden, chickens are my number one must have if I ever have space.

Wow! Twenty eggs here in a tray cost nearly twelve dollars (nzd )! Thing it's time I start with a few chickens and pay them to produce our eggs 😂 rather than buying from the supermarket!

Being self sufficient and resilient will always keep you above recession. While not everyone has this opportunity having food produced at a low cost of maintenance is a life saver.

I’m paying almost $7 for 18 eggs right now -_- living in an apartment. Me and boy friend both eat eggs for breakfast sometimes added to other meals for misc stuff. Definitely saving money!

wonderful! don't expect them to lay full year in the following years however. the ones we have (vyandotten chicken) laid eggs regularly for maybe 1 1/2 years, now they're in their retirement years, which is like (fingers crossed they stay healthy) 10 years of probably one egg per week or maybe month. I'm sure you know what you do, I've just seen way too many people get chickens during the pandemic to save money and be super disappointed in the performance
