Summary:
Hello everyone. I am Dr. Parthasarathy, Senior Consultant, Surgical-Gastroenterology and Minimal Access Surgery, at KIMS hospital, Minister Road, Secunderabad. Today, what we are going to do is to collect and address some of the fears and doubts that our patients have at the time of discharge after they undergo hernia operation, and we will try to give answers to those questions. Let us see those questions.
1. How many days of bed rest are needed after hernia surgery?
Almost all patients ask this question, “Should they be under bed rest”, or they assume that they have to be under bed rest. If the answer is yes, they ask as to how many days they should be under complete bed rest after a hernia operation.
It is a myth that after one major operation, one has to be under complete bed rest and should not move out of the bed. It is a myth and it does more harm. Bed rest actually does more harm than good to the patients. In fact, we strive very hard to achieve early mobilization of patients.
Even on the same day of surgery, we make the patients get out of bed and get them walking. Thus, the advantage this has is that, when the patient starts walking, his breathing improves, the blood flow from the leg starts flowing to the heart and thereby, the chances of any blood clot
developing in the lower limbs which is called as Deep Vein Thrombosis, is less. The patient’s intestine starts functioning earlier and their appetite is returned earlier. It also gives a lot of psychological strength to the patient to be able to recover faster. Thus, one advice that I always
give to my patients is, “You do not need absolute bed rest”. Of course, they should not be doing any strenuous exercise, but all patients after a hernia operation, be it laparoscopic or open, should be encouraged to get out of bed as much as possible and move around. Absolute bed rest is no longer recommended for hernia operations. We give adequate pain relief in the form of painkillers when the patients go home. Hence, that should take care of the pain factor and they should encourage themselves to get out of bed and be on the move and thereby, they actually shorten their recovery time.

I have watched about 5 of your videos now. Maybe 6. I don't usually comment on videos even though I may "like" them. However, I wanted to comment this time to say I am truly grateful to you for the information you have given me. Wish I could come to India but alas I will have to get my help from a Dr. here in the states. I feel ok about it now. Thank You Pathasarathy

Do they need to apply ice packs to reduce swelling? Is a girdle support indicated? Is a laxative indicated to reduce straining? When a shower is recommended? When coughing is external pressure indicated for support?

I believe its good to eat one healthy meal a day, high protein, max about 70% of calories, if you are fat. Your body and especially intestines need rest.
