I take 1-year rest periods between my squats because it involves a lot of muscle groups. I don't want to over-train these toothpicks.

I rest 5 minutes between compound movements, now sets to form failure, l rest until my breath is totally back to normal. This is how l have made my biggest gains, l agree go for feel as well don't be afraid to try something different ,once last sets of each exercise is until form failure, you would have had a good workout.

same ... best muscle gains i have experienced besides newbie gains were from intense heavy sets with 4 to 5 min rest between sets

You guys have took muscle talking to the next level with having not one opinion but three which really gives a solid break down because you guys don’t always agree but have the end goals the same.

Rest also depends on the exercise you're doing. Taxing exercises like squats take more recovery time between sets than something like bicep curls.

There is 0 (and I really mean zero) evidence that resting more than 3 minutes is bad for muscle growth. It is bad from a time managment perspective, but from a hypertrophy perapective it makes perfect sense.

Absolutely. Also, if I do any set to failure, there's no frigging way I can do the same set after only 1 minute. Sometimes I do fewer reps with even 3 minutes of rest. I guess for muscle growth it's "whenever you feel strong again to do the same set" :)) That usually it's after 4 minutes of rest (for me)

I think I heard 80% recovery occurs by 3 minutes and by 15 minutes you’ve hyper compensated. Not worth the time for most people but probably actually ideal for strength training.

@@whalingwithishmael7751 Yeah, as I said it doesn't make sense to rest 15 minutes, but if you had infinite time it is still better than one minute

Thanks MPS. I am a beginner doing stronglifts. At the start I could need maybe one minute rest between sets. Four months into the program I time my rest to three minutes to recover for next set

Do you add load or reps when you increase rest period and vice versa?

Yeah but say you’re going to failure for 10 reps on you’re first and the last rep is Grindy there’s no way you’re going to get 10 reps on the second and the third set unless you’re resting at least 5-6 minutes

I am simple: The more muslces involved in an exercise the longer the rest phase. But since I dont want to sit around for minutes: I do a deadlift followed by a 1minute break, followed by something unreleated like a incline dumbbell press, followed by another minute break, back into Deadlift.

ATP takes about 2 minutes to be close to being fully replenished. If you are taking your sets to failure then you should wait the 2 minutes. I usually do 2-3 and have seen good results.

I’ve started strength training but since I’m fairly new to it I’m not using heavy weights or crazy resistance. I’m assuming my rest periods could be shorter because of this or are long rests still needed?
