Yes that is correct Akiem like all companies there is a certain amount of testing that happens through the process. It would be difficult to test it over 10 years without waiting 10 years and many products would never ship to the end consumer. We are now at 9 years for our longest operating panels and they are still going strong. We of course received test data prior to this that stated 10+ years and our supplier has 10,000 projects in 62 different countrie with it's longest operating product, still working after 22 years at IBM in the USA.

Is there a blackout option? One for those who work nightshifts and sleep during the day. If yes, can that option have blackout and opaque?

That would be fucking amazing. But I can guess that even white opaque with some curtains would still be great. You wouldn't get any stray light right into your fucking eyeball at 11am.

@@Switchglass, I think you missed his point. You showed the two tests, both of which make sense, but MistAtsiM is talking about the temp diff when one side is internal and the other side is external. One could imagine it having an effect on the materials.

Hi D edwards, good point! There are a few different answers to that and to cover off on those I would need to elaborate on the different evolutions of each of the PDLC products that have been developed over the last 25 years. The other consideration is where it is located internal and or external (direct sunlight or indirect sunlight) and how often it is in use. Let’s start off the bat with the assumption that all these products are being laminated by qualified companies using quality products and that the longevity of each of the evolution comparisons are not compromised by this part of the process. Another consideration is (the electrical Part) and the quality of busbar application and what materials are being used. The reason I mentioned this is that if it is not done properly then UV cracking can occur due to the silver paste a material used in the process causing the panel to fail prematurely. Side note the silver paste is used for PCB (Panel Circuit Boards) and is not designed to be used externally or needs to be out of direct sunlight. Now to start with a summary of the various Evolutions of the products on the market Evolution 1 is old First generation (Evolution1, US Patent 4435047, patent expired) utilizes water soluble polyvinyl alcohol to disperse liquid crystal droplets, called Emulsion Technology or Nematic Curvilinear Aligned Phase (NCAP) technology. Second generation (Evolution 2, US Patent 4688900, patent expired) utilizes epoxy to disperse liquid crystal droplets, called Polymer Dispersed Liquid Crystal (PDLC) technology. Third generation (Evolution 3, US Patent 5270843, still in force) utilizes a non-linear polymer to disperse liquid crystal droplets, called Non-linear Polymer Dispersed Liquid Crystal Display (NPD-LCD) technology. A general term for all of generations is Liquid Crystal Microdroplet Display or LCMD. Both 1 and 2 Evolutions of LC switchable films invented over quarter of century ago have similar features. Evo 1 and 2 film should be laminated between glass to prevent absorption of moisture from the air. These products are recommended for internal use and if used externally then would need to be double glazed (IGU) insulated glazing unit. So to answer your questions Evolution 1 and 2 installed internally (no direct sunlight) used daily and being Switched off for 50% of the time will last between 15-20 years remember the caveat to this is specified above in paragraph one. Externally also used daily and being Switched off for 50% of the time and double glazed using a high quality soft coat low e glass will last between 5-10 years. Evolution 3 product installed internally (no direct sunlight) note that this product does not require to be switched off to assist with longevity and can be left on permanently will last between 30-50 years remember the caveat to this is specified above in paragraph one. Evolution 3 product installed externally (note that this product does not need to be double glazed) will last between 20-30 years. Now there are not many articles in the world answering this question due to the complexity and variations in the quality of products out there. My best example is looking at plasma displays which were invented in July 1964 at the University of Illinois by professors Donald Bitzer and Gene Slottow. Then came (LCD) in 1972 and LED 1977, the quality of these first generations of products were very poor however these products were improved and development over time which improved their reliability. There so many different manufacturers of these technologies and pricing variations fluctuate wildly. So my point is to actually come up with a fixed rule to encompass every permutation of variance is somewhat impossible. However I have done my best to use the knowledge that I have acquired in working in the industry to give you the best answer I can. I hope it’s goes some way to answering your question. Regards Roman Watkins CEO (Switchglass)
