How Long Does Dead by Daylight Have Left?
Ойындар
Hey everyone, today I wanted to have a sort of open discussion video looking at DbD in its current state, and simply considering how much longer the game has.
At the time of this video's release Chapter 32 has been released - Dungeons & Dragons! The new killer is Vecna, the Survivor is a group of Bards with an elf and a human member. We also got a castle map!

I think something else to be mentioned, is the age. Eventually the game won't be able to do what the devs want. Honestly, I do think they need to do a DBD 2, but obviously not in the way of Overwatch. They would need to nail it, and it would secure the longevity of the game, getting rid of the initial spaghetti code, and having more options for what limits they can stretch. I've recently been able to put myself in the mindset that, it's just a game. Don't take things personally, keep the end game chat forever closed, and guess what? I've never had more fun playing the game. Your videos were the only reason I kept playing DBD, but now I can truly play and enjoy my time in it. No matter how many bumps in the road DBD has had, it always finds a way to triumphantly speed into the sunset. The 6.1.0 update, the licenses that came after Forged in Fog and ToT, new game modes, etc. This game continues to bring us jaw-droppers and that could be a potential death. If the devs try to please every audience and DBD's horror roots take a prolonged backseat, that will be the end. I, for one, hope it is eternal. Thank you for the video. ❤
Also, as a TCM Family main, it made me realize that DBD killers get to depend on themselves for success... in TCM Killer, you have to depend on your teammates
I personally think that if the devs and upper management get their shit together and staart listening to what the community actually WANTS instead of corporate greed, the game could easily last 10 or more years, especially if they branch out and add some sort of story mode, alternate game modes, custom map creation, or some form of show.
@thelegendaryorcgenocider4182

They HAVE been listening to the community for the past year or so. The devs are far from malicious; they're just inexperienced. Because Dead By Daylight is their first real big hit, and so far, the only big hit they have. It's not greed that made them so unresponsive, it's not knowing what to do. WHO to listen to. And people being "renound content creators" in dbd has shown to mean pretty little in that regard, they are netettaining but all of them have their own strong biases
I have another question. So the entity feeds off emotions yes? And it gets that from the killers causing stress and stuff to the survivors, but if the entity needs that why let them have a chance? Like the entity puts the generators there, gives the survivors a way to win, including stunning the killer, the hatch and stuff like that. But why?
@spectictacular5557
16 күн бұрын
Because it also feeds HEAVILY on hope. Hope is one of the main food sources of the Entity, so make the survivors think they’re gonna escape and go back to their lives but really they just go right back to the campfire
@bruhmemento8314
16 күн бұрын
Hope is another powerful emotion that it can feed off, and so giving the survivor's even a chance of hope, triumph, etc. against their killers just adds to the buffet for the Entity to feed off of.
@bullymaguirejr.3869
16 күн бұрын
Probably so that survivors also generate emotions like hope, adrenaline, despair, excitement etc., also killers chasing survivors probably generates more emotion in form of the thrill of the chase and frustration, instead of just catching survivors with ease.
@gremlinwc8996
16 күн бұрын
Because hope and gratification are also strong emotions to feed on, and it makes the feelings of pain and fear worse if they have a chance to escape and still fail. Edit: plus it often feeds on emotions from the killers, and they act as an inverse of survivors generally where survivors feeling positive emotions makes the killer feel negative emotions, and vice verse Edit 2: that being said, Hatch wasn't actually created by the entity. A scientist in the lore named Vigo managed to create hatch and its stayed in the trials, despite the fact that the entity didn't intend for it
@RedtheTricksterFox
16 күн бұрын
It’s heavily explained, It’s not JUST the survivors’ emotions, or negative ones like stress or fear. It’s all emotion, so giving the survivors a chance to escape = hope, an emotion, and the killers getting stunned can cause anger, make survivors feel empowered. Even escaping, the hope the survivors have of exiting the trial grounds hoping that this one is different, that they won’t return to the campfire, only for the entity to rip that hope away from the survivors by bringing them back to the campfire. Some things the entity didn’t need to grab, like Jonesy the cat, sure a cat has emotion, but the entity uses to create emotion for the survivors. Surprise for happening across him in a locker on Nostromo, Ripley seeing him in the lobby, relieving Ripley that he’s still alive and well.
Right now it is probably in its renaissance. We moved away from dark times like forged in fog and tools of torment and got some of the best chapters they ever made with all things wicked and DND. Also the castlevania chapter will open up many more crossovers maybe even with Nintendo

The game is in probably the best spot it has ever been. It has just got DnD which is popular amongst non-horror fans. We r getting Castlevania which might be even more popular because it is Nintendo connected which is really big, and 2v8, the most requested mode besides maybe Prop Hunt, is finally coming. Even if it does die in 2 years, it will have at least been one of the few games that lasted a decade before dying.
It dies when we let it die
My biggest complaint about the game is, if I want to play as killer I have to wait nearly 10 mins to find a lobby
I’ve played for 5 years and solo queue is so awful I’m considering uninstalling after every time I grab a few games. I only play for a couple hours a day as that’s all the time I have and I don’t even play every day, but I barely ever get to escape because despite the variety of killers, most of them play “optimally” which just destroys solo queue and it makes the game very unenjoyable.

It's a PVP game. Fundamentally, this is not an issue that can be fixed easily. The problem only becomes exacerbated as players develop their skills further. I've even started to see low hour count players dominating purely because they've watched a lot of KZread content before hopping in.
The only way you could kill DBD is if some outside factor influenced it. The recent Helldiver 2 controversy halved and likely contributed to the game's early demise and if BHVR were to just do something that would generate such a big boycott we could realistically see an end to DBD. Aside from that it will stay alive for as long as it is profitable, we'll likely see it slow down in terms of releases like it happened with Team Fortress 2 and very slowly drop in players but unless the servers entirely shut down, or a Dead by Daylight 2 happens, it's not gonna truly die.

DBD is such a diverse game, with so many perk combos and it is so adrenaline inducing to loop and get hits and win. If they keep this up with new killers to change up the meta and the gameplay, then it will stay alive for a long time.
Chaos Shuffle was absolutely amazing! I got to try perks without needing to grind the shards to buy them, some of which I never would've even considered trying but wound up loving, but you also didn't have to deal with any super annoying killer builds or annoying killers in general
Considering there’s still so much for BHVR to add to dbd (future chapters, game modes, features) I don’t think it’s going to “die” anytime soon. The only thing that can truly kill it is the community and/or if BHVR just does something really controversial.

I just came back from a break from the moment chucky dropped until now. Honestly was burnt out after playing the game all the time. Now I'm back and I find myself having fun again. Trust me this really works.
As long as my friends want to play customization gamemode
i took a 2-3 year break personally and just returned when the unknown came out. I still cant believe DBD is nearly 8 years old. i swear the Halloween trailer just dropped yesterday it feels like.
I think the biggest reason that TCM, Killer Clowns etc will never "kill" DBD is because the basis for those games is around one specific license where as DBD doesn't have a specific story, movie, book that is based on it is just an asymmetrical horror game know for the iconic killer licenses that it holds. Adding Freddy, Jason, Ghostface etc to those other games just wouldn't make sense in the license of those games.
The finale to DbD will be very similar to the ending of Cheers.
I really enjoy both the game AND your videos. You have a great voice and I enjoy your insights.
I am a personal example of how dbd’s expanding horror palate can bring in new players or even (in my case) compel old players who left to come back to the game. I stopped playing consistently after Skull merchant’s release but the SECOND I saw the d&d teaser?? It was over. And now I’m back
I started playing this game 12 days ago and im having fun. Ive enjoyed my time playing overall.
This game concept is art the devs know how to keep the game interesting
I made two one-year breaks. Now I am back and I am really loving it again
I mean, I think DbD will either go on carrying like a zombie forever, untill the entire studio closes doors, or someone manages to make a asymetric game that can take it on. The horror licenses alone will carry it into perpetuity, and that's assuming nothing really changes. If the game gets good updates that keep it fresh and new, maybe longer. I also think it's interesting that you bring up the fact that DbD's versatility is key to it, and I agree. It's why I think if you make a asymetric game like this, you need a diffferent genre thenn horror in it's entirely, and to boot an idea that allows for variety. I had what I think is a good one... but I'm not a game dev so it will only ever exist in my mind.
Another thing that can keep this game alive for years to come is that younger players will continue to come in. It’s been 8 years since this game came out in 2016, so someone who was 5 in 2016 would now be 13, and could be getting into the horror genre, and then become interested in a game like DBD which is in a lot of ways a celebration of horror. This is something that’s happened to other games such as TF2 in the past.
to the whole "take a break" thing, ive tried that, i stopped playing at around christmas and only came back last week and immediately i got tunnelled out of my first few games and didnt get to play, im continuing to play to see if it gets better but none of the games since have improved. taking a break just made me less capable of defending myself against the tunnellers as i need to regain my muscle memory, and ultimately didnt stop the problem or make it seem more bearable. just a bit disheartening really, dont feel like theres much more i can do but keep playing for another 1000 hours until i can solo a killer for 5 gens or quit the game and come back in a year to see if they finally fixed it, and neither of those are good options. just wanna have fun and enjoy my favourite game :/
I started playing dbd in 2019 right after the Ghostface chapter, took an hiatus after Slingers release and started playing it again since Chucky (and on pc instead of console). I’ve never had more fun in this game than recently and I don’t see it dying soon (for me personally)
This is one of the most reasonable takes I've seen, thanks Azhy
My thoughts, are that the game is pretty much getting more and more popular, and I say that even just having taken a year break drop DBD only to get back into it heavily when someone I enjoy playing games with mentions it
Dead or not, I feel like a "health" chapter could help it along. If BHVR took the time to look back at a few things, adjust perks, killers, etc would be good. Not to mention the massive bugs that came in with D&D or the engine update still causing servers to crash a LOT during games. Basically if they went back and gave every killer as much love as recent releases. My main point, Freddy needs voicelines XD
We got 2 good chapters in a row now and an event that can give over 200k bp+ per game, right now you can get really cool killers and neat survivors, gain a ton of points to unlock perks on whatever you have so far and prepare And if you have most stuff done it is still easier to get the newest characters to high prestige, imo it's a good time rn
I don't know if too many people pay attention to it but the dbd lore is amazing and really well written for the characters
I think you can really immortalize any game when you give players access to map editors and such, I think if there is ever a day where behaviour wants to move on from dbd a steam workshop similar to l4d2 where only models and maps can be modded would be awesome
I just recently got back into dead by daylight after not playing for several years. It’s a breath of fresh air compared to what I’ve played in the past and I’ve been having a blast meeting folks in the community. As an outsider looking in, the game feels fun, the community is generally pretty positive, most things feel balanced which I imagine is tough for an asymmetrical game, and I’m excited for what’s to come honestly. Full speed ahead 😎
Fun fact : In France for our exam, we must talk for 10 minutes about a question linked to our "spécialités", which are 2 subjects that you choose to study more that the rest. And I precisely talk about why Dead by Daylight outlives all other Survival Horror PVP Asymetrical using math. Really really interesting to do !
As long as there are collaborations of horror icons and original horror ideas, game won't ever truly die. If anything it'll be more of a question of when, if ever, DBD becomes DBD2, as most games seem to go after a certain milestone for a visual, gameplay and ui update
Honestly, I did join the game on a regular basis only last September, but I feel like the game is just really beginning to solidify itself as a franchise. The game is pushing a decade, but all it’s had so far is physical merch from a specialized store and a board game, along with lukewarm crossplay and a mobile game. It feels like the IP accumulation has kept it alive, getting ready for the next step, as it surprises me that the game has really only had the basic game mode to stay on. What do we have now? Excitement over original killers almost as high as IPs, new game modes coming to switch things up, consistent events, more focus on crossplay and cross progression, THREE new games in the franchise to build the IP with one already out, AND an upcoming movie. Add on to this the high likelihood of DbD coming to Universal’s HHN in the next few years, and this franchise is pretty much guaranteed to get even more popular unless everything flops massively.
I agree very much with your first point, DBD has no equal or similar in its own type. No other game can manage to provide the variety of killers and survivors (licenses and originals) as they do. I see the end of the game in a very long time or because of a year of bad licenses and releases. I do tend to agree with the need of maybe a few new modes to make the game more varied and make it less tryhard lol
I know this is off topic of the video I have become a vecna main and I just wanted to suggest a build for you barbecue and chili pain resonance lethal pursuer and spies from the shadows for the perks and for the add ons are ring of spell storing and tricksters glove
It must be great if DBD can have big changes in a colossal update like what DOTA 2 and LoL did.
1:49 Killer Klowns From Outer Space: The Game & PROJECT: PLAYTIME are also around and maybe doing something I think
The only thing keeping the game afloat are the licenses, once those run out, then the game is done. So, it's death isn't going to be after a set ammount of time, rather after a certain event, it being, no more licenses.
You neglected to mention Identity V, which functions almost identical to dbd. That being said it was made in conjunction with bhvr and NetEase.
I doubt it's going to die, it has a big community and it takes ages for everyone to give up on it
Love the videos man keep it up
5:14 I really hope year 9 goes well The chapters this year are some of the least hyped ones that we had in a while.
As a dedicated player since launch in 2016, it's been absolutely mind-boggling to see DbD go from a small, buggy indie game to such a huge horror game with a stable community. It's so nice to see what they've achieved over time by bagging all these MASSIVE and iconic licenses like Alien, etc. I've taken breaks here and there, but with all the content that's been released over the years I've never fully quit playing it lmaoo
We just entered the golden years, I think. Pretty much all the famous horror characters are in there and they just switched to a new engine that will allow them to really upgrade the game.
What I would love to see in DBD is a story mode or campaign where by completing it you get cosmetics, Charms, or BP, and with each new chapter release a new chapter of the campaign would be unlocked I feel like this would be an interesting way to tell and continue the story and allow players to try out a new killer before they decide to buy them to use in multiplayer. idk that's just my opinion and I can see why some people may disagree with me so feel free to : )
I stopped playing around the time skull merchant released and I started playing around the time Wesker got added. Personally I don't think the game has an engaging enough gameplay loop to hold fans long term. However the beauty of this style of game is that it's so casual and so easy to on board that they will constantly pick up new players. Either because People will play the game because of the horror IPs or they just want to play hide and seek on steroids. And because the gameplay itself (especially on the survivor side) is effectively just hold the right bumper simulator effectively anyone of any experience or skill range can play and have fun. Well I personally think dead by daylight is no longer for me and I don't see myself having fun with it anymore. A game made for everyone is a game made for no one and a core audience that really loves the game and will support it for another 15 years. (Or until they make a sequel) And a massive host of casual players joining and leaving will keep the numbers up enough to where behavior will think the investment is worth it.
I will be taking a break on Friday the 21st till however long it takes me to beat Elden Ring dlc
Abt frustrations, the recent Survivor tome challenge of getting Iri Lightbringer got me REALLY frustrrated to the point I’m not gonna be playing until next week. Sometimes challenges that force you into a playstyle you don’t like (I hate gens, I get bored of doing gens so easily and I will be blaming my ADHD for th@) can get you rly frustrated and annoyed with the game esp when u want to fully complete a tome or smth like th@. DBD won’t be dying anytime soon, some of us just need a good break. Ofc, some frustrations in regards to cosmetics r entirely different but that’s an internal BHVR thing I cba getting into 💀
That's what I've been saying for awhile. Why would I play a game where it's JUST TCM? JUST Killer Klowns? In DBD, despite its flaws, I can play as Bubba, Myers, Freddy, a Xenomorph, Sadako (the GOAT) and so many more. The super wide range of IPs that are in DBD is the main reason it's so popular in my opinion. I know people that started playing simply because of the Alien being added. These iconic characters all being in one game is absolutely huge which is why other asymmetrical games always seem to fall off while DBD sticks around. If I get bored of TCM characters, I have so many more in DBD compared to the TCM game. BHVR may not be the best, but the amount of icons of horror they were able to get is incredible
Dbd would have been dead if Last Year The Nightmare released properly
Honestly, their formula has been working great this long, if/Once they start adding new consistent non/temporary game modes it'll seal its survivability probably twice as long. Because one mode does get dull over time after you've played long enough, unless that's just your shtick. But to keep a larger playerbase you have to apply to larger than someone's shtick. That said, I dont think if a game mode is garbage it should stay, but I think they should do something a bit like how apex does, cycle out alternate game modes maybe every week or month, which would let us test differing rules, survivor/killer counts, modified rules that can't be done in just a custom match. Maybe have a few extra rewards for a but to entice players to try them out. This way over time, we'll get a wide variety of options, and the devs can eventually cut out unpopular game modes, and keep the good ones cycling, all the while the core game itself is unaffected, and is as good as it's always been. Could even use alternate game modes to test many changes pre-implimentation, which would SERIOUSLY save them from bad updates. I'm dreaming, but having a week-long game mode that comes around letting you test play the newest killer would also just be amazing for player retention, and fixing up new characters prior to full release with a pricetag, making massive profit increases if they did their job well, since, personally, playing something I like vs seeing something I might like, makes a huge difference in my purchasing decisions, if said playing was only temporary as a test trial.
DBD will never die so long as there aren't bad continuous strings of chapters that come out, and honestly with how the rest of the year looks i think they'll do just fine especially with game modes and modifiers that will be coming out as well as hype chapters like Castlevania up next
as much as i love this game it's not a question of if it will die, but WHEN.
Exclusively asking people who are heavily enfranchised leads to a biased data set. People who have already quit the game would not see or respond to the survey.
Skull Merchant is not in a healthy spot. She still three gens and presses one button to have her little robots guard gens by locating, injuring, and debuffing survivors while she gets buffed. You get to be on a gen for 10 seconds max and then start a chase injured, hindered, and with no option of stealth. If you manage to lead a SM more than five feet away from the 3 gen they just turn around and go back. The games take 30+ minutes and it’s beyond frustrating how hard you have to work against a hopeless goal considering how little work the killer is doing.
If the game won't die at it's lowest, it certanly won't die now
If the game was ending anytime soon, I think we would’ve slowed down the rate of chapters releasing. I have over 2000 hours in for honor, a game in a similar position to dbd. It’s the only game like it, it’s as old just about, and it’s still getting content. Difference is for honor has had many base gameplay shakeups over the years, with us only getting 2 content drops a year, and the devs don’t engage with the community much. The dbd community really takes BHVR for granted, because we get so much content, they’re always talking. I think this game has plenty of time left.
Thank you!
As long as the the game keeps on getting updates and new chapters, the game probably won’t die.
Wait, you really pulled the old classic "Play something else!"
My belief is that with each new killer and survivor added, we are edging closer to the end. Eventually, there will be no new enough perks that can be added… so unless it by daylight offers various game modes/an alternative way to play at that point, the game WILL die. Perk Bloat is already an issue, and it’s only getting worse with each passing update. Even if the perks are cool, and add positively to the game, it still makes it harder for a new players to get in. This leads to another huge problem where, it is extremely hard for new players to get into this game; and that’s a whole separate conversation.
Been playing this game since 2016. Still not sick of it. Love this game it’s one of my favorites I’ll keep playing it
Being a small dbd content creator myself, it would be nice to see the game go on forever, but if anything will kill it I see it being an overall bad string of content which repels players away. This probably won't happen for a while because of how diverse dbd is and can be with their other titles such as Casting of Frank Stone and Project T which reintroduce lore aspects and keep the world feeling fresh and exciting. It's a game, not everyone can play it all the time and it's understandable, but I don't think it's dying anytime soon.
I’d give it like 3-4 years more. However there are many other licenses and og killer ideas they can keep bringing in to complete DbD as what it’s supposed to be which is the museum of horror. We can get FNAF, Jason, Walking Dead, Candyman, Predator, dead space etc. I don’t see a true ending anytime soon as long as the player base continues steadily and people continue to buy skins and characters
Stopped playing this game after lockdown - haven’t looked back since - never been happier
Yea tbh it just has so many characters I just don’t see it going anywhere for a long time
We need Tall Man (RIP) killer, Puppet Master Killer, Reanimator killer... many more killers
It’s difficult to have a straight year of bad releases. There’s gonna be at least one licensed chapter every year, and even if it’s a reskinned skull merchant, it’s still licensed and there’s gonna be some people happy about it just because of that fact.
My only concern is how big can the game grow without the dev maintenance becoming too much? Every time new killers, survivors and maps are added it’s also new stuff to break and struggle to keep balanced. And when does it become ridiculous how many perks and characters there are in the game to choose from? And when we have all of the big licenses fans want, what then?
Dbd can keep going as long as bhvr want. Idk what it is but I still always get excited about new chapters and as long as they keep occasionally updating gameplay and graphics it will have longevity. The recent UE5 update gets me hyped for their likely plans for quality
I genuinely think that for a game to kill DBD it’d basically have to be DBD. At minimum it would have to have a similar gameplay loop and not be tied to a single IP.
Dbd has monopoly on the genre which made it basically impossible to compete because of how long the game was out and how many licenses it collected. So most definitely no less than 8 years
Taking a break from DBD is what all players should do every once in a while, even if it's for a couple of days or so. Imo, BHVR should also look into doing some small qol and health updates for the game and rework a lot of things (mostly addons and some redundant perks)
I think once there is 50 playable characters on both sides should be considered
i think the game has quite a bit of time left, but that completely depends on what behaviour does. like i REALLY want to play regularly but my laptop cannot handle the new engine and I've been unable to play for a while because of it
At least two years, the game is poppin. 🎉
The game has been going for 8 years and just scored 2 major licensing deals (DND and Castlevania) with the potential of another one in the near future (Friday the 13th). There's also tons more potential for original killers as well. I'd say the game has at least 2 more years before dying.
With new game modes and them opening the diversity of killers/survivors to characters outside of the horror genre, it has a lot of life left. Especially if they eventually go the Left 4 Dead route and let their community create their own mods
you got robbed of that grab on the claudette thats something they need to fix
I think dead by daylight still has a long shelf life, bringing in big IPs that everyone loves such as Stranger Things or Resident Evil, to licenses a bit out there like Dungeons and Dragons and Nicolas Cage. The complexity of the game is honestly fine since people still usually gravitate towards the more simpler characters, but I think the death of Dead by Daylight is more so a point where ideas have been done many many times.
