I've had my 450 17 years now it's 0.7 and it's done around 100k and is looking a little tatty ... No engine rebuild yet 🤞... but I like the car so much i would replace the engine ... it was originally purchased for the pure design ... I just love it 🙏

I've recently bought a 0.7 450 that had an engine rebuild 1k miles ago at 57k miles, so hope it lasts, wonder if it's worth asking about an oil cooler when I take it to a specialist

Hi I have a city coupe 2002 facelift 600cc currently on 86,000 not been rebuilt ,I change the oil every 3000 miles would I be able to buy a reconditioned 700 cc with a oil cooler and would this replace my 600 cc and would the Sam unit run it ok ,do you know where I could get a 700cc reconditioned engine with oil cooler .

The 700cc engines with oil coolers are fitted to the 450 ForTwo Brabus, the Roadster 80bhp and Roadster Brabus so don't tend to be as cheap. It's not just the oil cooler that helps longevity, these engines have a different piston design, different turbochargers, camshafts and fuel injectors so running one of these engines from a 600cc ECU probably isn't going to work too well. Changing the oil regularly (as you are doing) is crucially important to the life of these engines, and another thing to check is the crankcase ventilation one way valve is working. These commonly get stuck open at higher mileage allowing boost pressure into the crankcase which causes leaks and forced oil past the piston rings. The valve is the one at the top/rear of the engine with a hard plastic pipe either side of it, part A1600180312. It is possible to install a conventional oil cooler onto your 600 engine, you need to to fit a spin-on oil filter conversion (e.g.Smartmods or ThinkAuto in the UK) and then you can use a conventional sandwich plate adapter (Mocal SP1) and radiator. It's not as neat as the integrated oil.water cooler though. If you subscribe to Evilution (well worth small amount of money if you do a lot of DIY on your car) then it's all detailed.
