I do know the weight of my MTB, but never once swapped a part on it to save weight... Replace broken stuff with stronger beefier stuff I sure have. For an old cheap aluminum 26er XC bike, it's quite porky @ 15.421kg (~34lbs) - not bad for a rough and tough XC bike that is not used as an XC bike at all.
@The80shilling

19.84 lbs for my Large size Trek Procaliber, with XX1, and I actually made mine heavier; larger rotors, a more comfortable saddle, but got the Vittoria Barzo in the front and the Mezcal in the rear to replace the Bontrager Team issue XR2's, so it now weighs 20.2 lbs.
Keep coming these XC videos!! For lot of years all I can find in YT is techniques from enduro/trail riders with big suspensions that cant compare with my small, ligth wigth, long stem XC bike
Love this Rich. They say , 'to finish first, first you have to finish'. Yea, ditch the tubes.......x
Titanium Casette and rope spokes, full carbon seat and some titanium screws. Could save almost another kilo right there

I have that same bike. 9.5kg Way less expensive and didn’t have to bin so many parts as this build. I bought the pro model. mine has a dropper, runs tubeless. I saved weight with Magura sl mt8 brakes, Garbaruk cassette, bike yoke sl 125 dropper, Cannondale hollow gram cranks with power meter, carbon saddle, 1250g wheels, and conti x-king and race king tires. And I did MyO carbon view gloss, so very little paint weight.

Built a light trail part by part, estimating the weight from the start. I ended up being 1.5lbs different from design weight to actual built. Significantu unexpected weight came from underestimating/underreported brake cables and rotor weights
Wow epic build. Would love a bike like that. I really enjoy the XC content that Rich does.
Can you do the same thing with a hardtail? It would be intresting to see how light you can get that
very lucky to ride a scalpel hi mod with enve wheels post and bar so its around 10kg. biggest gain I had was to drop a stone in weight! chuckle when I see these big lads out and about in the pursuit of grams especially on road bikes.

lol yep I am a hefty dude and people start talking about saving grams here and there, I am just like yeah I don't care about that, I am focusing on where I can lose the most weight off that bike and this is the rider lol.
Really Nice Bike Rich.Look Forward To The Epic Challenges And Races You Got Planned Dude!!!
beautiful bike and very impressive weight. keep this XC content coming pls!
XC is MTB, we need more XC content! Nice bike by the way 21LBS is amazing 👌🏻
Nice build! 👍 I would still go tubeless though for no extra weight. Keep a dropper post (fox transfer sl: 250g extra weight) and change saddle for a Tioga Spyder carbon. Save few grams there and keep it confortable ;) Overall: still sub 10kg with some extras game changer🤘

I'm wondering if tubeless is the same weight. Is it possible for that tube to weigh less than the goop in a tubeless?
@intomlinson
Жыл бұрын
I was thinking the same for tubeless, may be a bit heavier but to me the reliability with that puncture protection tubeless gives you, especially during races would be worth the extra weight
@fillfreakin2245
Жыл бұрын
@@intomlinson Yeah, it would really depend on the terrain. Also with the lighter casing tires, there may be more chance of burping a tire if you go tubeless. That's just a guess though, but if that's the case it would make sense to run tubes.
@neilk22

Dropper posts for XC seems really unnecessary, for enduro and beyond ? no doubt.
@dozloveseme
Жыл бұрын
@@neilk22 I'd say opposite, I use it more on xc trails with constant elevation changes. When I ride enduro trails it's more leaving it up whole climb and then down the whole descent.
Pretty impressive Rich. I know my XC bikes definitely feel light to me and I have some pretty heavy bikes in my line up. I can definitely understand weight saving for your style of racing. I hope it yields the results you're looking for.
I don't know about the tubulitos. The point of being light is presumably to be faster. I'd rather a bit more weight and less chance of punctures as I believe there's nothing slower than having to deal with a puncture. The best use for tubilito IMO is paired with tannus tubed armour - it can be lighter than a tubeless system with an insert and can have some advantages over it.
@echofoxtrott1371
Жыл бұрын
I had those tubolitos on my Mtb and Road Bike! As a spare ok, but I will never run them again over a propper tubeless system! I punctured them so often.. you can‘t go as low on tire pressure as with tubeless. And they are also pretty expensice.
@hanneshertach8013
10 ай бұрын
Tunnus armour adds massive rolling resistance. Tubes + Tannus makes no sense for XC
Thanks for the XC related content!
Saving some grams by running a light innertube is all good on the scale but one flat and your race is over. Tubeless is defiantly a better way to go for a race setup.
My old 26"bike whas stolen . Crbon frame and i pimp that under 7.5kg 27gears xtr m970 ❤ i miss my old frend

I know you just built the bike up, but what about the new SRAM XX Sl drivetrain they just released? Is that any better for xc in terms of weigh?
Great video. XC is the future 😂 Bin the rear suspension for even more gains.

Agree with Stepan, at 85g a tube, sealant and a couple of valves are going to be 20-25g heavier a wheel, and will provide significantly better puncture resistance.
wo0w...I love the upgrades...Thumbs up!!!
The shifters and brakes really made me think about @dangerholm and his incredible builds !
Smashing build, not much scope for any more loss, but can go - Smaller rotors, replace all the steel bolts with Ti, (halve the bolt weight) swap the aluminium valve caps for plastic, trim the bar bung grippers, not sure on the saddle weight, but a full carbon with carbon rails shortie may be lighter? swap the axles for burgtec - possibly squeeze 200 - 250gm from all that
I really love the XC content! Can you make a video about technical XC tips, for example tricky climbs or descents. Since all on KZread I see are those videos but with 160 mm suspension.

My MYO Orbea Oiz 2022 team TR full XTR in a small weighs in at 22.6 lbs stock set up tubeless with XTR pedals.
Got an old 2014 GT Zaskar 9r XC. Added a bafang e-motor and 360w/h battery. 16.8kg total weight.
I have a 2020 Orbea OIZ that weighs around 10.4kg. Complete XTR transmission and brakes, fox kashima fork and socks, dt swiss xrc 1200 with maxxis ikon, fox transfer sl telescopic seatpost. It means the best in terms of reliability and comfort at a reasonable budget

I’m a huge fan on the Raceface next sl wheels, they’re not the lightest, but they’re really stiff

21.40 pounds ! Thats impressive Sir . I'm stuck on the long travel comfort of My 2021 Trek Slash ( aging body and many injuries ).
for some xc camps, i would try to go without rear brake to save 200g, and with tubeless but without selant and with Helio+nitrogen, lighter tyres, lightest suspension, wheels, berd spokes, light hub, etc... could reach maybe 7kg ish?

This is sick Rich! Any weight limits on the components you chose? I'm sure you've seen it, and maybe can't use it because of the rear hose routing, but if you got a Grace stem you could have the blip box inside.
Hey Rich, you really don't need a blip box with all cables as you can use Sram's wireless sprint shifters. You would save another grams and the cockpit would look much cleaner.
My aluminum "diamond back overdrive" is 17lbs. All aluminum, except carbon fork. No dropper, no suspension, and no gears.. like a 29 inch bmx bike .lol.
Same weight as my aluminum full rigid hard tail mountain bike. That's pretty impressive. I wonder how much lower it can go if he had a hard tail frame.

How is the sizing of the orbea xl frame Rich? Thanks
Great video 😃 bike build , that's always fun to watch 😃 my bike weighs about 12 kilos maybe even 13 😬😬
Sick build. The guys from ORBEA x Leatt x Speed Company are at around 10.8kg including a toolkit, and some extras for the CAPE EPIC. I really like the ORBEA bikes. Enjoy man.
As an old school weight weenie I like the build, respect! I think tubeless is still where it’s at though.
Using tubes it’s like stepping back to 26” There’s no good reason to justify tubes, not even weight. EE wing crank could add style.
I would consider some rope spokes and if it's going to be used on some rougher terrain a DT Swiss dropper, they seem to be very lightweight and I believe there's an option for carbon as well? But it's looking great.
Would love to hear some feedback on ride quality and stability. Nice build!
Stunning
Right up my trail - but any weight weenie build must cover £ per gram. And ideally some controlled before and after timed tests please.
Absolutely spectacular, I feel guilty with my polygon trail bike, xc bikes are sweet
I'm pretty sure that orbea stock was already lighter than my oldschool HT xc bike. Especially since I'm running tannus armour in the back wheel with cheap coil rs tora fork.
Love it… a bit disappointed as hoped to see the new AXS drivetrain 😢. But these breaks! Trickstuff is really the edge of technology. Is it possible to buy the old components 😅?

Trickstuff do not "break"...they "brake" lol
Nice build but could've gone lighter; Ti bolts on everything, Schmolke carbon post, there are lighter chainrings available, ditch the valve caps and I'm pretty sure there are lighter stems. Also I'm calling shenanigans on the brakes, the waiting times for Trickstuff parts was huge last time I checked! I'm not saying go full Dangerholm though haha!
this is impressive. I'm plsning on upgradinf my enduro bike and saving 800g of unsprung mass and a total of a bit more than 1kg
Awesome build and beautiful brakes and brake calipers,it's a pity you weren't putting Time ATAC XC12 titanium pedals on,they're look much better than Crankbrothers and are more durable.Safe riding.
I'd like to thank Orbea designers for putting threaded BB in the frame ❤

The best!
Lizard Skins ESP grips over the Ergon (also your bar end plugs were like absurdly long), Selle Italia SLR boost saddle will save you a chunk over the Ergon, The Fox 34 is a bit lighter than the SID and also allows the use of a 160mm front rotor instead of the 180 you have to run on the SID....although you might want to run 180 depending on the course. Resin pads are lighter than the metal whilst we're at it too. Carbon-Ti axles. Carbon-Ti stem cap. Nylon bolts for the bottle cage. etc.

it LOOks nice..
I love nerding out on this stuff, but there's alot of useful information regarding diminishing returns. I.e., for this build, what was the cost/kg to get it from before to after? I may be able to get my bike rockin at 12/11kg for 2500 USD, but to get it to sub 10kg, how much more does that cost a typical consumer? We ain't all sponsored lol. Very much appreciate you guys weighing it with pedals and bottle cages btw. As if XC riders don't use those things.
€2,200 euros for a set of wheels. Just had a look at price for them. "Flippin eck" as we say in Yorkshire. 😊❤
😂😂 not even that light. Some big fails too: Tubed, no dropper, no power meter, lost the function of squid lock in the fork.
My XC bike is fully ridged, carbon everything! Weighs 8.3kg! It’s fast!
Tires seem to be on a heavier side, the chain could be lighter, full-steel brake rotors instead of those with an aluminum spider were a real surprise for me 😂 Tubolitos are cool, but they tend to leak air through the valve and are very prone to punctures with anything slightly sharp inside the wheel. No idea why I commented lol 😂
The e-thirteen xcx race cranks would make it even lighter. They are under 400 g including the chainring.
Tires!! go way lower with schwalbe racing compounds in tubeless x 2.1 / 2.25, cassette throw a garbaruk in there, stem and steerer Ultralight... ~9.0 kg for your bike
Very nice...
odličan!
How much did it cost to replace the parts Bike looks awesome even before the exercise 👍👍👍👍🇦🇺
I was fortunate to live in Madrid when they hosted XC World Cup events in the Caso de Campo. I was able to ride the same course every weekend. The gnarly bits and the downhill sections were pretty rough and I wasn’t taking them with the speed and force of the pros. My question is: If lighter is faster in XC racing, how light is too light to take the pounding of an off road course?
i think Rich should have gone for "Ritchey" grips! :D

Nice gravel bike
I just realized, it’s not a copper chain, it’s a kashima coated chain 🤯 😂
What's the price/kilo saved?
Because the bike was already a pretty top-flight xc bulid at the start, it needed an obscene amount of money just to loose a few kilos. Upgrading a mid-level bike gives a better money-to-weight ratio.
Chromag steel Rootdown with heavyweight assegai tires, 170mm fork... I'm better off not knowing.
