Thanks for sharing! It really sucks how the LGBTQ+ community has to deal with that shame and insecurity not because of their inherently insecure, but because our general society is actually insecure. To all of the people saying "let's keep surfing out of gender politics, etc" you're missing the point. It's great that we're finally getting to this mindset as a society but for the most part, the surfing community has traditionally been extremely homophobic. Why do you think most of us are afraid to come out in the first place? As a gay surfer/skater who grew up in the 90s, I can assure you that the absolute worst thing you could be in those days was gay. You'd be lucky to find any surfers that would accept you. I never did. As a result, I surfed alone. I had plenty of gay friends but I was the only one who surfed. While I agree it should not be our defining characteristic, to say "it doesn't matter, why are we even talking about it" is a way of stripping that characteristic away from us. It does matter as a part of who we are. Otherwise, they wouldn't be doing interviews about it. It's a part of the history of the sport. We just want respect, nothing else. For all the homophobic comments: GET A LIFE! If you're not gay, why do you care so much? Do your thing. Go surf. Whatever.

Maybe the surf community hasn’t had an impact on your identity cause you’re straight and fit the social norms ? There are lots of people that feel like they have to act a certain way and can’t be themselves or be ostracised and that can lead to suicidel depression. Lots of people don’t realise there are others struggling with the same thing and we can help each other work through the issues. You say you don’t care but then why don’t you want people discussing it ?

I'm an old guy from Down Under surfed all my life, still surfing. There has never been a time when I've been interested in anyone's sexuality surfer or not. It's not my business. To be honest I don't find that sort of information about a person to be interesting. Apart from the odd yobbo the vast majority of surfers felt the same as I did. Yes there was a lot of testosterone on display in surfing something I'm still not fussed about, it's boring to be frank. However wrt to women in surfing, there has always been women, some of them lesbian, in surfing it's no big deal they have always been there which is cool by me. The difference now is professional surfing changed the whole thing. With the onset of surf media and contests surfing was stolen as a life style and became big business. As soon as the idea occurred that women were an untapped market, professional women's surfing events began in earnest. Like the men's contests the women's circuit is a corporate vehicle to sell fashion and market other products as well. Not that I justify it but from that moment, image was everything because the pitch was to a certain demographic. Beautiful, young and main stream and perhaps by default hetero too, that's the money. As far as I could tell it was more about the rush for bucks than any all pervasive anti gay sentiment. Sadly there will always be an anti man or an anti woman or anti gay or anti straight sentiment in a small minority of people, surfers included. Let's leave them to their "exclusive" little world and we'll surf on leaving that sort of us and them attitude on the beach. Yew

Lets try and keep radical left (oppressed vs oppressor) views away from surfing, ae? Surfing is something I do to get away from all the noise people are making in society, be it because of genuine concern or performative virtue signalling. The last things we need are watersports companies bowing the these fashionable ideologies to market products. And even with surfing culture taken out of the equation, involving your view points in every part of other peoples lives will only divide us further, regardless of whether your arguments are well thought out, or quite often, flimsy and visceral.

@@figglebop surfing has always been an exclusive sport but not exclusive to gender or sexual preference it has more to do with competitive nature of the sport. There are always more surfers than premium waves and surf spots. Growing up in CA everyone is wearing a black wetsuit we all look like half submerged seals. You can barely determine you sex let alone your preference. If you stay with in the limits of your surfing ability you are fine. If you can prove that belong there with your abilities you will gain respect. Follow the unwritten rules they are for everyone's safety.
