The "starting point" thing sounds dumb, but it's weirdly true for a lot of elements in these games. So many times, they experiment with something in one game, where it's kind of halfbaked, then maybe it becomes a full thing in the next one. That's going as far back as Gen1's Yellow version, which had Pikachu adhere to a happiness system before Gen2 fully implemented it for all mons. Gen4 and 5 marked the start of experiments with 3D models before they eventually HAD to commit to 3D in Gen6. But Gen6 still was largely grid-based, save for the skates, before GF finally committed to actual 3D movement in Gen7. Then, the wild area was a first half-step into a player controlled camera (I know, wild) before they committed to THAT in Legends. I'm unfortunately pretty susceptible to skinner box design, so I have my fair share of fun with games designed around it, but these annoying half-steps that always feel like starting points for something that might get fleshed out in the next game IS extremely frustrating, especially since the amount of player choice is decreasing game by game (I love the Control Freak joke, btw). I fully blame lack of staff and time for this. I love to draw and I especially love to design my own monsters. Sugimori basically has my dream job and I love his art. When I was a kid, I wanted to work at Gamefreak at some point, and when I first heard an American was on the team in Gen5, I was actually excited (I'm from Europe, but still, non-japanese in japanese company). I dropped that dream completely over the years, the more it started to sink in how insane the Pokemon schedule is.

Honestly, I've always felt like Pokémon was a game series that game the players certain types of choices, but not nearly enough, mainly in the story. I get it, the games are primarily for kids, so you don't want Fallout levels of choice where you can join team rocket and steal other peoples Pokémon, but would it kill Gamefreak to make it so you don't have arbitrary roadblocks so I can play how I want? If a player wanted to play as a breeder and not a trainer, give an option and story for that. Want to play as a contest coordinator? Give an option for that too.

HONESTLY! YES! My friend and I have been saying this for years! It always seemed like the next logical step; was to bring in more choices to what kind of Pokemon trainer you were. The battle tower, pokemon contests, and pokeathlon were just begging to be fleshed out more. There is no way 100% of all players want to rp as "the bestest pokemon master there ever was" for. Every. Single. Game. My friends and I were hyped to see what new way to play they would add in the next game... and we slowly realized with disappointment that instead of expanding the pokemon world; they removed those features that had brought so much life to the game.

I never got the "GOTTA CATCH THEM ALL" aspect of pokemon, I enjoy building a unique team for the job. Just going around and mindlessly catching every type of pokemon sounds really fucking boring, especially if the only way to do so is by doing the exact same thing over and over again. It wasn't fun in the original games and it doesn't look fun here.

Goddamn this was a really interesting analysis. I especially loved the segment on how bad graphics do mean a bad game, it's a really cool explanation on how it really does matter that your game looks the best it can. Another banger of a video. Running around a world "full" of pokemon, dodging attacks, and throwing pokeballs at wild pokemon felt like a dream come true that the child version of me fantasied about. For the first several hours I honestly had a blast. But after that effect wore off, and the game was feeling more and more repetitive, I got bored and dropped it. I still haven't gone back to finish it. It's just so hard to believe that an open world pokemon game feels like less of an adventure than the older games did.

The most exciting part of arceus for me was catching an eevee. I loved eevees so I naturally I must have at least on in every game I play. So while I'm wandering around in the first area, I spot an eevee, AND IT RUNS AWAY AND DESPAWNS. I spend another 45 minutes searching for it (eevees are really rare and don't spawn often in the first area). That was for some reason so much fun.

IMPORTANT: This video Isn't meant to invalidate any of the fun you might've had with this game. I enjoyed some of my time with this game too. But I can't agree with the majority of the narrative that surrounds this game. I think it's important for a video like this to exist that wasn't made day one the game was released when everyone was still caught up in the new features. PLA Is a game with a lot of problems that sums up the modern approach to Pokémon and I think that's sad. This video doesn't spend a lot of time gushing over what the game does really well because that's already been said to death. So It feels more negative than it should be lmao Either way even if you don't agree I hope there's at least entertainment value you can get from it or at least something to think about. Thank you for watching and please tell me your reasoning for why you liked the game if you did, I'm curious.

I thought this was a very interesting review that doesn't come off has samey! I personally really adore PLA (Even now), but mainly because it was a unique take on Pokémon we're not everybody was on good terms with the creatures while simultaneously giving more context to Sinnoh. The story is basically a recreation of the colonization of Enzo, and both the tribes ( culture vultures from other regions) alongside the Galaxy team represent which is why Volo ( the Ainu representative) it's so who has an antagonist, because he's essentially a indigenous person lashing out at how his culture has been taken from him. None of this is really spelled out for you, and you have to find this out by exploring and finding the Old Verses via Ursaluna. I also like your analysis of the choices of the older Pokemon games. IMHO, a lot of those choices don't really mean anything because the titles "even back then", never required us to go the extra mile when it came to battling. All the game really requires for you is to have high level Pokemon and essentially just one of them can move through the entire game by themselves. Even when it comes to battles against Cynthia it's basically just a power struggle between who can hit the hardest, and the same can be said about Lance and the other. champions of the games. I've been playing Pokemon since 1999, and this is essentially the same formula over and over again. So the choices that you make ultimately lead to the same linear path because you're trying way harder than the NPCs 95% of the time. The traditional core games essentially follow that same structure where you pick a starter, build the team around them, and then proceed to massacre everything. If I were to run a sunny day Venusaur team, it wouldn't really do much but just help me Overkill the game quicker because my opponents aren't utilizing the same tactics that a competitive player would be doing. All this and more is what makes many of the older titles and even some of the current more traditional games feel so drab. PLA ( despite its cons) was the first game in the main series to take a different approach and focus more on the catching aspect while giving it a new coat of paint since it's a prequel of DPP set in a time before people and Pokemon care for each other like they do nowadays. It can stand on its own, but it really does put a lot of things that were foreshadowed and the generation 4 games into prospective. I'm so sorry for this essay lolol, but I hope my rambling makes any amount of sense and thank you for a such a Polish video that allowed me to really put my thoughts into perspective

  • @Cassidyhunt

No thank you for writing that! hearing the story be explained like that, sounds much more interesting. I really wish they leaned into that and made it front and centre. It terms of choices, I do and don't agree. While the games aren't hard enough to force you to play competitively. If you aren't exploring and over leveling your pokemon you definitely need to apply some level of strategy to beat the games. Doing what you say by picking a starter and building a team around them Is one choice that doesn't account for how other players might use different choices. Yes using a sunny day venusaur team could be overkill but that's a choice you make. I personally prefer the idea of using "tanky" grass types with poison powder and Giga drain while holding leftovers. Because I find that strategy fun while someone else might enjoy using sunny day to completely demolish trainers. While you're not strictly forced to use competitive strategies, having more choices lets each player tailor the game to be as much fun as they want it to be. The massive amount of choices also make the games much more re-playable. You could apply this argument to PLA as well but the choices are so limited it doesn't have the same effect. Either way I completely understand the need for something fresh from Pokemon. Thank you for all the kind words and I really enjoyed reading your comment! :)

@@Cassidyhunt Thank you! I do appreciate the customization of the core Pokemon titles, but I feel like the games never scale or grow with you. The Pokemon Colosseum games feature bosses that use competitive teams and strategies that will make quick work of anybody who's not prepared. Mirror B utilizes a rain dance team with Ludicolo that have Swift swim and Rain dish which also nullifies the damage of his Sudowoodo. Dakim utilizes the protect plus earthquake strategy and rocks a Entei. Meanwhile in DPP, I can use my overpowered Infernape to essentially Speed Run the games and even the toughest battles are basically just one of might. In a perfect world, Nintendo and GF would use the core Pokemon games as a breeding ground for competitive by showcasing how creative and diverse the strategies could be akin to Coliseum and XD. However, they just keep on reiterating with the same starter triangle, stock gym leaders, and antagonist that grow more and more deranged yet never receive any consequences. I also think that the reason Legends has garnered so much acclaim is because debatably it's the biggest jump the series has seen since gold and silver. Most of the other titles have felt like reiterations that add a couple of things to make them stand out. PLA is certainly not a revolution in the grander gaming sphere, before the series it definitely is ( this doesn't excuse any perceived criticisms but does say a lot about how the series has remained stagnant). Goodness though, I would love to just have a chat with you on a podcast or something because I feel like you have such a fresh perspective!

Honestly I loved the game but I guess not everyone will agree I did not like the battle system and the removal of abilities and held items but besides that this is my favorite Pokemon game of ALL TIME it used to be BW2 but honestly I put the most hours in it of any game in the series I loved the innovations like being able to change moves in the party the move learner in Zisu was great and evolving in the party was great no need for a eviolite now and I never got bored of catching some times I will spend hours running around catching Pokemon a lot of your points were valid but I clearly had a different experience with it and loved freeze being changed to a SPA version of will-o wisp does anyone else agree? Edit:Sorry for the grammer issues this is not my first language I have fixed the spelling mistakes I became aware of.

This video honestly puts my thoughts into words, because honestly when the game came out I was so excited for it! I originally wasn't a big Sinnoh player (Heartgold was better in my opinion) but when I went to play this game I was hoping to get a new enjoyment for the games. I eventually forgot about the game after playing it a little bit. And when I found out I was confused why. Bu this right here perfectly explains why I love the older games compared to these new ones. There is a reason why these fangames are so popular and sought after nowadays. I am nervous for Scarlet and Violet and for the first time I actually haven't preordered the game. I will say the textures on the pokemon in those new games look better I believe though. but I am honestly hoping to see something worthwhile to get my excitement back up.

you described my experience PERFECTLY: it is exactly like marriage - I loved the game until the final fight with Volo and then... I just kind of realized all of the flaws with the game and stopped playing! I had a great time but... it's that kind of "great time" where you only get to have fun once... I don't believe Pokemon will ever be *truly* good, it'll only ever be at the verge and then back out at the last second. n' you wanna know why? it's because if they make a game that is *TRULY GREAT,* they won't be able to make mediocre games that sell great anymore as they'll finally have to comply with the standards that they've set for themselves!!!... or, maybe that's wishful thinking, Pokemon might be Too Big To Fail™. also, STOP LYING TO ME! LIAR LIAR PANTS ON FIRE! Heart Been Broke So Many Times, I Don't Know What To Believe™ EDIT: by the way, this is the best video I've seen in months!

1 step forward - straight into a wall XD Couldn't describe it better. Pokémon lost its heart, with the lack of art and passion it contains these days. To quote a german youtuber, companies don't want the best for you, but the best u got - your money. Sadly true usually..

I really don't think PLA is a "starting point," but I do think it's a step in the right direction after SwSh. I do have problems with it, but I honestly really enjoy the gameplay loop of throwing balls at Pokémon while throwing my Pokémon at resources. I think the quests should be interesting, and I think there should be more things to go, but I think this is at least a good game. It's nothing great, but it's pretty good.
