the irony of it all was that had Mclaren given Piastri a fully updated Mclaren too, then Piastri would not have gotten into a fit with Sainz, which saw him end up in the back in the field, and Mclaren would have had a high chance of wheeling in a 1-2 in Miami, with Piastri winning the GP and Norris being told to not risk throwing away a 1-2, and stay behind Piastri, and he surely would have tried and would have been painted as 'sore' and clearly beaten by a rookie. Had Piastri had the same updated car, he would have overtaken Verstappen within 15 laps, and the whole tactics would have been different, which even if a SC have happened the 'same way', Piastri would have been P1 and at best Norris lucked with a P2 instead of overtaking the Ferrari's and RedBulls to get there. But it would again have been Norris NOT winning and his teammates did. Ricciardo, only recently at Mclaren then, WON a race, not Norris. Oscar Piastri WON a race - even if it's a sprint race - before Lando got anywhere close. Both Ricciardo and Piastri have been proven to beat him, and looking at Piastri this year and last year, he IS faster than Norris. Considering how Piastri drove before he ruined it by the Sainz incident, Lando would not have been able to even overtake Piastri's lesser updated Mclaren, let alone if he had the same updates. The true shame is that Mclaren did not have a fully updated Mclaren for Piastri. It would have been, guaranteed, no doubts, a 1-2 for Mclaren with Piastri P1 (his second win) and Norris P2 (another fail to win).

Been watching him since his F1 debut in 2019. I legit cried during the final laps of Sochi 2021. When he finally won at Miami it basically left me high on happiness for the rest of the week. The only other times I felt that amount of happiness after an F1 race was when Gasly won the 2020 Italian GP and Perez won the 2020 Sakhir GP (yes, I'm a relatively new fan of the sport). It's wins like these that keep me invested in the sport despite the dominant periods and the boring races.

As you are relatively new watching this sport: Avoid looking only for who would win! A rounds-long battle for 13th is as exciting as a battle for 3rd, 2nd or 1st, the only thing that differs is the points in the end (which aren't that interesting in the short term). In the Mercedes-Era I watched as if the 3rd was the winner, the 4th second place, ... a win for another team than Mercedes was like a tripple-jackpot for me! Then there's the celebration of points for any underdog-team that doesn't score that often. In Soccer-WMs I root for countries like Uruguay, Costa Rica, Japan, ... for example.

@@kamukameh speaking words of truth. 🙏 Nowadays I divert my attention to what's going on in the midfield rather than in the leading pack. It's more exciting to keep track of, and all the more so when you get an unusually good result from one of the usual midfield residents. Even Zhou finishing his home GP put a smile on my face. Didn't even need to score points, just his home crowd cheering him on was enough.

I wish I'd seen Checo win Sakhir live. 2021 was my first season of watching races live, and while I've watched it multiple times since, it isn't the same. My favorite live race was Interlagos 2023. I never thought I'd see a photo finish live; Checo v. Alonso for 3rd was more exciting than any battle for the win I've ever seen.

@kamukameh Exactly. The most exciting battle I've ever seen was Interlagos '23 for third (that photo finish...). Over the last few seasons, we've seen so many incredible battles in the bottom ten, and incredible moves all through the field. Teams celebrating a few points as though they've won hits me where I live (Williams at Hungary '21 🥹) I'm glad the lower places are getting attention during the races. There are always bright spots during dominance in the sport.

Anytime you have those expectations, that's what people are going to compare you to and when you make mistake after mistake in big moments you're going to hear it. That is a very interesting proposition. Max lost around 0,1 second per lap due to the floor damage, and Lando was lapping faster than him before the SC. That said, Max IS the Dutch Minister of Defense when needed, and Lando's overtaking game is just not at "overtaking Max mid-turn" level yet. So there could have been the long DRS straight for overtaking if Lando had the full focus (he had it in the lead, steadily pulling away from Max and the rest), without a mistake he could have taken the opportunity. I really DO hope we see this level of racecraft and action in Imola. Max & Lando doing proper racing would be a blaaast to watch.

With that single win now added to all his other podiums he becomes one of the most successful British drivers. Obviously we have a few world champions but it just proves, he was doing just fine before and this hopefully is the springboard towards Button, Hill’s, Stewart and Mansell territory. If Lando beats Lewis’ records I think we need to start drug testing him twice a week.

The only thing I think was missing from this analysis was the impact of the tyre compounds. Sprint qualifying has mandatory sets; mediums in SQ1 and 2, softs in SQ3. Lando topped both the medium sessions, but fell back when the red stripes were bolted on. Then come qualifying proper, he took a gamble in Q3 of running another set of mediums for his first run; IIRC an error meant the lap wasn’t exactly representative, and there was no point in trying again on mediums, as it would only be costing him potential race sets, as well as not using the Q3-exclusive soft set. Again, the performance was there, even if overshadowed somewhat by the overall result in qualifying. But they don’t hand out points for where you start, and with the race an all-but nailed-on one-stop, being able to make the most of the harder compounds would be extremely important. The fact that he was able to take his tyres those few laps longer from the start - to make decent speed without burning them out too quickly, even if it was at a slight cost in the moment on pure pace - ended up putting him in the window to have a shot at the win. And this time, he closed the deal.

776 people have raced in F1. 215 have gotten a podium.....114 have won a race..... Lando is one of them now. Imagine being the best of the best....just to drive in F1. Pinnicle of racing. Only 20 or so get to race in the fastest race cars in the world every year. And even just for 1 race, being able to say you bested the best. Hopefully well get to see more of McLaren this season at the top (well hopefully we see anyone other than Max at the top lol), but even if it never happens again for Lando....he's got one. And that's more than 662 drivers have been able to say......but also that's more than 7 billion people in this world can say. Pretty damn impressive.

It seems obsurd now, but after China 2007, there were those who doubted Hamilton's ability to clinch a title, given that there was a wide open chance for him to secure a title in his rookie season, but due to staying out too long on heavily worn intermediate tyres and happening to get beached on the only pit entry gravel trap in F1, it looked to some like the pressure for him to succeed crumbled him. It was nonsense, it was his fricking rookie season and nobody would have expected him to do what he did. I thought though, and I stand by this, it's easy to say that a driver is fortunate to get into a championship contending car, even harder to go against the reigning double World Champion (at the time) Fernando Alonso and have the glare and scrutiny of the world's press on your back every single week. Yes, later in his career, it got boring to see Hamilton winning 6 titles in 8 years (7 in total so far), but that doesn't and shouldn't take away from the remarkable debut season he had in 2007

1:20 "NOR made the call himself..." I hate this wrong impression people have. So many F1 content creators keep adding to the storyline that Lando made the call to stay on slicks, or that he refused McLaren's call to box, but in reality, he was never asked to box, they only asked him what he thought about the intermediates, at the time he was asked, the slicks were the right tyre to be on, so he said "no". HAM stayed out the first time Mercedes called him to pit for exactly the same reason, HAM only boxed once Mercedes told him there was another bank of rain coming. McLaren didn't see more rain on the radar or they didn't provide this information to NOR, hence the outcome of the final few laps. F1 fans might see a catchy headline that blames a driver and believe it, but it's reasonable to expect more research from F1 content creators, pundits and journalists.

One interesting thing about the Sochi race aftermath - you can hear on the radio the mclaren team now have a way of communicating about the weather and upcoming rain so that if this sort of thing happened in the future, the drivers would have a clear picture of how much rain there is going to be so they can make better decisions. it hasn't come in useful yet but I was a bit mystified hearing it on the team radio and then the commentators on sky being completely confused (iirc even a bit mocking) at how they were communicating. it shows to me that both the team and lando are always looking to improve and learn from mistakes. i'm not surprised he managed to crack the top spot on a race weekend now, lando and mclaren have only been on the up for the past few seasons (although the reg change initially really hurt)

I'm so happy for Lando, he really deserved it. Let's not forget that for 20 laps or so Oscar was keeping pre-bollard Max honest with half of their upgrades. Have McLaren really found something, or was it one of those odd races where the car and conditions are just perfect? I hope for many more wins in the future. The sad fact is that this was only the team's second win since the last race of 2012 (plus one sprint). But their form is looking strong.

Max's first win - if the Mercs hadn't taken each other out... Hakkinen's first win - if Schumacher hadn't damaged Villeneuve's car & Coulthard hadn't been given the order to let him past... The point being, any number of great drivers got "lucky" in their first win in particular (no one remembers later "lucky wins"). Virtually every one-time winner had luck in bucketfuls. Compare Lando's win to the first timers and the one-offs, and his win reminds me far more of the first ones. Sometimes you've got to have a bit of luck 🤷🏻‍♀️

Safety cars have always changed races as Josh said...I mean look at Max's first WDC and how the safety car potentially changed the outcome there. Luck, being in the right place, having the speed and skill to hold on....sure Lando was in the right place at the right time and was lucky they F'ed up the safety car but at the end of the day he won the race - job done!

Yes, luck played a role, but luck _always_ plays a role, and as a wise man once said, "you make your own luck." The team is executing well enough, both Lando and Oscar are driving well enough, and the car is performing well enough that they can take advantage of those little chances that, in previous years, wouldn't have resulted in anything. Yeah, Max hadn't been comfortable all weekend and his car was injured; he still came in 2nd. Yeah, the safety car made a mistake; Lando was still able to pull away from Max when the green flag waved. Lando and McLaren weren't handed this win on a plate; they were handed an _opportunity_ to win, but had to take advantage of that opportunity to beat both Max and Charles. Would I prefer to see Lando beat Max (or anyone else) in a straight-up fight where everyone's car is healthy and the track stays clear? You betcha. But IMO this is just as good.

IMO, if the safety car had been called any earlier, Norris would’ve had time to go straight into the pits anyway. It only happened this way because the safety car was called as he was going past the pit entry. So unless the pit crew royally screwed up, he would’ve come out ahead of Max either way.

Sochi 2021 for Lando Norris will go down in history as what Sakhir 2020 was for George Russell. What could've been the biggest what-if, ended up being the making of each driver when they finally got their first win. As a fan of both drivers, who sat through both heartbreaks AND both maiden wins...something about Sochi 2021 hurt even more. It was a split-second error, one that both Lando AND Lewis could've made - the only difference was the Merc pit wall DEMANDED Hamilton come in. If it had been solely up to him, he would've probably stayed out with Lando. But genuinely, that day just felt like my heart being ripped out of my chest. And then having to listen to every dumbass on social media going 'derp lando nowins bottlejob derpy doo' every week, made it even more insufferable. That's what made this win so special. I don't care that luck and safety car timing played a part - you think Lewis or Max or anyone else has NEVER EVER not once benefitted from some luck and good timing? Ever? Its racing, its the nature of the beast. And besides, after Abu Dhabi '21, I don't think any Verstappen fans have any right to moan about the timing of a safety car favouring one driver over another... 😉 But genuinely, I'm just delighted for Lando. Its not like he scraped home to win a fluke either - he outdrove the best driver in the sport and left everyone in his dust those final 15-20 laps. Smoked 'em. And seeing how happy everyone in the garage was for him, including everyone else on the grid like George, his old teammates Ricciardo and Sainz, even his buddy Max, was just...so heartwarming. Couldn't be happier. So long as we ignore the whole business of his team boss inviting a disgraced former US president into their garage pre-race to take pictures with him, & then somehow take credit for him winning afterwards...lets just pretenr that didn't happen hey? 😅🤮

Lando's still getting some heat for winning under the safety car. A while back, Max' first WDC had heavy influence from the safety car but was able to make up for this by winning the WDC again. I know we're not talking about the WDC, but it's the same logic. Hope Lando can win again, cleanly, so he can make his critics zip it.
