How Korra Found Her Identity: Korra vs Imposter Syndrome (Avatar: Legend of Korra Analysis)

Фильм және анимация

The Legend of Korra's narrative tackles one core concept with its protagonist: imposter syndrome. Putting all the pieces of the puzzle together, how did Korra overcome the trials and tribulations that accompanied Amon, Unalaq, Zaheer & Kuvira and find her own identity that separates her from the Avatar before her?

I appreciate this video. It gives a good and fair analysis of Korra instead of “she’s not Aang, she’s whinny and bratty and her story sucks.” But of course she’s not Aang. He was a 12 year old who didn’t have a chance to grow up before he had to save the world. Korra didn’t have that pressure. She is a totally different person. I like her as a character because she’s not just another Aang. While I love the ATLA characters, the LOK characters have different personalities shaped by different adversities, which is why the character development of the shows are so good.

This is so true. I usually get so tired of people who say "ATLA was so much better. Korra is trash because she wasn't like Aang and she was kind of annoying" but I see it as Korra is her own person and if she was like Aang I probably wouldn't have liked it as much. I love Korra as a character and think that she was very realistic.

Korra does suck ALOT but not because she's not Aang.....Though I've never actually seen anyone say that before so that's a first. I do see people compare her to Aang and for good reason. oh and story does suck. And this is coming from someone who desperately wanted to like this show. I did like it but then they continued it after book 1.....and I could no longer defend it. I don't don't even like book 1 anymore. Went and re-watched it and realized a lot of idiotic stuff that I didn't notice the first time. ATLA was better ALOT better then the Legend of Korra. It was a huge disappointment.

Merui you can have that opinion. However, most people I’ve seen criticize the show do so because they don’t like that the story isn’t as “epic” as ATLA, that Korra isn’t like Aang and she’s just a older brat. My point is that the creators weren’t try ping to make another ATLA. Of course the story isn’t the same because the threats Korra handles aren’t about saving the entire world. If they had tried to make it like Last Airbender, people would have been just as upset if not moreso then they are at what Legend of Korra ended up as.

All I'll say is this: Korra is not Aang, but she and her show were still good. For both ATLA and ATLOK, I felt the shows got better with each Season. Both characters had flaws, but by the end of their series they had both had developed a lot. And the action was always fun to watch and it was cool seeing the world change from 1 generation to the next. Sure, Korra wasn't perfect, but I'm glad it was a good follow up to Aang.

Last Air Bender was about "becoming the Avatar", Legend of Korra is about "what IS the Avatar?", which was a much smarter angle to take instead of just repeating what the predecessor had already done. Beyond the backstory in Book 2 showing the origin of the Avatar, all the villains in Korra opposed the idea of the Avatar existing for different reasons and Korra always had ot reafirm that the Avatar is still a necessity in the world.

It does have fantastic ideas, but I’m not entirely sold on how some of them were handled. The show kinda rushes through certain moments that are suppose to be the big emotional culmination of everything leading up to them. Like Korra getting Kuvira to stand down. I get what the writers were going for there, given the earlier scene of Toph lecturing Korra about how her past enemies were well intentioned but misguided people. However, I don’t think Kuvira would give up that quickly after everything we’ve learned about her as a character. Her whole thing was that she wanted to remove figures like Suyin and Wu from positions of power and take their place because she thought thought they weren’t fit to run things, and that was arguably true. One quick heart to heart with Korra is enough to convince her to surrender everything to the people she deemed would run the earth kingdom into the ground? It would be one thing if Korra promised Kuvira that she’ll make sure that her hard work doesn’t get completely undone, but that didn’t happen. At least not onscreen.

She wrecks a streets. Crashes men and cars into buildings, and yeah she was defending people- but at what cost exactly? Let's see, with each house/shop she broke, she: Ensured they would need to repair the building. Prevented them from making more money. Put them into a position financially that may put them out of business. Endangered civilians (imagine if people had been inside those buildings near where the cars entered. The police were shown as the bad guys to Korra, but she deserved it. Also her mentors did her a huge disservice by not teaching her such basic things. There were no consequences for those actions she took. She also was so easily manipulated by everyone who wasn't a child/mentor. @@pmy643 I’m personally of the opinion that both fans and detractors aren’t always very accurate when talking about this show. Fans say that Korra is the avatar in a world that doesn’t want one when that’s only partly true. Whenever people reject Korra it’s usually because she’s failed to meet their expectations. Like with the spirit vine situation at the beginning of book 3 which leads to her banishment from republic city. But otherwise, folks generally seem to expect her to just wave a wand and solve all their problems, like how the press conferences in book 1 were imploring her to do something about the equalist situation, and the aforementioned spirit vine thing. Not to mention how Korra’s low approval ratings in the city are pretty much gone after she saves the day in the book 3 finale.

Legend of Korra changed my life. As an adult woman watching this series it made me understand my own personal journey. I think people who watch this show hadn’t gone through self discovery journey in their own lives and it speaks to their dislike of the show. The background of what the show runners were dealing with for them to still pull off this epic journey that helped others discover what pain and suffering looks like and how empathy is what the world need rather than just brut strength and power was a great story. Don’t apologize for liking what you like!

@@SchwickFAFO I am going to be honest, one of the reasons why I have always liked Korra is because she isn't likable. There are so many shows where the main character is likable to the point they could vomit rainbows. I love shows like Atla, Steven Universe, and Spongebob. These shows main characters were always likable and they thrived in it, they never had to be anything but it, but Korra was different. She was unlikable because she was hotheaded, she overestimated herself and she seemed more eager to embrace her role as the avatar than actually figure out what it meant to be the avatar. I also have to admit that Korra's character development is amazing. It's realistic and is able to touch on what's important to her to development without feeling out of place. Korra has MANY FLAWS, but it is still one of my favourite shows and while I love Atla I have to say I love Korra a bit more (just the tiniest bit). P.S. I have always had a bit of a preference for flawed movies and series (flawed doesn't equal bad).

This is the best analysis of Korra I have ever seen! Korra easily gets demonized as spoiled, bratty, arrogant Failure by the more toxic area of the Avatar Fandom. But these people completely ignore her upbringing and her journey. Like you said, Aang grew up as Aang, he had his own identity, he could travel the world and grew spiritually and then found out he's the Avatar, but he didn't wanna deal with this new responsibility that's overwhelming to him. Korra grew up isolated, knowing from a very young age, she's the Avatar and the Avatar only, training all day long for mastering the elements in the southern water tribe, so she never had a chance to build a stable identity on her own and she over identified herself with her avatar role. I think Korra's journey is the journey of a typical teenager, where you grew up in a protected household, and then finally get thrown into the real world and you have to find your own identity/your own place in this world that has high expectations of her, while being very confident of herself and thinking as all teenagers, she already knows everything about life. So the villains, season by season take something away of Korra that she thinks make an avatar (Bending all 4 Elements, Spiritual Connection with her past Life's, Strength), it's about making her question about what makes the avatar. While Aang is prepubescent child, that just wants to enjoy his childhood and doesn't wanna deal with these new scary responsibilities he gets thrown into as he grows up, so he is extremely insecure about his own abilities and thinks he's too weak as result of that. Aangs Story is about becoming the Avatar and accepting this responsibility.

The justification Zozin and later Ozai used - they just wanted to share their successes with the world - was very thin and unrealistic. That was not their motivation that just turned out badly. To share achievements they didn‘t need to conquer the world. Their justification was rather a bad excuse for their already flawed ideology. In the end there is a difference if you‘re an asshole/ evil communist or an asshole/ evil fascist, at least in the real world. The show just depicts it in that very centristic way (except that the hero‘s side is immune to every assholery or evilness).

If only LOK didn’t rush the shit out of certain plot lines. Like Tenzin’s issues that have been plaguing him for most likely decades getting alleviated by a vision of his father simply telling him you should stop trying to be me, ok? A longer conversation between those two would have been nice. Same goes for Kuvira’s turnaround at the end. She surrenders everything to the people she deemed would run the earth kingdom into the ground just because she had a quick heart to heart with someone who claims she also knows what it’s like to feel helpless and not in control.

  • @064razor

I enjoyed the video, but I think imposter syndrome is much more fitting with someone like Tenzin. Someone like Korra is a lot like a sheltered child stuck in their comfort zone, which reminds me of Steven. Steven in early SU was completely secluded and sheltered to such an extent, he didnt even know what books were untill he became 14. By the time he actally does exit his comfort zone and things arent as he thinks they are, hes all shaken on how woefully unprepared he is a lot like Korra was. One of the things on why people see Korra as a bad character is her stubbornness and arrogance. Her traits are like those you'd find for villains in other anime where they have lots of power and confidence, but lose their minds once the illusion of them being unstoppable is broken. It doenst make for a relatable character and makes her look like a brat spoiled by fate. To also note a 3rd trait on why people end up disliking Korra as a character is her incompitence. Those who really want to suceed are denied as she's beaten time and time again by not swarms and hordes of enemies, but singular benders as she tries her hardest. Her greatest failure that causes her to get heat is allowing raava to die at the hands of her uncle. Its not a big issue she tries to fight her issues, but it is when there's problems that can only br faught and she cant cut it. Its unwatchable for someone who truely wants to see her win get completely trashed, stomped, beaten, and broken and when she gets back on her feet, she still struggles to protect those she cares about. I dont mind the concept of korra being humbled, but I dont exactly enjoy the idea of it becominf a regular thing per arc. In conclusion, i think she could of been written better. Even though people say its "retready" I think korra would benefit lots by mentors who gave life advice and philosophy that korra could use for self beterment.

Personally I enjoyed Korra more than Aang. Yes, Avatar the airbender has a better story, better built characters and better plot overall, but I enjoyed Korra more. Unlike most people I didn’t have that nostalgia for Aang, I didn’t watch it as a kid. I watched Avatar Korra before I watched Avatar the last airbender. When it came to Korra I related to her. Someone who lived in an limited range of movement who had great potential suddenly have ptsd, depression and anxiety when they are faced with the problems that they weren’t taught how to deal with. Grown people bringing her down. She was a young women, she was a hot head, she wasn’t straight, she dealt with things with her fists first. And well I am a young women, I am hotheaded, I am pansexual and I sometimes can’t deal with fine things like emotion because truthfully I find it easier to fight despite my intelligence that everyone seems to praise, but I feel less and less compelled to it. I don’t have my own identity even now, beyond my mental health issues and my “talents” and I don’t feel what I have is enough. I have never had real relationship and my friendship bonds from grade school and kindergarten were all... fake.. so I’m high school I had to start reinventing myself. Finding a way to be something. I still struggle. My mind still can’t accept the fact that someone wants to hang out with me even with nothing to gain. I still have weeks and weeks that I’m just tired and can’t even study while I struggle with grades and I say I don’t have time, but the truth is I don’t have the energy. So yeah. I like Korra more than Aang. Aang is an amazing character, and he is like my mother. I simply couldn’t carry her legacy much like Korra can’t seem to do with Aang’s

@@venusgin7779 Zuko’s the character I relate to the most, being people that feel awful for hurting those that have supported us, but that’s not the main reason why I like him as a character. His arc of realizing that everything he thought wanted for so long doesn’t bring him any real happiness because it goes against who he really is was very well done. In one episode in season three where he tells Iroh that he did the right thing siding with Azula he’s really just trying to convince himself of that. And when that doesn’t work he gets even more upset. Zuko going through this denial phase and slowly realizing that everything he spent his life trying to achieve especially his father’s approval wasn’t worth it in the end is not an easy process for him, as I imagine it wouldn’t be for a lot of people. Leaving everything you’ve ever known behind to join with a bunch of people that hate you takes a lot of balls.

When watching with people who don't like the show, I find that they straight up dislike or hate her, find her cringey, and do not find her relatable.

I think The legend of Korra is in some ways better and deeper than Avatar the last Airbender. It's just that so many people hate on Korra and that shapes our opinions...

lok really isn’t that deep and complex as it’s stans make it out to be. Things like the handling of the villains are done in a pretty simple and easy to understand way. They want to enact some sort of change to fix certain flaws in society, but obviously they do it in the worse ways possible, hence why they need to be stopped. Once that’s done we can assume that the heroes do what the villains wanted in the first place, but in a less violent and brutal way. That’s kind of a running theme in this show, that extremism is bad. Something we could have already guessed.

@@austinjohnsen4430 I know villains are done quite well in the show but that's not what I was talking about. I was referring to Korra's suffering and growth and how real that felt when I watched it for the first time. In the original show, yeah characters were sad and desperate and broken, but in a couple of episodes, they were back smiling again and fine, but Korra's story was more mature and tragic. I love that kind of stuff. About LoK not being so deep: that's just wrong. There are many mature themes hidden in the show for example abandonment issues, PTSD, manipulation, morals, equality in a relationship, trauma, family relationships, isolation, and more... these themes aren't so clearly visible at first but are definitely present and can be seen if you pay attention. It's better than in the original series where every lesson was stated clearly and characters forgot them the next day. The villains in LoK have a much more important role than what you made it sound like. They're Korra's source of morality. At the end of the show, she had to learn what they were doing wrong because, in many ways, she had been doing the same. It's beautiful and sad that Korra had to learn from her enemies, rather than her mentors and wise friends like in the original series. That's also something I like because it's more mature and open-minded, and also more realistic. LoK is deeper than AtLA. Change my mind.

@@galkastelic8906 A lot of what you said about avatar can easily be applied to lok. Korra’s big low points in the first two seasons are reserved for the finales which she gets over real quick with a pep talk by Aang and Tenzin, and a new magic trick. It’s not so different from how problems that are introduced in an episode of ATLA usually gets resolved in that same episode, just on a much smaller scale than in the first half of Korra. And lok absolutely spells out the lessons that need to be learned. You got Aang’s line about hitting our lowest point leads to the greatest change. You got Toph telling Korra that her enemies weren’t as bad as she initially thought. And you got Korra saying she learned to be more compassionate through her suffering. Korra absolutely learned plenty of stuff from her mentors. Toph was the one that gave her the idea of trying to understand her enemies, and Tenzin helped her energybend at the end of season two. Where’s the credit for avatar’s themes of abandonment, grief, loss, forgiveness, and redemption?

@@galkastelic8906 It’s been 3 hours. have you given much thought to everything I’ve said? My overall point was that outside of some surface level differences like the grittier elements and the violence, these two shows are really not that different from one another in plenty of ways. Like how they both decide to insert some cringe humor into scenes that are suppose to be intense and serious. Zuko attacking the southern water tribe is accompanied by goofy cartoon sound effects, and Meelo comes in yelling taste my fury and starts farting when Lin is getting the crap kicked out of her by the equalists. But I think the worse offender is Bolin making his sock pun after Zaheer has been defeated. Who the fuck would do something like that after one of their best friends almost died and could still die for all he knows? No wonder there are people that think Bolin has a mental disability.

@@austinjohnsen4430 I guess I'm trying to say that ATLA is more open with their deeper themes and explores them in an episode and then never touches on them again. For example, Aang's loss of nation or Katara's hatred and need for revenge, whereas in LOK, some theme's really aren't even visibly to be explored but are in a very beautiful and powerful way. One example of that is appreciation. When Korra's gifted the avatar state she doesn't appreciate it from the start and abuses it, but during the course of season 2, she learns to appreciate it. Deeper lessons are easier to convey through LOK because every book tells a different one and the whole show tells us some kind of message at the end, but ATLA is just a character driven show with a somewhat predictable plot and interesting characters, which are just a part of the story, which tells us some little, minor lessons from episode to episode, whereas in LOK Korra's journey IS the story and IS the lesson.
