The obvious credit Southgate gets is that he's prepared this team to win penalties. Very hard to progress in a major competition without winning penalties.
Ste is actually unreasonable on Southgate. If United scammed our way through a UCL campaign only playing like RB Salsburg/Rangers level teams he would be raving about Ten Hags ability to grind out results when it matters most. "Can only beat the team that's put in front of you" is like one of his main lines, but when it's Southgate it's "Oh who have they beat?"

Southgate is very slow to learn and adapt. He's lucky to have got to a semi final. But can't say he didn't show he's learnt some things yesterday, even if it was almost too little too late if not for Bellingham's and saka's worldies.. His subs stunned me bc they were actually good. @dawudqadri7295

I've been saying this for a while. Southgate is very slowly evolving and going in the right direction, but the progression is far too slow. I think this version of Southgate would have beaten Italy in the last Euros, and loses to France by a narrower margin in the last world cup. If God forbid he stays another 10 years, then in 2034 we could win a world cup.
Jay on point about Bobby Robson. Many of the performances were dreadful, and 2 out of 4 utter fails in tournaments. And it would have been interesting to see if Terry Venables could achieve the same success if his team's games weren't ALL AT WEMBLEY.
@InUndertow
26 күн бұрын
It's pure nostalgia. Southgate's done a better job than both (despite being a worse manager).
@Stan.k.Phlaps6447

I remember Venables was getting criticised endlessly for sticking with his "Christmas tree" formation in the warm up games and the first euro 96 group game, which we drew. Then he changed it because of the pressure for the Scotland game which we only narrowly won. The Holland game was the only game in the tournament that we really spanked anybody. We drew against Spain and lost to Germany. But people just remember it how they want to. They seem to forget that was our last semi until Southgate came along. Although he's no managerial phenomenon, he learned from Euro 96 that team spirit carries you a long way and that's what he works the most on.

27:45 is where Mainoo lovefest begins and I am all here for it.
I love when Ste sits on the fence
I think there is a legitimate chance that if england had no manager at all they would have gotten the same results and possibly better by letting the players sort out things and play in their actual positions.
12:00 and we get to the relevant Southgate assesment. England would have been back home ages ago if it hadn't been for moments from big players. England's best opposition in this tournament so far had already been beaten by Austria. Southgate does deserve credit for the spirit in the camp, they seem happy.

Ste giving his best Andy Tate, "he got the job off a technicality"
The comparison to Seedorf is absolutely correct.
Southgate's not an amazing manager by any means, but the quality of managers at international level is poor. The best managers don't want to manage at international level and the quality of football is never gonna be the same as club level. If managing England was as easy as everyone thinks it is, it wouldn't have taken us 55 years to reach another final. Whatever you think of Southgate's managerial ability, you can't argue that he hasn't done a good job as England manager. Anyone who says otherwise is talking out of their arse (Ste).

People have played too much footy manager and watched a few videos and think they are tactical geniuses. There is more to being a successful manager than f*cking "tactics". Nobody mentioning the culture and TEAM building Southgate has done to create the togetherness clearly on display. The group BELIEVE, the bond is clear to see, and it's to the managers credit. The facts are he is the most succsessful English manager with the possible exception of Alf Ramsay. Nobody else has come close, and tbh I think a lot of it is down to politics and a perception amongst certain boorish yobs that due to the squad "taking the knee" (that was booed) Southgate is some "Woke" p*ssy that deserves some yobbish bile. (Spain 1 vs England 7/8) Despite separately ripping pundits elevating relatively average English players. Explicitly mentioned Pickford, albeit elsewhere. You can’t have it both ways. I in general do agree with ste. But I also can't help be a contrarian so here goes: Gareth Southgate is a master strategist and on occasion a decent tactician. His strategy has been to confuse and neg not only all of us and the world press- but also our opposition. They don't know what our playstyle is- how we might shape on the day. I genuinely feel Southgate welcomes the we are shit narrative - because he is underperforming in order to surprise. And really- he does know what might work. He does know the quality (and in particular the fitness advantage) of our players. He keeps this under a bushel to lull teams into a false sense of security, in matches wear then down until the 80th minute. And he is keeping a decent lineup and formation which suits the players until the final match of the tournament. It's poker with a decent hand. He has negged us all- and therefore getting the final is a shock and will then get him a better press and possibly a few more £8 millions

Stats can tell any story Ste, Foden might have had fewer games centrally for City than on either wing, but look at his productivity down the centre for City vs either wing. England's problem is trying to shoehorn both Foden and Bellingham. One or the other and plan accordingly for me.
Southgate has achieved success due to inheriting a coherent pattern of play amongst the young team he started with. Up until this tournament Southgate’s England have played like an under-21 side - free flowing football that has served us very well. We didn’t win tournaments mainly because Southgate lacks tactical nouse and is too negative.
“Is Nico Williams better than Gordon?” Is an outrageous statement. Ste goes off the deep end pretty often and I can still see his side but that was crazy.
He isnt a tactical genius. However, Southgate has done something that no england manager since proabably Terry Venables has done since 96 and that is make everyone in that camp very very happy and want to play from him. You can never underestimate how impressive that man managment is.
Not necessarily a dig at the others but you’ve gotta admire Joes patience. To be cut off constantly mid sentence and shouted at, and still manage to be the calmest man in the room has to be respected.

Excellent debate lads. Loved this.
Dutch revolution happening at Manchester United , reminds me of Madrid 06 to 08 , they had Ruud, Robben, Sneijder, Vaart, Drentje and huntelar
International football is more about leadership rather than coaching. An International manager obviously has to set up a team tactically but its more about managing a group of players at a constant harmonious level and get them pulling in the same direction through ups and downs for long periods of time during tournaments. That is not easy and does take a high level of skill.
Ste's frustration here is entirely understandable to me - I wouldn't yell in his shoes, but I get why he is. Making even-handed statements might make you sound more reasonable, but it doesn't mean you've got a valid argument. There is a total logical disconnect to "You have to attribute some of the success to Southgate" - No you DON'T... And "Of course (you'd give him credit), because he's the manager." - No, you only give a manager credit for demonstrable examples of good management. How can you make it to adulthood and not spot countless cases in life where things succeed despite a shithouse manager being involved? ANY workplace where the workers are good can still get some results despite shitty management.

the previous england team had to face some monsters - the brazil of ronaldo and ronaldihno for e.g, this lot had had easy routes to finals and semi finals . in this tournament apart from Germany and Spain, no teams have really shown they are at that level.
I see that he's not technical as a manager. But you have to give him his flowers for the semis as Jay said subbing Saka and Kane takes balls,
The one move from Mainoo when he let ball do all the work when it took two men out on the centre of midfield made me think this lad is the bomb
I think good managers improve the team, bad managers just need to get out the way.
I get it, I am no fan of Southgate. But I have heard Howson say several times on videos that winning every game 1-0 under Mourinho playing shit football would have been great. Southgate hasn’t gotten over the line yet, but he deserves credit for the results if not his tactical ability. He’s got a top group of players getting the results they should.
Ste, by your own admission, you’re a contrarian. You’re bordering on Talksport-slate-ManUtd level noise. Give the man his flowers, the fact that the rest of the international contingent is shocking, is no more Southgate’s fault that it is Ericsson’s fault he lost to one of the best International Brazilian teams ever. You can’t give him all the critique for getting it wrong, then give him zero credit for getting it right.
It’s really simple for me and my friends all have a consensus on this - Southgate has made more decisions that make me scratch my head or want to bang it compared to decisions I applauded this is a fact. Southgate is a B manager with an A+ squad, so as long as he can keep the ship afloat, it will win the race, but it doesn’t take a genius to drive a straight line but he’s got a Ferrari in this race. For his own standards, Southgate is overachieving atm. Problem is, all the managers before him couldn’t even keep the ship afloat So Southgate looks like a genius right now.
Second half of this is actually decent, much better once you move away from Southgate
You never mentioned the fact it’s written in the stars for kobbie mainoo to score one of the best goals international football has ever seen to win the game on Sunday
Kobbie Mainoo, the Youngest Elder
Stretford Paddock motto - We’re better fans than all of you.
Imagine doing a video about Zirkzee and end up talking about Southgate the whole video.
Joel, I'm from Scotland, and we hate England doing well. However, your argument is true and real. Southgate, however much disliked, is a success for England
He said he wasn't to add more goals to his game... faith in the youth has me wanting the season to start now!!
That focus on jay for "21 before hes 21" 😂
Jesus, fair play to Joe for putting up with Adam and Ste when all they do is shout and repeat themselves to make sure their shite jokes have been heard
There is a huge argument with the level of current international teams. England’s ‘golden generation’ had these expectations, despite pretty much all the other major footballing nations having world class squads that were as good or better in that era. Currently, England have arguably the best talent pool in world football, along with France and Portugal. A lot of the other major footballing nations are at low points. Give a better manager this England team and they’d have won at least one tournament surely.
Thought this was a Zirkzee video??? What are you on about??????

Off The Bar Sherlock
The truth is that if Southgate was any good as a manager, England would be looking for their 3rd trophy in a row. Cost England against Italy, cost England against France and stumbled to a final this time despite awful tactics.
FIGHT! FIGHT! FIGHT! 😂
Best thing about the Zirkzee 'Here We Go' is it saved us from 20 more mins going round in circles on Southgate
England's better results have been led by an improvement in the squad morale led 100% by the players. The players have decide to bury the hatchet in regards to club rivalries and work together. Southgate adds nothing to the England team and if England had a real manager they would have won that final against Italy.
Ste just doesn't like Southgate. Gareth can win the Euros, the World Cup, even the Grand National Ste still won't rate him. He's giving him zero credit.
Completely 1000% disagree with Joe here. This team got to the final despite Southgate holding them back. Does he really think another gaffer couldn't do exactly this or better with THIS supremely talented lot? Also, imagine how far this team could go under an actual manager like Rangnick.

Bro, how long have you been watching England??😂😂 There is no guarantee that another manager can do a better job
Ste is bang on about Southgate
Love a ste vs joe argument and jay trying to play peacekeeper. But let’s see how tactical clues up Southgate’s because shaw needs to start Sunday as the left hand side is crying out for an overlapping left footed fullback not tripper
Getting bored of Stes nonsense regarding Southgate ? 😴 we get it, you don’t like England 🥱
Joe seems to have conveniently forgotten the context to G. Southgate runs to the competitions.
I love the energy boys! ☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️👹
