I've been saying this for a while. Southgate is very slowly evolving and going in the right direction, but the progression is far too slow. I think this version of Southgate would have beaten Italy in the last Euros, and loses to France by a narrower margin in the last world cup. If God forbid he stays another 10 years, then in 2034 we could win a world cup.

I remember Venables was getting criticised endlessly for sticking with his "Christmas tree" formation in the warm up games and the first euro 96 group game, which we drew. Then he changed it because of the pressure for the Scotland game which we only narrowly won. The Holland game was the only game in the tournament that we really spanked anybody. We drew against Spain and lost to Germany. But people just remember it how they want to. They seem to forget that was our last semi until Southgate came along. Although he's no managerial phenomenon, he learned from Euro 96 that team spirit carries you a long way and that's what he works the most on.

Southgate's not an amazing manager by any means, but the quality of managers at international level is poor. The best managers don't want to manage at international level and the quality of football is never gonna be the same as club level. If managing England was as easy as everyone thinks it is, it wouldn't have taken us 55 years to reach another final. Whatever you think of Southgate's managerial ability, you can't argue that he hasn't done a good job as England manager. Anyone who says otherwise is talking out of their arse (Ste).

People have played too much footy manager and watched a few videos and think they are tactical geniuses. There is more to being a successful manager than f*cking "tactics". Nobody mentioning the culture and TEAM building Southgate has done to create the togetherness clearly on display. The group BELIEVE, the bond is clear to see, and it's to the managers credit. The facts are he is the most succsessful English manager with the possible exception of Alf Ramsay. Nobody else has come close, and tbh I think a lot of it is down to politics and a perception amongst certain boorish yobs that due to the squad "taking the knee" (that was booed) Southgate is some "Woke" p*ssy that deserves some yobbish bile. What he is, is a class act - as well as being bloody successful! It may be Howsons channel but he's the only reason I turn off.

Ste’s logical fallacy: Including Pickford, Stones, etc as “world class” to make the squad debate strength stronger vs Spain. (Spain 1 vs England 7/8) Despite separately ripping pundits elevating relatively average English players. Explicitly mentioned Pickford, albeit elsewhere. You can’t have it both ways. Either England and Spain squads are closer than we’re claiming. Or it’s full of world class players and the media aren’t exaggerating average players. The media are wrong. There’s arguably 4 world class players for England. As things stand.

I in general do agree with ste. But I also can't help be a contrarian so here goes: Gareth Southgate is a master strategist and on occasion a decent tactician. His strategy has been to confuse and neg not only all of us and the world press- but also our opposition. They don't know what our playstyle is- how we might shape on the day. I genuinely feel Southgate welcomes the we are shit narrative - because he is underperforming in order to surprise. And really- he does know what might work. He does know the quality (and in particular the fitness advantage) of our players. He keeps this under a bushel to lull teams into a false sense of security, in matches wear then down until the 80th minute. And he is keeping a decent lineup and formation which suits the players until the final match of the tournament. It's poker with a decent hand. He has negged us all- and therefore getting the final is a shock and will then get him a better press and possibly a few more £8 millions

International football is more about leadership rather than coaching. An International manager obviously has to set up a team tactically but its more about managing a group of players at a constant harmonious level and get them pulling in the same direction through ups and downs for long periods of time during tournaments. That is not easy and does take a high level of skill.

Ste's frustration here is entirely understandable to me - I wouldn't yell in his shoes, but I get why he is. Making even-handed statements might make you sound more reasonable, but it doesn't mean you've got a valid argument. There is a total logical disconnect to "You have to attribute some of the success to Southgate" - No you DON'T... And "Of course (you'd give him credit), because he's the manager." - No, you only give a manager credit for demonstrable examples of good management. How can you make it to adulthood and not spot countless cases in life where things succeed despite a shithouse manager being involved? ANY workplace where the workers are good can still get some results despite shitty management.

It’s really simple for me and my friends all have a consensus on this - Southgate has made more decisions that make me scratch my head or want to bang it compared to decisions I applauded this is a fact. Southgate is a B manager with an A+ squad, so as long as he can keep the ship afloat, it will win the race, but it doesn’t take a genius to drive a straight line but he’s got a Ferrari in this race. For his own standards, Southgate is overachieving atm. Problem is, all the managers before him couldn’t even keep the ship afloat So Southgate looks like a genius right now.

England’s ‘golden generation’ had these expectations, despite pretty much all the other major footballing nations having world class squads that were as good or better in that era. Currently, England have arguably the best talent pool in world football, along with France and Portugal. A lot of the other major footballing nations are at low points.
