Every artist needs to start somewhere. I never got the whole "araki stole from fotns" angle. It was one of his first works, & he evolved into his own style eventually. If anything, it came full circle as some Jojo fans are going to check out FOTNS remake in 2023 so it's all good in the end.

I was mainly bothered by the overshadowing of FOTNS by the latest JoJo fandom. As I started writing, the more parallels I found between the two. I'm aware that Araki had always provided his own input be it the Stone Mask, vampires, zombies, Pillar Men, Stands, ghosts, etc. Even the masculine side of things still had his own touches such as the number 7 lines on the cheeks. Or his weird veins that he draws on their arms & shoulders. I only found out recently that those lines were supposed to be veins through a Rohan OVA. Even so, I had to share this because I didn't like how people dismissed FOTNS or often refuse to accept it as something that predates JoJo. Even though a new anime is coming there will be people saying "This anime looks like JoJo!" type of remarks. I just hope those comments will eventually go away as the new FOTNS becomes available.

Jonathan Joestar may have been inspired by Kenshiro, but Part 3 seems to be the part that took the most inspiration from North Star. From the very start of the series with Jotaro using Star Platinum to break the prison bars (in an almost identical way to Kenshiro breaking the prison bars when he was locked up in Rin/Lin's village), to Polnareffe being an almost identical character to Rei, Ora Ora Ora (and all variations) being Kenshiro's ata ata ata.

It is amazing how influental FOTNS is, not just JoJo but also Berserk, City Hunter, Baki, Toriko, Street Fighter, Tekken and possibly even Metal Gear as well (because of how similar the idea of Outer Heaven to Golan and how the founder that is Colonel and Big Boss inspired to create military paradise after they realise that soldiers are tool for government to use for their personal gain) Street Fighter is literally a big reference to FOTNS as there is tons of it in the lore such as Ryu is reference to Kenshiro while Ken is Shin (their name combined is also a reference to Ryuken) Tekken is how I imagine FOTNS story will goes if there is no nuclear holocaust happening (replace devil gene with Hokuto Ryuken), Jin Kazama have an uncanny resemblance to Kenshiro especially in Tekken 8 and devil gene remind me a lot to Hokuto Ryuken in some way (I also imagine Raoh being founder of a very powerful and influental company that his company secretly control the world had the civillization didn't died out like Heihachi Mishima) Late Kentaro Miura used to seek advice from Buronson when writing Berserk

Thank you for the insight. I'm not too familiar with Metal Gear so I never thought that the Colonel & Golan would play a part. Although, I've seen plenty of Capcom & other fighter or arcade themed games take a lot of inspiration from anime. Final Fight Rolento is modeled after The Colonel & I recall seeing Ryu concept art that was closer to Kenshiro. I think Karate Baki Ichidai played a bigger part with Ryu. Then again Hokuto Ryuken could've inspired the Dark Hadou. I'm also not too well versed with Tekken but I can definitely see how that could be HNK in a modern setting.

At 20:42, Araki basically drew Violence Jack, almost 1-to-1, as a foe for Baoh; Violence Jack being a very direct inspiration for Fist of the North Star as well, since it predated most of the things shown there, even from the Mad Max films and had similar "auras" that acted as a method of intimidation, something Nagai loved doing in a few of his manga. Araki's style before Baoh even looks extremely similar to Go Nagai's style even, a style Nagai learned from his teacher, Osamu Tezuka. Heck, if you wanna go further, a lot of the hyper violence and disgusting gore found in both FotnS and JoJo come straight from Violence Jack, like ACDC's brain and its weird capabilities, fighting animals, weird, disfiguring attacks etc. And there's two other people influenced by Violence Jack and one of the two was also more influenced by FotNS : Kentaro Miura of Berserk and Hagiwara of Bastard, though Hagiwara was ostly Devilman, VJ and Dungeons and Dragons. Kind of a wild trip. Especially when you consider that outside of the "Hara Jawline", all the features from the sideburns, small eyes that get very shifty or light up and the massive eyebrows are characteristics of Nagai's art, traits that even his women have, like Cutie Honey; traits that other artists evoked as well, such as Ken Ishikawa, with Ryoma, Hayato and Benkei, Ryoma looking like a proto-Kenshiro in some cases and acting like a proto-Jotaro in others. And yeah, Hayama's art for the OVAs definitely pushed the three to series to exaggerate those features more and more to be almost "unified" as a "second generation" of Nagais, kinda like how Nagai started as a second generation Tezuka amongst his peers. On the copycats theme : Cyberblue is less of a copycat, given that Tetsuo Hara is the guy doing the art; he got some guy named "Bob", to do the story.

I remember thinking that Baoh enemy looked like Violence Jack. I do feel Jack himself did a play role in the construction of the manly archetype due to his prowess of being able to fight multiple people single-handedly. I decided to mention Cyber Blue as a copycat since that manga has two writers; BOB & Mitsui Ryuichi. From what I remember, Cyber Blue is the only manga they ever worked on and their ideas weren't exactly original. Despite being a sci-fi story, the tone was so much like FOTNS. That is assuming, Hara didn't provide any behind the scenes input for the story. Nowadays, Hara seems to be the license holder for Cyber Blue via the Coamix company. I suppose the masculine traits can be found in Go Nagai but there's also stuff from Monkey Punch, Takao Saito, or Kojima Koseiki that could've contributed. I don't recall who influenced Hara himself aside from watching Bruce Lee films.

@@THEAnimeHERO Not only that, Cyber Blue is a riff on Captain Marvel / Shazam, with the boy becoming an adult via "magic means" to fight evil as well, Cyber Blue is basically "Shazam but after sniffing that good Space Cobra and Fotns stuff". Takao Saito I'd say contribute more to the "masculine" image that the 80s artists seem to adopt since he was one of those who dwelved very much into the hardboiled detective genre, while Monkey Punch contributed to the comedic action, forging a parallel with Go Nagai before they branched out; Monkey Punch's influece are very ironically found in FLCL in modern times, the same OVA that had an entire episode dedicated to making fun of some Lupin's tropes and mentioning Monkey Punch by name in a 4th wall break. When it comes to Nagai, possibly due to his controversial status, a few seem to avoid it but others embrace the influence very much, like the late Miura and Hagiwara, given their styles and thought process. Another interesting influence in the shaping of artstyles is Monkey Punch being one of the initial influences of Takaya Yoshiki of Guyver fame given how his early style is similar to Kitazume's, which seems like a continuation of Monkey Punch's before both men among many other 80s allumni animators splintered off to make the visual style most associated with the 80s mecha genre and dark hero shows. A complete 180 from Lupin's lecherous, humourous and times hard-boiled adventures. But to put it simply, just like with Jojo, Mad Max wasn't enough to give inspiration for some of the goons' designs and some of their gimmicks and their hyper violence, especially the way brains explode out of the thugs' head in FotNS.

@@THEAnimeHERO Sometimes it can be very weird because it comes from the places one never expects, like George Morikawa; the man was very influenced by Ashita no Joe's and Tiger Mask's artstyle yet the deciding factor and evolution of his art came thanks to his first assistant, then an unpaid university student one year his junior, that got the gig for one day; Kentaro Miura. Funny how things work out. A similar case happened with Takeshi Obata if I recall correctly, his initial style being fairly different but while working on LAMP! one of his assistants influenced him to expand his artsyle and look up some Marvel comics at this and mecha anime; that was Nobuhiro Watsuki who was inspired by Todd McFarlane's Spider-man and Spawn along with Yasuhiro Nighthow's Trigun during the serialization of Kenshin. I suggest you read the Kamen Rider ZO manga by Kazuhiko Shimamoto, one of his favourite works after a hospitalized Ishinomori asked him to do the serialization of the synonymous movie to which he agreed upon since Ishinomori was his idol and biggest influence in his artstyle, an artstyle that came to influence many down the line. In that manga, there's a short story called "Osamu Tenka" where the eponymous Osamu Tenka has to go and work as an assistant to Ishinomori Shotaro's studio and he tries to understand how Ishinomori came to have such a style and why he can't copy his success. The story is based on true events and Shimamoto's first time as an assistant back in the day, seeing the mangaka(not Ishinomori, he wasn't so lucky), Shintani Kaoru of Desert Rose fame, practice drawing some of the most fantastic art from realism, dada and other styles, doing nature sketches and even copying renaissance paintings...only for the mangaka to then go and copy the drawings of Osamu Tezuka and Goseki Kojima(Lone Wolf and Cub) and then proceeding to copy the poses of some women's magazines before he finally drew in his own style. Shimamoto, just like Tenka in the short story, proceeded to do the same with even more fervor, abandoning his early art university notions of simply becoming a better Ishinomori, expanding his horizons. A whole lot of assistants begin like that or at least they used to, same with the animators and that's how the cultural shift to manga and anime came about during those years. Had such a course never taken place, manga would probably still be copying Tintin and Looney Tunes at best.

21:39 The reason Cyber Blue (shown at bottom center) looks like Kenshiro is that it was drawn by Tetsuo Hara. (Hara's name is written in Japanese as 原哲夫, which you can see in the bottom right corner.) The top center one, 北斗王拳 looks like a straight Chinese bootleg of Hokuto no Ken. 17:33 Some clarification: The "to" (斗) actually means "dipper" rather than "star". "Hokuto" (北斗) is the "North Dipper" (what we call "The Big Dipper") and "Nanto" means "South Dipper", both real asterisms. (Constellations and asterisms are basically the same thing, but constellations are officially recognized by some group whereas asterisms are not. The Big Dipper asterism is part of the constellation Ursa Major.) When Hokuto no Ken was initially localized they probably thought "Fist of the Big Dipper" sounded dumb so they went with "Fist of the North Star" instead, and now we're stuck with it, as the name is too popular to change at this point. But it causes a lot of confusion 4:59 The Hokuto no Ken Leia's hair looks like Princess Leia's hair after the Ewoks giver her a makeover in Return of the Jedi. There's also a character named Han around this time in the FotNS manga. That Geila guy was redesigned to look less like Jabba the Hutt in Hokuto no Ken 2. George Lucas based Jabba on the "fat sultan" archetype, and was influenced by samurai movies like The Hidden Fortress as well as European sci-fi comics. The whole post apocalypse with bandits came from the Mad Max movies, with even a few of those punks based on specific Mad Max characters. There are several other character designs that Hara lifted from movies. A villainous version of Sloth from the Goonies appears in one story accompanied by a pet panther. Mr. T and Hulk Hogan appear at the beginning of the part of the manga that Hokuto no Ken 2 was based on.

I know that Hara drew Cyber Blue. I decided to put it there due to the two writers of the manga mimicking the tone of FOTNS wit a sci-fi setting. Yes, the center manga is a bootleg called Hokuto Ou Ken. I'm aware of some of the cameos but I don't remember Sloth being in it. I'll have to look for the chapter. I'm familiar with the connections to Mad Max 2 The Road Warrior. Characters have appeared sporadically in the Shin arc and I recall the Humongous mask during Raoh attacking Mamiya's village.

I got into Fist around 2011. I remember making a few videos when people told me about the JoJo OVAs. They recommended I watch them since Jotaro was like Kenshiro. I ended up watching those 13 eps and I liked it. I started reading the manga from Phantom Blood. When I was around Battle Tendency the 2012 anime got announced so the timing was perfect. Stardust Crusaders 2014 is my favorite one to watch due to it's detail but I also really liked the OVAs. I was upset and still am that we can't see the Phantom Blood movie. Nowadays I also lost interest in JoJo since Part 8 mainly consisted of weird things. I'm also not a fan of Araki's current style. While I understand that he wanted to pursue his own art I was okay with his format from 4-7. But I do prefer seeing his earlier work which was heavily influenced by Tetsuo Hara. Even the beginning of Part 4 had a very refined look which didn't last long as the characters quickly changed their designs.

That's because of both the art style & tone change. Once JoJo goes into Part 4 the idea of strong physiques isn't on the forefront anymore. P4 manga started with a very masculine artstyle which faded away into smaller and thinner designs. This carried over into P5 & the tone wasn't about masculinity. Ironically P6 lead, Jolyne, had more testosterone than the P5 cast. Although the Eng dub of P5 was filled with a lot of manly & deep voice performances. Once JoJo enters P7 till present with P9 there are no muscles. There are no stoic faced chiseled visages. It's become something else entirely as accompanied by Araki's eccentric writing habits like licking eyeballs for losing a bet.

It's almost as if they _actively_ avoid saying *#Togashi**'s* name, most likely due to _"manly"_ *#pride** and male **#ego* since they are "almost" contemporaries.
