Johnny Cash is considered not just one of the greatest country singer-songwriters of all time, but one of the best singer-songwriters of all time…period. He’s also one of the best-selling musicians of all time, selling more than 90 million records worldwide. He performed at least 1500 songs in his career…hundreds of those songs he wrote himself. According to my calculations, he released at least 97 albums. Now you can see why I didn’t list them all.
Much of his music was about hardship, about the trials and tribulations that everyday folks go through. Despite the dark and sad themes of many of his songs, people often forget that he also knew how to be silly. Some of his biggest songs are quite lighthearted and make you smile. Thanks to his backing bands over the decades, Johnny developed an incredibly unique sound that combined multiple genres, including but not limited to country, gospel, folk, blues, rockabilly, and even rock and roll. Despite being a crossover artist, he particularly helped bring country music into the mainstream. He was, after all, a big reason why I first got into country.
There’s a reason why we often first recall those free prison concerts when we think of Johnny Cash today. That’s because his biggest appeal came from the fact that he never stopped being a champion for the downtrodden, for the forgotten in society. He was one of us.

My Patreon supporters got early access to this video. For real. www.patreon.com/thebeatgoeson Also, I want to apologize for this video. Johnny Cash released sooo many albums. I shouldn't have mentioned so many of them. That probably exhausted many of you. Anyway, thanks for watching.

This video was a breath of fresh air for me after an exhausting exams period. Johnny Cash was a really wonder ful man, and you don't see a lot of people quite like him in the industry. I hope you do a video about Beethoven at some point, for even more diversity.

Well done indeed, Mr. Beat. As a huge CASH fan and a fairly knowledgeable one at that, I can say that I learned a thing or two from your presentation and it was thoroughly enjoyable. I'm very impressed that you mentioned Bruce Springsteen as a contributor to the Johnny 99 album (writer of Johnny 99 and Highway Patrolman). A little known fact, I suspect. Johnny Cash is a fantastic artist… his performance of songs like “Give my love to rose” are stirring. I’m glad I found your second channel, Mr. Beat!
Great job! I’d love videos on the history of Eric Clapton, someone who’s had a really long career, or Jimi hendrix, someone who did so much in only 4 years of a career.
I've been watching your other channel for a few years now. Didn't know about this one. Johnny Cash is my very country artist and Elvis was my grandfather's favorite artist. Thank you for the great video

Tell me about it. I have decided that, moving forward with this series, I'm just going to have either leave some albums out or describe them even more briefly. Then again, I will likely never make a video again about an artist who has released so many albums.
Another great video, love to see one of The Doors
Man everybody should give Cash a listen at some point in their lives.
So hard to pick a favorite. What Do I Care, Wanted Man, Tennessee Flat Top, and of course his main hits. I think a follow up to Merle Haggard would be cool, as Johnny Cash inspired him to get into music at one of his concerts!
Thank you so much for this video. I love Johnny. RIP
Awesome video like always. I like these videos because when I watch a documentary about a musician that I dont know I understand them and the music a bit better than having no background at all. James Brown would be cool for a vid.

Dear Mr Beat: It is always a delight to see when you upload video essays of all the great recording artists that have graced the radio waves over the past ~70 years. That being said, have you ever considered putting out any content about the people who worked behind the scenes, such as producers like Rick Rubin or Alan Parsons? Regardless, thanks again for the amazing content! I watch every video you put out on both of your channels.
I grew up with Johnny cash. He will always be my favorite country singer. Also I have a question. Is their a chance of "a brief history of Motörhead"?
Wow. You really did the research. You could always here this guy’s life story in his voice. Never knew he wrote many of his classic hits. He was already way ahead of the Beatles, and Bob Dylan, in that regard. The original singer songwriter. The real deal.

Well we’ll we’ll if it isn’t the man himself back again for another Legendary documentary this time. It’s about Johnny Cash❤
Walk the Line and Cocaine Blues are at the top for me. They’re the first that come to mind after asking what our favorites are.
This was great. This was the first video I watched from this channel, and now I'm hooked to it. Could you do either Michael Jackson or Prince for your next brief history video?
To be honest, I'm not a big country music fan, but I really like Johnny Cash and as a child of the 90s I remember hearing the American Recordings quite regularly on 89X the alternative rock station in Detroit. Another thing that I remember hearing quite a bit was Social Distortion's cover of Ring of Fire, which I can't help but wonder if that help convince him to work with Rick Rubin in the first place.
“Black socks, they never get dirty. The longe you wear them the blacker they get. Someday I think I might wash them but something inside me keeps saying not yet, not yet, not yet.” So interesting to hear the real origins of his choice in costume given that my favourite song by him is “Man in Black”. I really liked the aura he mad around it, a good example of A+ early marketing in country music
I would love a brief history on Kiss.
I'd really love to see a video on The Mamas & the Papas! Either them or Jefferson Airplane/Starship, or just Grace Slick on her own 😍
The term "legend" gets tossed around too loosely in entertainment. But Johnny Cash actually fits the bill. The ultimate bounceback kid with an unbelievable amount of albums (even not counting those compilations).

Ah man, I wish you mentioned his last studio album Out Among the Stars. The album he did in the 80s that the record label shelved...for some reason and was better than any of his 80s stuff. She Used to Love Me A lot is one of the best songs he did and his vocals bettered the version by Dave Allan Coe. Also I feel missing out that moment where he went into a cave to die was a big boo boo seeing how much it turned his life around. Still, great vid! The man did so much its essy to miss a huge chunk and I Walk the Line could easily get a sequel based on the rest of his life.
@mattbeatgoeson
Жыл бұрын
Yeah, I really did cut some stuff out there. He just had so many albums already, but you're right- that one had some great tunes on it. Regarding the cave story, I didn't include it because the story was likely either heavily embellished by Johnny and his friends and family or perhaps even made up entirely. I used to think the story was true until I read some biographies about him. Check out the sources in the description by the way! Thanks for the thoughtful comment. It's obvious you're a true fan. :)
Could you make the same kind of video about Carl Perkins ? He was a great rock n' roll musician himself and a great friend of Johnny.
He also had a brother who got into music -- Tommy Cash.

Have always been a Johnny Cash fan (only country artist that I can listen to for more than one song). The albums he did with Rubin to me are the best he did. Covers are hard for me to usually like but OMG, he did some AMAZING ones (Rusty Cage, Hurt, Solitary Man among the best).
You implied June didn't write Ring of Fire, when it's a well known fact that she collaborated with Merle Kilgore, and her sister Anita was the first person to record it in 1962 , June wrote a number of songs and it is often been said that she helped him at his lowest ebb 😎
