Woohoo! Shoutout from an Akita resident! Long live the Namahage!
I always find interesting that cultures all over the world have kind of the same festival's and ceremonies. I'm Hopi Native American and we have a ceremony were soyokos come to each of our houses in the village and demand food from everyone, young and old to pay for life for another year. they also know of the children have been bad and threaten to eat them if they don't correct their bad behavior.
woah guys - the quality of this video was amazing! Beautiful shots of Akita and the snow - the camera seemed so crisp! Plus the drone shots were beautiful. The voiceovers were so funny and enjoyable and i learned a lot from this video but it was still super fun to watch! It made me want to go abroad to Japan and visit myself :) Thank you Rachel and Jun, you guys really made an effort with this video and it paid off so much, well done! ps Jun, i think your snow angel was beautiful... but you might wanna work on your technique if you wanna impress your wife :P

I've been watching your videos for over a year and it's been so amazing watching you grow as a KZread channel! Keep up the awesome work :)
This is really a beautiful video because of its winter scenery, so while your title might be apt for the scene with those cool costumes (you were genuinely scary, Rachel! hahaha), there's so much more here. There's one shot of about five seconds where the snow is falling on a forest: I really loved that and could watch it for hours. I gather you have a drone now too, so the overhead shots of your making snow angels is exciting. You've gone way beyond the average KZreadr because you're now making not only topically interesting videos, but also visually interesting videos. Maybe your fortune comes from that tree you got to touch. That was cool. It reminded me of the heart trees in Game of Thrones. Thanks! :)
The Japanese Krampus! Krampus does the same thing: he trails behind Santa and kidnaps/punishes children who have been naughty.
Haha, that's a job I could do - being a Namehage. But i scare small kids with my face normally, so I probably wouldn't need to dress up for it :D (I work as a teacher's aide btw) Also, those drone shots of the snow are soooo pretty ♥
I must say that I really like this new style of video from you guys! Having the two of you provide the commentary in a conversational matter really makes it stand out!
OMG. All those shots of the snowy landscape. Gorgeous. Love this. You guys did an amazing job shooting this. Gotta love nature.
You used a drone for those last few shots didn't you? They were really cool!
We have very similiar traditions here in Switzerland :D even the costumes look very alike :D they go around at night and "steal" children and things :P
@Helvetica09
7 жыл бұрын
satireknight nope. Krampus is german and is a christmas thing :) ours is in the frane of Carnival/Fasnacht but with scary masks. It is not the same in all regions but the one that is most similar is the Wallis "Tschäggättä" i have never been but this is basically the most "traditional" attempt of Carnival in Switzerland :)
@aebi96
7 жыл бұрын
As an "aargauer" (swiss) guy I can agree the masks and the costumes look extremely close to the ones from our Guggemusig and Fasnachts guys :) (I dont really know anithyng about the storys behind them except for that I think its partially to scare kids and Fasnacht is to scare away the cold from the winter or something)
@Mara_1337

+Robert Amison They are Perchten also in Austria. Krampus is like the special one that visits the homes with Nikolaus, but Perchten roam the streets and make like lokal processions. I am really amazed at how similar they look, though. instead of bast clothes they have fur clothes but the overall look is similar.

Don't be! There are plenty of people who travel to Japan knowing no Japanese at all. Of course it's harder to get around and you rely a lot more on hand signals and asking people for help, but I believe you get more opportunities to interact with Japanese people that way anyway. :)

Oh, wow! That last shot going from Rachel and Jun's snow angels to the scenery was beautiful!
This brings back some good memories from my trip last year to several winter festivals in Aomori and Akita prefecture. The Oga Namahage Sedo Matsuri was probably my favorite, although the Yokote Bonden was also pretty weird...
Nice video! As I like seeing more of Japan cultural events and I have a lot of love for the kamis and yokais of Japanese folklore, I was really happy watching this video with all those onis!! Thank you! And of course, the drone view is just amazing! It was really beautiful in Jun's last video too. I'm looking forward to the next ones!
Wow! That festival... there's an almost identical one in Finland, although not preserved as well. It was called "kekripukki" or "nuuttipukki" I think, and sometimes it worked in reverse with children dressing up as ogres and going house-to-house to sing, receiving treats in return. So it's kinda like a multi-task christoween. Mas. Thing.
